Faith had thought things in California were weird enough. A series of events that seemed like she’d drunken some poisoned or LSD laced water. She wouldn’t be surprised at this point. But after being jumped on multiple occasion by glowing blue people, she just wanted to get back to work. So she arrived at the medical facility bright and early.
Magius was waiting, and showed her into a small office, closing the door. “Hello. Come in, please.” He wore a suit, with the suit jacket off, and his doctor’s coat laying across his chair nearby. “I have heard you make some runs for items that are needed and sometimes of less than a legal nature.”
Why beat around the bushes?
“Depends on what you mean.” She eyed him warily, half-expecting a trap. But her research hadn’t turned up anything that was a red flag. She was willing to hear him out, but careful with her words to avoid incriminating herself.
“There are medicines produced and sold in Canada that are not legal here.” His magic spread over the room and any electronic devices save the lights turned off quietly. “Those medicines are ones that are not available by any normal means, and yet some of them are far more effective at treating ailments than what is on the market here and far cheaper.”
He eyed her, waiting to see what she thought so far.
“I’d believe that. You want me to smuggle them across the border?” Short and to the point, and she didn’t balk at the idea in the slightest.
“Yes. And to make contacts so that if I need to, I can retrieve them myself, next time. I don’t know them now, and I would need to, in order to do it my way.” He spoke politely and concisely. “I will pay quite well for the job.”
“On top of that, I’d like a fuel, room and food allowance,” Faith replied. It could take her as long as two or three days depending. “I know it seems like a lot, but you’ll probably want me to move as much as I can get away with.”
“Of course.” He opened a desk drawer and pulled out a folder, handing it over. Inside it were names of companies willing to sell the drugs to walk in sellers, and information making it possible for her to research on her own as well. As well as that, there was a check, for a substantial amount, and a reloadable VISA card. Clipped to the outside was a baggie with a new and unused reuseable cellphone and a card with international minutes on it.
“You should find everything there that you need.”
She looked it over, blinking twice at the check. “...You’re still saving money, even with paying me? I wouldn’t want to cost you more than you save.” That was important to her to provide the best service possible. She’d move it, but if it cost more than they were saving, there wasn’t much of a point. “Or is some of this stuff things you can’t get here?”
“Yes. You’d be surprised, or maybe not, how much the companies mark up the really needed medicines here. And yes, some can’t be gotten here at all. While some of this would take years of expenditure and forms to get here. People don’t have that much time. This is saving a lot of money, even so.” And he was paying her to be good at her job.
She looked at the papers. Most of it would fit into most cars. She’d have to take the sedan - her own car guzzled gas like no tomorrow, and the sedan had certain modifications to it that would make this job easier. “Four days tops, and that’s only if there’s a snafu on the way.”
“I doubt you will run into any real trouble, but should you do so, call this number.” He handed over a card that read simply ‘John’, and had a number on it. “The man who answers will come to your aid anywhere, should it be necessary.” Magius sincerely hoped there would be no need to bother John Jones, but with things how they were here, he did not bet on it.
“Thanks. I’m sure I won’t need it, but there’s never a reason not to have a backup plan.” She took the card and pocketed it, along with the rest of the information. “I’ll get you your goods, and I hope they help people.”
“My thanks. They will.” With those medicines, he would be able to help a lot of people who otherwise would get no medicine, even with the clinic’s policies. He rose and extended a hand to her. “Any other details or information you need?”
“I think that’s it.” She took his hand as she stood. “I’ll see you in four days.”
“See you then. Be safe. and Run swift.” He nodded and saw her out. He’s say a prayer for her tonight.
“Thank you.” And Faith would indeed run swift.
