“Okay, so,” the Korean girl was saying, her eyes widening as she watched Irene work. “I’ve been having trouble getting the fabric to move right. It’s not rigid enough, and...oh gross, why is that green?”
Irene couldn’t help but chuckle. “Have you thought about taking out the crinoline? And it’s green because skin starts to decompose almost immediately after someone dies. If we let it alone, it’ll turn purple next.”
She wrinkled her nose behind a surgical mask, but made a mental note about that. “That’s an idea. I’ll have to try it. I had this idea based on a book I read, but it’s hard without any visual reference. So I tried to sketch it out on my own and it’s a lot of work. But it should look awesome.”
“I just figure without the crinoline, you’ll still have a full skirt because that’s how it’s cut, but the fabric won’t stick to the lace or tulle or whatever it’s made of. “Fuck, careful. I think we found the exit wound.” Irene grimaced as she uncovered the stomach of the person, probing the hole.
Hyun nodded her head. Irene knew more about this than she did. She looked up to the other woman. "He got shot in the back? That sucks." Maybe she could cosplay a corpse...But it was more interesting to watch one than be one. She liked learning how things worked.
“Looks like, yeah.” Irene tried to follow the path of the bullet. “The hole seems to say it was a really small bullet, too, which means it’s bounced around like a pinball in here.” Who knew where a .22 would end up.
"If there's an exit wound, then it probably won't be inside him still, right? I hope they found it." She didn't how how true all those CSI shows were. Irene certainly wasn't responding to any crime scenes!
“Exactly.” Not good, but it did happen. Irene started to look around at other organs. “Normally, we follow a set pattern on what we inspect and weigh and all that, but when you find a wound, it’s a good idea to try and trace the bullet’s flight first. The longer you wait, the more things dry up and change and then sometimes it’s really hard to tell which way the bullet went.” She was able to multitask, though. “So, what are you doing for the headpiece? You get that far yet?”
“I have the basic frame worked out. It’s going to be really heavy and awkward, but it’ll look so perfect!” She smiled chipperly. “I just need a shiny enough fabric!”
“Good. I hope it isn’t too heavy.” Irene smiled, still trying to trace the bullet’s path. “Satin was what I used, but I’ve seen people use anything from vinyl to like, linoleum. I don’t know.”
“Vinyl....” She tilted her head, folding her arms over her chest and nodding once. “I think I’ll try that first, it’ll work with the concept I have in mind! You’re so good at this Miss Adler!”
Then something nasty spurted out of the body and she jumped back, squealing.
Irene couldn’t help herself; she laughed. “Sorry. Bile is the last bodily fluid to dry up.” She left it at that; Hyun-ae didn’t need to know about liver putrefaction. “And vinyl might be a little lighter than satin, depending how much you need.”
“You’re right. I’ll need a lot, it’s pretty elaborate.” She looked a little green, but was holding up pretty well, all things considered. She was still trying to decide what she wanted to do in college after all, and any sort of observable experience would help her.
“It just needs to be shiny.” Irene grinned. “We like shiny. I’d look away for a second, this is going to spurt.” She was extracting the liver, and given that part of it was punctured, more bile did indeed come out.”
She covered her eyes comically, making a loud ‘eewwwwwww’ sound. “I don’t think I want to do this for a living!”
Irene laughed. “I can’t blame you. It takes a special kind of person to do this, I admit it. I just love to know why, you know?”
“Well I like to know why too, but I don’t think I love to know why as much?” Hyun decided to maybe stay out of health care. “At least not with bodies.”
“That’s fair. Another good option, if you like knowing the why of things, is psychology. Can’t get much more in depth than that.” Irene weighed the organ, noting down the information on her clipboard.
She blinked. “Oh. Like figuring out people, right?” That was something she could enjoy. People mystified her, and she would be happy to learn.
“Right.” Irene smiled. “Asking why people do what they do. It’s a little less messy!”
“Oh, I think it’s pretty messy anyway just mental messy and not physical messy. I mean you should have seen some of my friends in school they’re NUTS.”
“Fair.” Irene laughed. “I had my messy time in med school, not high school, though, so it could have been worse!”
“What did you do in med school?” She raised her eyebrows, curious!
“You have to get a PhD in order to do this work, so I went and did a specialization in forensics.” Irene was working on the intestines now. “I fell stupid in love with one of the law students, and when he came out to me I had a really hard time with it. Messed up my grades nicely.”
“Oh. I guess that would suck. I don’t think it would matter to me. I mean what the person’s gender was. You love the person not their parts.” She shrugged a shoulder. “But I think it probably helps if you like the parts too.”
“Well, I mean, he told me he was gay. Meaning he didn’t want me.” Irene smiled a little. “I was still crazy about him, but he wasn’t interested.”
“I can understand how you’d slip up in school. I had this crush but it didn’t really go anywhere.” She nodded her head with all the sage knowledge of a teenager.
Irene had to be amused at how wise the girl looked. “You’ll find somebody, I think.”
"I'm not really looking!" But it would be nice, as long as it didn't interfere with her school work.
“Sometimes you don’t have to be. I hope you aren’t planning on showing too much skin at the con, by the way.” She’d have to hurt someone if con creepers got on this girl’s ass.
“A little bit of leg, nothing serious,” Hyun assured her. “I made some modifications to the top because of that.”
“Probably a good idea. There are complete jackasses at these things as well as the good people, unfortunately.” Irene made a face.
“Really? But it’s supposed to be fun. Why would someone ruin our fun?” Hyun made a face.
“Because fun for them is trying to feel up girls.” Irene made a more grossed out face. “I almost got kicked out one year because I kicked one of them in the balls, but I don’t regret it.”
“I hope I’m half as strong as you are.” Hyun didn’t know what she’d do if someone grabbed her like that. Scream probably.
“Screaming works too! I was just wearing big heavy boots.” Irene grinned.
“I like that idea too! Maybe next time I’ll wear a costume with big boots!”
“There ya go.” Irene grinned, reaching for her notes to add final details before she went to type up the autopsy report.
“Thanks. I really appreciate this, you didn’t have to listen to me bug you while you worked.”
“You know I don’t mind, dear. I like helping with good costumes.” Irene smiled at her. “Take out that crinoline and the skirt will fall where you want it to.”
“I’ll give it a try!” Hyun waved at Irene. “I’ll let you get back to your dead guy.”
“Heh, thanks. But let me know if you ever have any questions. I like to help out.” Irene waved back before heading for the computer.
