Leia didn’t typically drop in like this. She was a planner. But perhaps, if anything, she might walk away from all of this with a new appreciation for sayings about life taking unexpected turns and God laughing at the plans of mere mortals. She certainly felt like she was being taught some kind of lesson.
She rang the doorbell and waited for Luke to appear. She knew he would be confused. She planned her first words, wondering if there was a way to start talking about the things she needed to talk about without sounding --hm?-- too hormonal.
When he opened the door, all that came out of her mouth was a curt: “Hi. Do you have a few minutes?” And she answered for him by walking into the house.
Luke had been lounging around his house in the comfiest clothes that he could find. No matter how much he loved racing and being on the track, nothing beat being at home able to do what he wanted, when he wanted and wear what he wanted. Plus he got to see his sister and friends too which was definitely more than an added bonus. Both Leia and Han meant a lot to him, they were his two closest friends and Han had been like family for years now. Luke had always wondered why the two of them hadn’t married but he didn’t say a word to either of them, not wanting to ruin their relationship.
Hearing the doorbell ring he frowned, he wasn’t expecting anyone but then again not many people would come around unannounced as it was. Chucking on a decent sweater over the top of his t-shirt, he made his way to the door. Opening it, he grinned when he saw his sister on the other side but before he could say anything she had asked if he had time for her and walked in. He didn’t mind though, it was Leia and really she could do anything really.
“For you? Always,” he told her. “Now what can I do for you?” he asked slightly worried.
She hated to worry him, but there was no way around that. And she didn’t intend to keep him in the dark for very long. In order to see Luke without Han knowing, she’d had to wait until Han had his own errands to run. So, her time was limited.
“Stuff.... has been happening,” she began. She took a seat on the sofa and motioned for her brother to take the other end. “You might want to sit.”
Leia continued, but it was more like she couldn’t keep it bottled inside. “I had a pregnancy scare. Now, before you start worrying, it wasn’t a miscarriage. I was just late.” She tended to be more than a little blunt when she was upset. “It was a week ago. I haven’t told Han anything, yet. Do you think it’s weird that I want to keep it to myself?”
Blaahh! There. The hard stuff was out of the way now.
Luke blinked and blushed for Leia as she told him what she had to say. He might love his sister and be used to how blunt she was but it didn’t mean he liked it when she talked about things like that. He had to think on that though given he had never been in that situation. Yes he was dating Mara but they had never had something like that happen to them as far as he knew anyway and he was pretty sure she would have told him but Leia wasn’t Mara.
“No,” he finally said. “I think it’s alright to keep it to yourself though I also think it would be alright to tell him too. I guess it depends on how he’d react? Truthfully I don’t see Han as a father but then you know him a lot better than I do,” he said carefully. “It is something that could have good effects but also bad effects too?” he added. “Plus it is your life when it comes down to it.”
Leia sighed. She massaged her forehead with her fingertips, and thought about Luke’s initial response. A few words in particular hung in the hair, most notably, I don’t see Han as a father. Leia didn’t know what to say about that, but it chilled her.
“But what does it mean,” she said, “That I wanted to keep this from him. What does it say about me?”
“That you respect your privacy, that you perhaps don’t want him to be disappointed if he does want children or disappointed if he doesn’t,” Luke said carefully. He didn’t want to hurt Leia but truthfully he wasn’t all that sure about what this situation said. Yes he could guess but he was male, he wasn’t knowledgeable about that sort of thing.
Still he could try for his sister’s sake.
And for Han’s sake, she wanted to believe that she had only been trying to be prudent. To avoid getting his hopes up, if that were the case. But that idea felt so forced, so tacked on. It felt more like an excuse than a explanation.
All she could do was shrug. And wish she had a mother to cry to.
“Hey, I’m sure it will all work out regardless,” Luke said added when Leia stayed silent. He had to wonder if he had said the right thing, he wanted to do what was right by his sister and friend but he was a guy and he put his foot in his mouth at times.
She could sense his helplessness. She knew it at once, because it mirrored her own. “Sometimes I feel like I’m walking on eggshells with him. He doubts himself enough for the both of us. I don’t want to push him, you know?”
“Yeah,” Luke said with a nod. “All I can say is show him that he doesn’t need to but this is Han and well... I personally would stop doubting myself if I was with someone as long as you too. You are good together,” he replied giving his sister a comforting smile. “Perhaps talk to him about why he doubts himself? Knock sense into him,” he suggested with a shrug.
Leia smiled. It was her most secret smile. “I’m good at knocking sense into people.”
“That you are,” Luke joked with a laugh. He knew enough of his sister’s skills in that area first hand.
She continued to smile, though her eyes grew glossy. Was it sadness? Something like that. A moment passed and she sighed, reaching out for his hand. “Thanks.”
Squeezing her hand he nodded before moving in to hug her. “Any time.”
