Loki enjoyed these things, really. Sometimes his air of indifference made people think otherwise, but he loved networking and having people know his name. It gave some validation to the work he’d been doing, at any rate.
Now he just needed to work on getting his own spot on the Las Vegas strip. No doubt the things he was learning from his dreams would help with that.
Until then, though, he was glad to stand around and chat aimlessly, sipping at a glass of champagne. He wandered over to the silent auction table to see what was up for grabs.
Amy was doing the same thing. Sometimes hob-nobbing and rubbing elbows with the big wigs was fun. Sometimes it was boring. She was here tonight, hoping to make connections, but for the most part things were dreadfully dull. She moved over to the silent auction table to take a look, but stopped when she saw someone she thought was familiar. She moved closer.
“...Are you? I know you. I’ve seen your face before.” ...didn’t everyone at these things like getting recognized?
Loki glanced over, eyebrows raised. He recognized her - of course he did, Loki had a way with faces and names - but couldn’t recall having ever officially met her. So he gave her a modest sort of smile.
“Loki Odinson. I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure of meeting before?”
"No, we haven't. But I've seen your show." Amy said, giving him a warm smile. "Love magic. It's always so impressive the way the impossible becomes real in the hands of a talented illusionist."
Oh, well, Loki loves it most of all when people are something of fans. He shrugs a little, laughing. “I suppose it’s no different than any other sort of art, but thank you, Miss …?”
“Pond.” Amy was smiling brilliantly. “Amy Pond.” She reached a hand out for him to shake, tickled pink at the interaction--as much as he was. “I don’t think I could do it. I can’t even shuffle cards, let alone cut people in half.”
“A pleasure.” He gave Amy a firm handshake. “It does take a certain amount of discipline. I’m lucky, it just came to me naturally, and by good fortune my brother helped push me in this direction.”
Amy shook his hand, grinning. This was a wonderful meet. Sometimes the people that she met at these events were boring. Sometimes she was uninterested. But Loki seemed really interesting. She was glad to have a chance to chat. “Your brother?” Amy asked. “Oh, you mean Thor?” She added.
He just barely stopped himself from rolling his eyes, and managed to keep the easy smile on his face. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Thor - he did, truly - but it was a hard shadow to get out from. Even if Thor insisted he owed all his successes to Loki.
“The one in the same,” he agreed. “When we were in school, he followed me into drama and acting and found his passion for it. I felt that, perhaps, the acting world wasn’t prepared for two Odinsons and looked elsewhere. I’m glad with what I’ve got, though.”
“Well, I would be, if I was you. There’s a million hot actors out there. Not as many illusionists.” That was the right term, right? Illusionists? Was Magician better? She wasn’t sure. “I’ve been debating stepping out of my comfort zone and trying some new things myself. Acting maybe. Definitely NOT singing.” She gave him a little grin.
“Singing is something I leave completely to the professionals, I agree.” Loki laughed. “What is it you do now? Hopefully you can forgive my ignorance.”
“Modelling.” Amy said. “What, it isn’t obvious?” She added, teasing. “I was MakeMeNew’s cover girl for a while. Been doing a bunch of artsy stuff, but I’ve got some great prospects coming up.”
“Forgive me.” He bowed his head curtly, looking amused. “That must be an interesting sort of profession. I suspect you meet a lot of … Characters.”
Amy didn’t really care. He probably wasn’t as up on women’s cosmetics models as she was on illusionists who performed locally. “It’s certainly an interesting profession.” She said, nodding. “I’ve met some great ones, but about as many terrible.”
“Something I’m certain everyone in this room can say.” Loki toasted his champagne in a slight cheers. “Though it’s nice to finally meet someone who can hold up an interesting conversation. Generally it’s so dull.”
Amy lifted her own in response, grinning a wicked grin. "You've got that right." She said after a quick sip. "It's good PR coming to events like this, but damn if it doesn't get boring." She turned her full attention back to him. "So, do you have more shows coming up in the near future?"
Loki shrugged. “I’m not certain. I get invited, now and then, to do shows in Los Angeles. I’m thinking of finding a local theatre and attempting to get a contract for a running show, but first I’ve got a few tricks that I want to work on. Something to really dazzle and impress.”
“Oh? Working on new material? I’m working on something myself. Not sure that the world’s ready for it yet, but... What are your new tricks?” She asked, turning to him again. “Don’t worry, I’m not expecting you to reveal secrets, or anything.”
“More intimate illusions. Turning one thing into another. It’s easier for magicians to turn things on a larger scale, but smaller things are harder to trick people with.” Loki winks a bit.
Amy gave a bright grin, even brighter at the wink. She nodded. “I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store. It sounds wonderful.” She loved magic. Maybe she’d have to drag John along to one of his shows. “I hope you’ll let me know the next time you’re performing, so I can come.”
“Of course. I try to make public announcements about them - I’m sort of a bit arrogant that way.” He laughed, seemingly joking but really he wasn’t. Not in the least. “But I feel I’m taking up a lot of your time.”
Amy laughed, too. She could be arrogant herself. At least he was being playful about it. It was in the blood of the entertainer or the performer. They had to be at least a little arrogant or they wouldn’t make it in their chosen profession. “Oh, yes, I should get going. I’ve got to meet a man here for an interview, and I’m afraid I may have lost him. But I’ll be on the lookout for that announcement.”
