Belle was sitting in the front lobby of the building, a sniper rifle cradled in her lap. She was flanked by a pair of Swiss mercenaries. She was openly eyeing the one with his back to her. He had a very nice butt. She smiled when she saw Fang coming. “Let this one through, boys. She’s bringin’ us lunch.”
The men eyed Fang, but Belle opened the door for her. “Vanille’s just beyond the second doors on the couch. You got my slurpee, I see.”
She held it up, waggling it with her free hand as she leaned on her spear. The spear was double ended and appeared to be segmented, like it could be split into separate parts. “Jus’ what Vanille told me you liked. Nice setup. Bit overkill, but y’never know apparently.”
“Ain’t my choice, though I’m always gonna take the option that lets me stare at foreign men’s butts.” She winked at the mercenary she’d been eying. “Mr. Frost is feelin’ a bit. . . protective of his people right now. He just sent a squad out t’ collect his daughter and grandson.” She took the slurpee and sat down again. “Might not let you back out right away, they got a couple guys running around makin’ sure it’s clear before anyone goes in or out.”
“That’s fine. I could make my own way out if I need to.” She nuzzled her spear lightly. She loved her spear. “But I can protect Vanille here.”
“Whichever you like.” Belle said with a shrug. “You’re both safer here than anywhere else.”
“Thanks. Second doors?” She pulled out some sandwhiches for Belle to distribute.
Belle nodded and took the bag. “Yep. She’ll probably tackle you the second you get in.”
Fang actually blushed.
How hard Vanille tackled Fang depended heavily on what all Fang was carrying when she stepped through the doors. Or perhaps, it didn't even depend on the doors. She could smell the arrival of delicious foods and hear voices down the hallway, and soon burst through the doors herself.
"Fang! There you are!" Vanille wrapped her arms around Fang and squeezed her excitedly.
Belle smiled at the excitement in Vanille’s voice and turned her attention back to guard duty. She was sure the girls would be just fine without her interfering.
Fang flailed, wrapping a free arm around Vanille and becoming dizzy at her scent. She had this incredible urge to kiss her, but refrained. She had to bite her lip to pull that off. “Hey you. You holdin’ up okay?”
"Oh sure! You know, it's kinda like an... extended campin' trip, but with people who have guns and stuff and you can't actually go outside!" Vanille thought of it like an adventure. She'd had plenty of time to explore every nook and cranny of the Frost building, sometimes with Belle following closely behind.
“Not my idea o’campin’, but if you’re havin’ fun.” Her hand stroked down Vanille’s cheek. “You’re really not hurt? None o’those things have gotten you?”
"I've never even been close to one!" Vanille replied, completely truthfully. She waved a hand in Belle's direction, "I've got lotsa protectors here, you know? Belle'd never let one get anywhere near me!"
Neither would Fang have, either, if she'd been in Fang's presence, she knew. But she wasn't, and she thought the credit needed to go where it was due, "Didja bring lunch? I'm starvin'!"
“Sammiches.” Fang pulled out one for Vanille. She seemed suddenly nervous. “I know it was a long time ago but...”
It was peanut butter and bananas.
It smelled delicious, and was just about her favorite sandwich type in the entire world when she was making them for herself at home. Sometimes for an added extra treat she'd roll the bananas in brown sugar first.
She bounced on her heels, mouth falling open in a combination of joy and shock, "You remembered!!! You remembered my absolute most favorite kind of sandwich!"
Fang grinned. She was ecstatic that Vanille still liked them. It seemed a little childish but that didnt bother her. The joy on Vanille's face was amazing. "Remember what I'd use to say about it?"
"That it was way too sweet! But I like sweet things and the peanut butter tones it down, you know?" Of course, adding brown sugar to the bananas just counteracted everything the peanut butter might have done for it. But Vanille didn't care, the sandwiches were a delicious treat.
She waved at Belle again, then grabbed Fang's free hand and started leading her through the second doors and over to the couch she'd been sitting on, "C'mon! Let's eat lunch together!"
“I like ‘em salty,” Fang said, letting herself get dragged off. She had a stupid, happy little grin on her face. “I got somethin’ with pickles on it, too.”
Vanille screwed her nose up, "Pickles, why do you have to go and ruin things with pickles?"
She really hoped there was more than one peanut butter banana sandwich for her, if the other options involved pickles. Pickles were horrible!
There were three. Fang had gone a little overboard. “Because I like salty briney things! It adds flavor!” She took out a salt packet to salt her sandwich further. “Y’just can’t appreciate good flavor.”
"... You're gonna salt yourself to death!" Vanille protested, pointing at the salt packet, "Don't you know that salt hardens your arteries? It's bad for you!"
She could only manage to scold her friend for a few seconds though, before she giggled and tucked some hair behind her ear, "You're just silly, that's all. Anyway, havin' a taste for sweet things is a better way to live. Gosh, you made me THREE of them!"
Vanille unwrapped the third one and dug into it with enthusiasm. She'd probably eat all three and then get a stomachache, but she didn't care.
“I bought too many bananas,” Fang explained. She casually reached out to touch the woman’s arm, fingers brushing lightly. She really just wanted to inspect her head to toe, but that would be rude. and there was no brand to flip up the skirt to see
"There's no such thing as too many bananas!"
It was the truth! Bananas were the best things in the world, because they were delicious and tasty and filled with potassium, which was good for you. And she remembered that they could be baked into muffins and breads if they went too squishy. One of the matrons at the orphanage used to do that.
She leaned into Fang's touch without even realising it, and nommed on her sandwich. If the world could be seen in anime vision her eyes probably would have looked like little quarter-moons.
“I didn’t even know if y’still liked those, or would be mad or somethin’. Guess I was wrong, an’ glad of it!” It felt like they could conquer the world together, again.
"I woulda eaten them anyway, just 'cause you remembered what I used t'like! And I should have said, too, you know? When you said you were gettin' lunch, I never told you what I wanted, so I couldn't be too mad at you, could I?" Vanille elbowed Fang playfully.
“You’re the best, Vanille.” Fang laughed and then wrapped her arms around Vanille. She pushed her cheek against the girl’s hair. “Guess not!”
"Careful, now, you'll make me drop my delicious sandwich!" Vanille protested, though it wasn't much of a protest, really. She stretched out the hand that was still wrapped around her sandwich, keeping it secure while Fang glomped and cuddled her. It didn't take much to convince her to hug someone, anyway!
Fang laughed. She inhaled Vanille’s scent. She was a little ripe, but still smelled really good. Like berries and strawberries. It made her hungry for something that wasn’t a sandwich.
The line for the few showers the building had available had been seriously long, with all of the people they needed to accommodate. Vanille'd only had a few since the lockdown started, but she wasn't that self conscious about it.
She snuggled in, then decided to curl up on Fang's lap while she finished her sandwich. It didn't occur to her at all that such behaviour might not be appropriate at the workplace.
Fang just wrapped her close. This behavior was pretty common at her work place. Just not among the staff. Sometimes.
"I'm so glad you're here," Vanille whispered, while grabbing for her second sandwich. Whether she meant here right now or just here in general (as opposed to lost out there somewhere), she didn't specify. It was probably both, but Fang knew her well enough to know what she meant, regardless.
She bit her lip, her hands shaking. Vanille was in her arms and by god she’d never let go. At least until she asked nicely.
