Where: Irvine General
What: Random Encounter
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete!
Faiza came into the hospital for the first time in several weeks. Her duties at the ranch and then several incidents requiring her unique skills had kept her very busy, but she missed the ER.
In light of these husk things, she was glad to be back.
McCoy had been putting in a little extra time at the hospital, considering the husk things. He hated it. A part of him wanted to send Joanna back to her mother, but she actually wanted to be there, to be with him. So he couldn’t send her away. She was staying home, though, which was better for her.
He nearly ran into Faiza in the hallway, his eyes buried in about a half dozen charts he was carrying and trying to juggle between.
“Easy there.” She plucked some charts before they could topple over. “You look positively overworked, doctor.”
“Mmm? Oh, Faiza. Hello.” He gave the other a gentle smile. What he could manage of one, anyway. “I just might be. Went from bachelor to single father of a pre-teen overnight. Not to mention this Husk garbage coming in here left and right... Keeping me on my toes.”
“She’s all right, though? Hasn’t been hurt or anything?” After that last week in June Faiza would believe just about anything could happen.
“So far, no. She’s healthy. A little weirded out at some of the things she’s heard and seen around, but … she’s not on valarnet, which is where most of the gossip is happening.” McCoy said, shrugging his shoulders.
"Seems like a lot if people are blinded when not on that network. Like its a common link." But that wasn't for Faiza to research.
“It’s strange. Can’t tell if it’s a cause or a symptom.” McCoy responded. “But it’s an undeniable coincidence, isn’t it?”
“It’s probably magic,” the British woman replied, not even batting an eye that she’d suggested that. “Something I’m not entirely unused to.”
“No, me either. Something that doesn’t really exist.” Then again, giant space ships shouldn’t exist, either.
“In my dreams, England is a literal magnet for magic things and mythological creatures,” Faiza explained. She snorted.
“A magnet?” McCoy asked. “What does that mean? How... mythological?” He asked, not sure what she meant by that.
“The fairy court, Oberon, Excalibur. I’ve..actually got Excalibur. It’s in the car.” She eyedarted.
McCoy blinked at her. “Excalibur? Like, King Arthur’s Excalibur?” He asked, not quite sure if he should believe what he was hearing. His dreams were from the future, not from ancient legend.
“Yes, like King Arthur’s Excalibur.” Faiza nodded tiredly.
“I don’t understand.” McCoy responded, frowning a little. He reached to pick up the papers he’d been carrying. “Isn’t that a legend?”
“Yes.” Faiza nodded her head. “So is Oberon. And Dracula. And yet in my dreams they exist. Of course we also have people that fly and a man who’s power comes from England, so there is that.”
Aww, come on, Faiza. You’re breaking poor McCoy’s head. “...his power comes from England? How? I don’t understand.”
“In many ways, it’s the power of belief. England has such this..huge history of magic and myth and ancient kings and power...Brian’s power was like that belief made manifest.”
“Wow.” McCoy said, eyebrows now up at his hairline. He wasn’t sure how to respond to that, really. His dreams were more science-fiction, less fantasy. “Sounds pretty intense.”
“It really was. I was such a fangirl for a time.” Faiza waved a hand. “We should get back to work. I fear we’ve discussed too long.”
“Yes, I’ve got patients. But it was nice talking to you.” McCoy said. It was a customary greeting, a default that he went to when he had little else to say. Didn’t mean he didn’t mean the words, though. Then he took off down the hall again.
Faiza nodded, and then went on her own way. She’d have to show him her sword....
