Portia felt rushed as she flashed her ID and entered the lot. An emergency call asking her to step in for an unwell stylist meant she was being thrown in at the deep end somewhat but she was glad she had been thought of. Obviously word about her was good which was always nice to know.
She wasn’t even sure what show it was for but she knew the lot number and had her kit with her so it wasn’t too worrying. She just hoped that the team she would be working with knew where the continuity photographs were, there was nothing worse than turning up and nobody knowing where anything was when the team leader was absent.
The set was abuzz, and things were fairly crazy, even considering the typical beginning of the week atmosphere. It was the sort of day Gabriel wished he could snap his fingers and transport everyone on the set to his perfect vision of the scene like he’d had in his dream. Not that he thought he’d DO it to people, but the idea that he could do it in the dreams, but not here, was annoying. As was the fact that technical didn’t seem to know where their asses were today.
“You know what?” Gabriel said, after being presented with yet another minor problem that wouldn’t have been an issue any other day. “We’re gonna break for about fifteen, people. Give all of you time to get things figured out. I’ll just be somewhere tearing my hair out.” Okay, really, he was going to swing by the stylists and see what was going on with the temp step in. Sometimes it could be hard to get into the swing of things here.
Thankfully the team had known where the photographs were and didn’t seem too resentful of Portia stepping in. She’d gotten straight down to business and was currently mid way through the setup for the next scene, applying the last touches of makeup after adjusting the actresses hemline. She wasn’t one for stepping back, she liked to muck in and help which was probably why she earned so much respect.
“Tammy, would you mind fetching the darker eyeshadow palette please? We’re going to need it later” when Tammy nodded and ran off to fetch it she smiled, “Thanks” before informing her actress that she was ready. “Please try not to smudge for me”
Gabriel paused, knocking on the trailer’s door frame before peaking hiis head in and offering both of them a little smile and nod. “Hey hey. Gabriel Milton .” He nodded at the temporary fill in artist. “Everything going okay here? Today’s been absolutely nuts so I figured I should check on stuff myself. I know transitioning in at the last seconds’ gotta be kind of rough.” He’d run errands on other sets, or filled in with various departments when he’d been in college so...he got it. And wanted her to be comfortable.
“Anything you need me to ask for?”
“Pleased to meet you” she said holding out her hand, “I’m Portia. Everything is going great. Once the continuity shots were found we had no problems” she informed him, “It’s not the easiest of jobs to step into but I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t confident I could do it for you” she smiled, “You have a great crew, this team especially works well together despite the sudden changes. It’s nice to see”
The next actress arrived and Portia gestured for her to stand on the primping stool, “Nothing I can think of so far, but I’ll be sure to come and find you if there is”
“Great.” Gabriel grinned, leaning back against a spare wall a little, so he could be as out of the way as possible. “It’s good to see you slipping in and seriously thanks for coming. I know it was completely short notice so it’s seriously appreciated.”
“It’s really not a problem” Portia told him, leaving the work to the team for a moment as she spoke to him. She didn’t want to appear too rude for carrying on when he had come to see if she was getting on okay, “I know how hard it can be so I’m glad I could help. Thank you for the opportunity, television is more different to film than you’d think”
“Is it?” Gabriel asked, “I never did do much more than the required bits in the way of scripting and mostly picked up some of the directing from TV workshops along the way, so I’m not really familiar with the film aspects. Television was always, and this sounds crazy, but, more of an escape for me, I guess. Probably because it was THERE and all. So how IS it different?” he wondered, curious now.
“It’s faster paced yet more routine here” Portia replied, “I mean the pace on a movie set is fast but you could be shooting two or three different scenes in one day with the same actors in different costumes or make up requirements” she explained, “Here it seems to be more that the actors stay in one costume but there’s more of them. I mean movies obviously have more than one drapes or make up department as well. But it’s all great fun. That hasn’t changed”
“That makes sense.” Gabriel agreed, nodding at that part. “We do tend to go with the same basic pieces most of the time. Well, apart from Monica.” He added, mentioning the show’s headliner “But that’s one of those other cans of worms really. “ Monica Intervention, in general, was one of those headliners who really, really, could drive you a little crazy by existing. Luckily, this wasn’t a week for any of her storylines so that was a plus. It DOES sound like it’s still fun.” He agreed. “Making another world for a while. I love things like that.”
“Definitely a good thing. I mean I’m sure the team and I could have handled it but experience does have its value for some things” she smiled, “Me too. It’s why I returned to the industry. A friend suggested it as I was between projects and I’m so glad he did”
“So am I,” Gabriel grinned at her. “It sounds like you’re going to do a great job here. And I’ll try to throw in some fun stuff occasionally, so nobody gets too bored.” he joked. Actually, there were a couple bloody scenes coming up but... you know. He could see where the regular stuff got tedious after a bit.
“I’m glad you’re here.” he added. “This is going to be awesome.”
“Thank you” she replied, “I’m definitely trying my best and I highly doubt anybody will have a chance to get bored” She smiled brightly, “I’m glad I’m here too. You’ve been very sweet and welcoming”
“Well, hey. I try.” And it really wasn’t out of a desire to sleep with as many people from the set as he could either. Gabriel just...genuinely liked being around people. And spending time getting to know who he’d be working with and stuff. When he’d been a runner, back in college, he’d dealt with some real jerks, and made a promise to himself not to be that way. He was glad it seemed to be working. “I should probably let you get to work, but you need anything at all, let me know, okay?”
That was a good thing as Portia was happily in a relationship and had a rule never to sleep with anybody she worked with anyway. Especially in this business. “Thank you, I’ll be sure to come and find you if I need to” she promised.
“Great!” Gabriel grinned and turned to head off, to check in with the next department as to how things were going. It was shaping up to be a busy day on set, after all!
