Esme knew Alice was looking forward to the 4th July celebrations so she was making sure everything was perfect for the BBQ. Carlisle was working but would make it back in time for the fireworks as he usually did.
"Alice can you be a dear and fetch the salad out of the fridge?" she called out as she had her hands covered in marinade for the meat.
Alice had about three different Fourth of July outfits. She was wearing one of them today; a red tank top with a white skirt, and a thick blue belt with white stars on it. She was in wedge sandals, blue straps. She looked hot. It was one of her fashionable yet still sexy outfits. “Which one?” She asked, moving to the fridge. “The pasta salad or the potato salad?”
Esme had learnt long ago not to comment on Alice’s outfits, they did always look good just maybe not always appropriate. She let Carlisle deal with it, he had yet to learn that she didn’t listen to them when it came to fashion.
“Hmm, both I think” Esme replied, adding the meat to the marinade before moving to wash her hands. “The boys like them both and they do go well with steak”
Alice nodded. She’d helped! She’d made the pasta salad and the peach iced tea. (Peach iced Tea was something of her specialty. Boil water, steep strong tea, add sweetener, dilute to perfect taste, put in fridge. Not difficult.) She pulled the salads out and moved them over to the table where all the food was being gathered. “I can’t wait for some steak.” She added, her tummy giving a rumble.
Esme smiled, Alice had helped and she had been very grateful for the assistance. She loved family gatherings, with everyone getting older and starting their own lives it was nice to have them all back together. "Plenty of steaks for everyone" she assured her daughter.
“Is Dad doing the barbecuing? Or are Jasper and Emmett going to fight over who gets control of the grill?” Alice asked, smirking softly. It was mostly a joke. Mostly. Her brothers didn’t actually fight, unless they were trying to make the lives of their siblings easier.
“Your father is still at the hospital” Esme told her, “They’re very busy right now so they need all the help they can get. Which means your brothers are in charge of the barbeque. Feel free to offer them advice” she grinned, “I’m sure they’ll appreciate it”
Alice laughed. “Okay, I’ll definitely do that. Though, I’m much better at the eating, rather than the cooking.” She set the bowls on the table and peeled the cling wrap off the top, then grabbed some serving spoons to help out.
“Well you’re in luck because when it comes to barbeque other than preparing the side dishes our job is really just the eating anyway” Esme told her honestly.
“You know, I’m really okay with that. I like my job.” Alice beamed, nodding. “I’ve got a good job. Ooh, that and playing with Nessie. I like that job, too.”
Esme laughed, “Now that I agree with. Looking after Nessie is a most wonderful job” she nodded at her daughter. And she was lucky enough that Edward and Bella allowed her to take her granddaughter for a day every week.
“Grand-children are pretty cool, huh?” Alice asked, leaning back against the counter and watching her mother with a smirk in her eyes. “Maybe I’ll give you one some day.”
“Very cool” Esme replied with a smile, “Oh really?” she asked, “Just not too soon thank you dear. You’re still my baby girl”
Alice laughed. “No, not soon. Very much not soon. There would have to be a boy for that sort of thing to happen.” Her thoughts went instantly to Jasper, for no explicable reason. She shook her head, trying to shake them off.
“And there’s no boy you are interested in?” Esme asked smiling knowingly, she had seen the look on Alice’s face just then and while she didn’t know who she was thinking of she thought it might be thanks to a boy.
Alice shook her head. “No! No no.” She said, going pink. She knew her mother was a mind-reader, she just hoped Esme hadn’t caught on to those thoughts. “No no no, no boys. Nada. None.”
“Uh huh” Esme replied with a grin, “Little less denial next time my dear” she advised her blushing daughter.
Alice shook her head. “Mooommm,” she nearly whined. The way that teenagers do, right? And folded her arms across her chest. “Come on. You’d know if there was a boy in my life, right? He’d be here, or I’d be there.”
“That’s true” Esme admitted setting out some more things ready to take outside, “Unless of course this boy doesn’t know you like him yet” she added mischievously, maybe enjoying winding up her daughter a little bit.
Alice had been mid-sip. She coughed into her Diet Coke. “MOM.” She shook her head, spluttering.
Esme laughed, “Oh Alice, it’s not a bad thing to have a crush on a boy you know” she grinned.
“Depends completely on the boy.” Alice said, under her breath. She picked up the bowl of pasta salad to take to the table outside, and pushed through the door.
As she watched her daughter go she sighed, it was obvious she liked somebody but she wasn’t sharing who with her mother. Which Esme understood but at the same time wished she would. Picking up the marinating meat she followed Alice in order for the boys to begin the cooking.
