Margaery was looking forward to spending time with her grandmother unpacking and drinking tea. She wanted to know what had made her leave Sweden, it was something Margaery had thought she would never do. Though having her here now made her more aware of how much she had missed the older woman. Her grandmother had always been her rock, the one she went to for advice and the one who had always supported her and Loras.
She made her way up the path to the address she had been given and rang the bell to wait for her grandmother to answer.
Olenna had just moved from the house her grandchildren shared with Loras’ friend and had asked Margaery to come over so that they could catch up properly as well as have her help unpack. Of course Olenna could have probably done most of it herself, but she thought that asking Margaery to help would be a good way to catch up. Sure, they’d spoken while Olenna was staying with her and Loras, but it would be a little different now, because this was her house and she wouldn’t have to watch what she said, not that she did most of the time anyway.
She had just put the kettle on the stove when she heard the bell and she walked through the condo to answer the door, smiling when she saw her granddaughter. “Hello, sweetheart.” She gave Margaery a hug then moved aside to allow her inside.
Margaery hugged her grandmother happily before entering the house, “Hello, this is lovely grandmother” she told her as she looked around, “And you are not very far from us at all” which pleased the younger woman immensely.
“One would think that I’d planned it that way,” Olenna smiled at her granddaughter then
gestured for her to follow her into the kitchen, “I put the tea kettle on just before you rang the bell, so it will be a few more minutes.” She’d already unpacked most of the tea cups and saucers and other glassware and it was already washed and put in the cabinets with the exception of two, which were on the counter by the stove, “While we’re waiting, why don’t you fill me in on what you’ve been up to since you moved out here.” While Olenna had been living with her grandchildren for just over a week, they hadn’t gotten much time to really, properly catch up since she’d been busy with the closing on the condo and Margaery had been busy with the end of her classes.
“Oh wonderful” Margaery said, “Thank you. Is there anything I can do to help?” she offered before smiling. “Well after invading Loras I decided to enrol in University on their law and languages courses and I’ve been made the Languages professors teaching assistant” She’d informed her grandmother this on the telephone but it was so much nicer in person and you could get the pride she held in herself clearer. “There is nobody in my lovelife at the moment so there is not much to tell in that regard” she added.
Olenna was extremely proud of her granddaughter for what she’d accomplished in such a short time since she’d moved out to live with her brother. Of course she was extremely proud of Loras as well, but for different reasons of course. He had been the first to make the move all the way to California and by himself at such a young age. Olenna had, of course, been worried about him, but she knew that her grandchildren had good heads on their shoulders and knew what they were doing, “That’s quite an accomplishment, sweetheart,” She retrieved the rest of the things they would need for tea, including a cheese platter and when the kettle whistled, she transferred the water into a tea pot then set everything on a tray, “Would you mind carrying this? We can sit on the patio.” The patio was one of the selling points of the condo and Olenna was going to use it to it’s full advantage.
The siblings did know what they were doing and it was nice to have their freedom, something which didn’t feel impinged even with their grandmother there. She had always been more supportive and understanding than their parents. Margaery smiled at her grandmothers compliment, it was an accomplishment and she was pleased her grandmother thought so too.
“Of course” she said stepping forward to pick up the tray, “Oh how lovely” Margary said once they were on the patio, “You were lucky to find such a nice place” she said with a smile as she placed the tray down and once her grandmother was settled began to prepare the tea.
Once they were seated, Olenna glanced out towards the yard then back to her granddaughter, “Once I saw this, I was sold. Of course, I didn’t let the realtor know that right away. I couldn’t make it too easy for the man, after all.” She smirked a bit and took a cup from Margaery once she’d prepared the tea. They’d had tea together enough times over the years that Margaery knew exactly how she took it, “Now, tell me why you don’t have any young men salivating over you? I had thought your brother would have gotten the chance to threaten some poor fool by now.”
“Of course. They have to sweat, make them work for their commission” Margaery agreed with a smile over the rim of her cup before taking a sip. “Oh you know me, I like to keep them all intrigued. Besides Loras is the one with a young man salivating all over him, it is I who have had the opportunity to threaten somebody, though Renly is far from a fool”
“Exactly,” Olenna took a sip of her own tea as she listened to Margaery, “Ah yes, I met your brother’s young man last week. It is rather obvious how enamored those two are with one another. Loras would be the fool to let that one get away,” While most people Olenna’s age weren’t quite as accepting of homosexuality, as far as she was concerned, Loras wasn’t hurting anyone by dating someone of the same sex and if anyone had a problem with it, they really should be minding their own business, “However, you can’t tell me that there hasn’t been one young man you’ve been interested in since you moved out here.” It wasn’t that she was trying to push her granddaughter into a relationship, but she did want some great grandchildren someday and she wasn’t getting any younger.
“Loras is no fool either, he won’t let Renly get away I am sure of it” Margaery knew of her brothers plans to propose but felt that information should come from him if he was to share it with their grandmother. “They are very much in love” she smiled, it was good to see her brother so happy. Margaery laughed lightly, “I’m afraid not grandmother, maybe I am simply too picky” There had been a few men who caught her eye but none of them had lasted more than a night.
“That much was abundantly clear,” Even a blind person should have been able to see how much in love Loras and Renly were. While there was a possibility that her son wouldn’t be too pleased about Loras and Renly’s relationship, Olenna was extremely pleased and would defend Loras to Mace until she was blue in the face. “I am sure that you’ll find yourself a young man as well. You can’t let your brother have all the glory, after all.” She smirked as she took a sip of her tea.
Margaery smiled too, “In this I am happy to let Loras shine alone” she replied, “I am in no hurry grandmother. After all I have a lot to focus my attention on with school and career prospects” She couldn’t afford to let love and relationships get in her way, she was determined to achieve what she wanted to.
“While I would like great grandchildren in the near future, I am very glad to hear that you’re so work oriented. Too many girls these days are getting knocked up before they even graduate high school, nevermind University.” Olenna really was extremely proud of the woman her eldest granddaughter was becoming. The move to California could have had a negative effect on Margaery and turned her into one of those girls who does nothing but spend their time on the beach, but she was still the same girl she’d been when she was in Sweden.
“You know that would not be me grandmother” Margaery replied, “I have worked too hard for my independence to give it up so easily. As much as I would love to give you great grandchildren” she smiled. It wasn’t in her immediate plans to have children and, though she would never say it to her grandmother, she wasn’t sure if they were in her plans at all. She had to hope Loras and Renly would fulfill that part of Olenna’s wishes.
Of course Olenna had other grandchildren who could give her great grandchildren, but Margaery and Loras were the two she was closest to. The two who didn’t mind still spending time with their grandmother. And while she knew there were ways for Loras to give her a great grandchild, she also knew that they were a little more complicated than if it were Margaery, “And I’m very glad that you’re so independent, sweetheart. No woman should have to rely on a man for support.” Despite the fact that times had been different when she was younger, Luthor had always let her have her independence and almost never tried to tell her what to do.
Margaery and Loras had always enjoyed their grandmothers company. For Margaery especially she found the older womans ideas and philosophies wonderfully refreshing and, especially when she was younger, had tried to emulate her.
“Of course, I learnt that from you grandmother” Margaery replied, “You have always given the best advice”
Olenna smiled and sipped her tea, “I’m sure your parents are thrilled that you’ve taken after me.” Despite the differences Olenna and her son had, she knew that he had to be glad that if Margaery was going to take after anyone in the family, it was better for it to be her grandmother to prevent her from getting into any situations that she might regret later on. Olenna had tried to do the same with her other granddaughters, but they hadn’t enjoyed spending time with her the same way Margaery did. “Now if only your cousins were smart girls like you.”
“I am thrilled I have taken after you and really that is what matters most” she smiled, “Sadly I believe they may be a loss. I guess Loras and I gained most of the brains in the family” she joked. Her cousins were nice enough but they were airheads mostly. Not people Margaery could or would spend too much time with.
Olenna laughed and nodded, “At least your other brothers have some sense. Not quite as much as you and Loras, but some.” She set her teacup down and retrieved a piece of cheese from the plate, “Now, how many more years do you have of schooling?”
“Loras and I were left alone much more” Margaery replied, “We had less responsibility thrust upon us and more freedom to make our own decisions and form our own opinions”
She smiled, “I have two more years to go before I complete my degree”
“Do you plan on staying here when you’re finished or going home?” Olenna knew that if she were Margaery, she would definitely not go back home. There were far more opportunities for her granddaughter in America, away from the influence of her parents then there would be back in Sweden.
“I don’t want to go back” she admitted, “I am hoping to practice out here once I am qualified, I want to make this my home” She wasn’t stupid and she was enjoying her freedom. It wasn’t something she would give up easily.
That was the answer that Olenna was hoping for and smiled as she set her cup down and reached across the table to squeeze Margaery’s hand, “Just remember that you can do whatever you want. Never let your parents try and guilt you into anything.” She knew that Mace might try it if Margaery said she was going to stay, but Olenna would have some choice words with her son if he ever tried that.
Margaery squeezed back, "Thank you grandmother" she smiled happily, "I promise to do what is right for me" she nodded as she picked up her tea. Yes and staying here was right for her especially with Loras and Olenna being here now. It was damn near perfect.
