Billy smiled as he headed for Barbara’s place, his modest car trundling along. He had slowly settled into life again as the war ended and life went back to normal. He had gone back to classes and made up the ones he had missed, and even gone back to work. Now, it was time for rest and fun and to him, that meant Barbara. Even if it shouldn’t.
But a recent conversation had wormed it’s way into his mind and he couldn’t stop thinking about it now.
So when he parked and headed for her door, he hoped Barbara wouldn’t be too weirded out by his questions. He carried a pot of homemade Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo .
Barbara’s life had also gone back to normal, if a little busier. She was still sorting out the hospital staffing and a number of companies were updating their risk assessment plans as a result of the recent events. All of them, naturally, wanted her input so she had been working overtime from home. Which meant her dining room table was completely covered with papers and her two work only laptops, but she figured Billy wouldn’t mind eating in the living room.
She’s been happy to agree to dinner, it was a good reason for a break and she was looking forward to seeing him if truth be told. As soon as the bell rang she made her way to the door and opened it, “Billy, it’s good to see you. How are you?” she smiled brightly as she ushered him inside.
“I’m doing great.” He stepped in and looked around, then back at her. “You know, you look amazing.” He refrained from mentioning how sexy and hot she looked as well. Barely. Even if his pants were tenting ever so slightly, already.
“Where can I set up?” He hefted the pot of food.
Barbara colored under his gaze and words, in her opinion she wasn’t looking that good she had on jeans and a nice fitted top but nothing too dressy. “Thank you” she told him before nodding, “Oh of course, follow me” and she led him into the kitchen where she had already retrieved plates and cutlery.
Billy thought that sort of outfit was hot, but then he was an odd guy. He grinned at her blush and nodded. “You’re welcome.” He followed her in and smiled, setting the pot down and uncovering it, unleashing the still hot scent of recently cooked Chicken fettuccini alfredo. “Sweet! I hope you like it!”
As the smell of the meal hit her nostrils she inhaled deeply, “Oh Billy that smells amazing” she told him, “Have you been hiding a cooking talent from me?” she teased him.
“Only a little. I can cook pasta, and nothing else.” He grinned at her, pleased, and reached for the spoon to stir it, then some plates to start ladling it out. “Mom taught me when I was younger, seeing as I have a lot of siblings.” He nodded.
“Don’t put yourself down, pasta is a pretty versatile ingredient to be able to cook with” she replied as she helped him with the plates, “What would you like to drink?” she asked him once the food was on the plates.
Billy blushed and smiled to her. “Chocolate milk, if you have it?” There was no hesitation in his voice as he answered her. “I love the stuff.” He happened to be an addict almost. He had a couple of glasses every day.
“I can definitely provide that” Barbara told him, “I have cravings for strawberry sometimes” she admitted with a grin as she retrieved their drinks, getting strawberry for herself. “I hope you don’t mind eating in the living room, I’ve kind of taken over the dining room for work”
“No worries. How is work coming?” He headed toward the living room with his food, glancing back at her, not even thinking of how the clothing he was wearing really enhanced hsi figure from this point of view. He settled the food to the table, bending to do so, then turned to see if he could help her with hers.
“It’s busy but that’s to be expected. I’m just trying not to get to the point I have before where I’m working constantly” she told him. As she followed him Barbara was definitely thinking about how well his clothes fit him, in fact she’d be content to follow him anywhere right at that moment. Watching him bend over the table made her bite her lip and her eyes were glued to his tight behind, dear god he was temptingly bad for her health. When he turned she knew he’d caught her staring and blushed like a teenager.
Billy blushed as he realized she’d been staring and he stepped closer to take the drinks, and inhale her scent, then away before he could do anything bad. Which reminded him... “I found out something interesting, this week, well, two , no three things.” He sat and waited for her to do so, then continued.
“First, just so you know, I talk to my parents a lot, and while I did not mention your name in connection to this, they know I am interested in an older woman and am not doing anything over the line and have both... they have both expressed two emotions. One, was thankfulness that I actually found someone I was interested in. Two, they told me they trusted my judgment and had no problem with me being interested. Then, they told me the second thing I learned this week.” He chuckled, blushing. “And they told me it right after, so Ah, I am not sure what to think, but... apparently, IN California, if a minor marries a person over the age of majority, which they can with their parents’ permission, then they become emancipated with the full rights of an adult.” He was not glancing at her until the end of that.
She sat and listened as he spoke. Despite his assurances that her name hadn’t been mentioned it did increase her anxiousness though his parents did sound like decent people who knew their son well. Then he told her what his parents had chosen to reveal to him and it was somewhat surprising to say the least. And she had to admit when she first thought about it she found she kind of liked the idea but she was a smart woman so logic and reason soon came crashing back in.
“Billy” she said, “That’s...well, that’s definitely interesting information to know. And from your parents no less”
“I know. And I know I am not ready for marriage and you are not... but... ah, well, I want to pursue you. I know that we can’t have relations and I don’t want your reputation or standing tarred by anything that looks bad."
He looked down. “I am willing to wait, but I want you to know, I am very interested in the idea, someday, of putting a ring on your finger.”
"Billy, its not my reputation I'm concerned with. If anything happened between us I'd be committing a felony, its extremely serious" Barbara told him, before listening once more.
She smiled, "Then I want you to know that the idea is very appealing" she assured him, placing her hand over his since he was looking down and not at her.
“I know, and I don’t want you to get in trouble, either. I know the law is important. Mostly.” Billy smiled softly. He looked up at her then raised her hand to his lips. “Thank you.” Now he just had to find more ways of getting to know her, and he nodded. “Maybe. I mean, if you want, we can do this every week, at your place or mine. Just this. Hanging out, talking, eating.” It was almost a date.
Sort of.
She had to smile at that, it was frustrating but the law was the law. And as much as she wanted Billy, she couldn't break it and risk a prison sentence.
She nodded, "I'd like that" she told him, "And its one way of making sure I at least take one break" she half joked, "But I like spending time with you and I think getting to know each other better is a great idea"
“Sounds good to me.” And maybe he would weasel his way up to two, or three, or four times a week. And get to know her well enough that, who knows, maybe before he was 18, he would put a ring on that finger. “Now, eat. I want to see how you like it.”
He would soon find it would be very easy to increase the number of times a week that they saw each other. Barbara smiled as she picked up her plate and tried the food, "Mmm Billy this is really good" she told him after swallowing her first mouthful.
Billy watched her, grinning and doing his best not to show where his mind went when he watched those lips. Wowsers. He nodded. “Thanks.” And he got to eating more. This was fun! What a crazy ride...
