Who: Flemeth and Merlin
When: During alien zombie thing
Where: Flemeth’s shop
What: Checking she is okay
Rating/Warning: Low
Status: Complete

Merlin was on his way to check on Flemeth, he knew she’d be okay - after all she had said she’d been eating the zombie things in her dragon form. But he wanted to put his mind at rest and seeing her would do that. He’d enchanted a necklace for Audrey to keep her safe, the spell he’d cast on it ensured the creatures couldn’t come near her and he had something for Flemeth too. Even though she probably wouldn’t need it.

Entering the shop he looked around for her, “Flemeth?” he called out, “It’s Merlin, are you here?”

A large wolf trotted into the antechamber of the shop, followed by a few cats. Some of them were the ones that she’d always had - a surly black one and a sweet natured tabby - but there were about five more following her. With a puff of smoke, the wolf’s form was replaced with Flemeth’s. “Hello, Merlin. I just wanted to rally the rabble outside that refuses to live with me. They can stay here for a short time.”

Anybody else may have been slightly startled to find a wolf wandering into the shop but Merlin knew it was Flemeth before she changed and was kind of in awe at her abilities. “Good plan” he nodded as he bent to pet the cat who was weaving around his legs, “Are you okay? Have they been leaving the shop alone?”

“Oh, I’ve been fine. I think they know. Maybe they smell dragon?” She smiled when Merlin petted the cat. “I’m glad that you’re okay as well, dear.”

“Maybe so” Merlin agreed with a grin, “Oh I made you something” he told her fishing the brooch out of his pocket. It was in the shape of a dragon, “It’s enchanted to keep you safe” he told her, “Feel free to give it to someone else if you don’t need it”

Flemeth smiled. “It’s lovely. May I put it on my favorite?” She motioned at the cats. “As a dragon, I don’t ... really need protection, but the little ones.” It was clear she had a soft spot for the felines.

“Of course you can” Merlin told her, “Gwen, my and Morgana’s cat has an enchantment on her collar. She doesn’t go out but I didn’t want to risk it”

Flemeth leaned down and took the surly looking black cat into her arms. The cat had a tiny, barely audible mew, and Flemeth smiled when it butted its head against her cheek. “He looks scary, but he’s such a weakling. If I can’t look after him, who can?”

“He’s pretty adorable” Merlin told her, stroking the cat’s tail gently so as not to startle it, “I’m sure he appreciates being looked after by you. I know I do” he smiled.

“Speaking of you, how are you?” Flemeth squeezed Merlin’s hand, amused when the cat butted after Merlin for more pets.

He petted the cat happily, "I'm good. Really good actually. I'm going to propose to Audrey" he said letting the words he'd only thought before escape his lips, "You're the first person I've told"

Flemeth’s jaw dropped and she beamed. “Oh, Merlin!” She was so happy she felt tears come to her eyes. “I’m so pleased. I’ll bet she will be too.”

Merlin blushed but his grin remained firmly in place. “I hope so” he said, “I mean we’ve been talking about marriage and buying a house and kids recently so we’re both on the same page”

The idea of kids that Flemeth could babysit made her even more squeaky. She set the cat on the counter and moved to hug Merlin, laughing a little. “I get to be an honorary grandmother?”

“Of course you do” Merlin assured her, returning the hug, “You’re going to be the coolest grandmother ever”

“I’ll take them for horsey rides if they want.” Flemeth could do that easily.

“They’re going to be so spoilt” Merlin smiled, not looking too upset by the prospect.

“Yes, yes they are.” Flemeth couldn’t help but grin. “That’s a grandmother’s job, don’t you know?”

"Right of course" he laughed, "I forgot about that. They are going to love coming here, I can tell already"

“What, because their gran can turn into dogs and cats and horses and dragons? Of course they will. Who wouldn’t?”

Merlin smiled, “You have a point. Not many kids can boast that they have a shapeshifting grandmother who takes them for rides as a dragon. Or at least not kids who are telling the truth anyway”

“Or not ones that are in touch with reality.” Flemeth chuckled, still hugging him. “Oh, I’m so glad you’re happy, Merlin.”

“Or that” he agreed, still fine with being hugged, “I am, I’m really happy” he told her, “Happier than I thought I’d ever be actually. I have Audrey and you and my friends and a good job and plans” he grinned brightly, “I have everything I could ever need or want”

“Well, now you just have to work to keep them. That’s life, I suppose.” Flemeth had her jobs - both the legal and illegal, and her cats and Merlin. That was about it.

Merlin nodded, “I’ll work as hard as I can to keep this forever” he told her with a nod, “I’ll never lose sight of it”

“That’s a good thing. A lot of people take their happinesses for granted. That’s how one loses them.” Flemeth sighed. “It seems silly, doesn’t it?”

Merlin nodded, “Keeps us striving to be better people though I guess” he said, “If we are constantly working hard and not just expecting things to stay the way they are”

“Exactly. Nothing is ever static. The moment we think it is, that’s when it’ll slip through our fingers.” Flemeth kissed the top of her cat’s head.

“And I don’t plan on letting that happen” he told her, “So I plan to be vigilant and appreciative”

“Well, you’ve nothing to worry about, then. Would you like some tea, dear?”

“Tea would be great. And then you can tell me how you’ve been and if you’ve had any interesting customers lately”
