Lo had taken Velma over to the base, since she preferred to be on the spot while shit was going down. It was light out, so Eli was still at Lo’s place sleeping, but Velma hadn’t been able to sit still. Being here did help some - Faiza was doing work, but there was another girl there that looked vaguely familiar. She was dating somebody, but Velma couldn’t remember who.
She walked up to the girl. “Hi, um. Sorry to interrupt. Did the mission start yet? I’m Velma, I’m dating Logan. Couldn’t sit still at home.”
Candy wasn’t really doing as much work, if only because she wasn’t a doctor. Instead she was reading, trying not to worry about things. “I think it has. I’m Candy, dating Logan’s husband.” She couldn’t resist the crack, even then.
“Oh, Remy.” Velma laughed. “I’ve never met him, just heard about him and his exploits.” She tried to keep lighthearted, but it rankled. “Congratulations on the engagement. Logan’s excited about cake.”
“Of course he’s excited about cake. He’s just covering up his broken heart,” Candy teased. She was amused that Logan had landed this woman; she was gorgeous and classy.
“I know, I’m apparently a poor sad replacement for Remy’s love.” Velma smiled, looking down. “I’m surprised you can be so calm, though. I really want to be out there with Logan when he’s doing this stuff. Not because I think he can’t handle himself or whatever, just ... I don’t know.” She felt useless.
“I know, I wish I could be out there too, but yeah, I’m not ... well, I don’t know why I’m not out there.” Candy just shrugged. She wasn’t an X-Person, and that was fine by her. If she was totally honest with herself, sometimes what she could do scared herself.
“Logan said you have ... powers, or something? Sorry if I’m being rude. I only got like half the story.” Velma managed a smile. “At least you can defend yourself.” Shit. She needed to clam up; she was sounding stupid by now.
“Yeah, I’ve got magic. It’s honestly not all it’s cracked up to be. I mean, I guess I could - if you want... “ Candy ran her fingers through her hair before touching Velma’s hand and mumbling an incantation under her breath. “There.”
Velma blinked. “There?”
“You’re coated in steel. Essentially.” Candy chuckled sheepishly. “Try punching something, or smacking yourself over the head.”
Velma obeyed, shrugging, punching the wall with about half her force. She blinked hard as her fist seemed to hit something cold that most definitely wasn’t concrete. “Holy crap.”
“If you get shot, you’ll bruise, but you won’t die. Figure it’s a little better. Want me to fly you in?” Candy couldn’t help but grin loudly.
“I ... ” Velma swallowed. “Yeah. Think I can find a weapon there, or is there one here?” It was crazy, that someone could do this, but she couldn’t stand here and rationalize. If she wasn’t going to get hurt, she could draw fire away from Logan and his people doing whatever they needed to do.
“I think there’s some guns in here, if you know how to use those.” Candy wiggled her fingers and a sword made of light came into her hand.
“I can use a shotgun.” It would be something. Velma had been about to go get one when she saw Candy’s ... sword. Thing. Whatever. “Wish I could do that. C’mon.”
“It’s less handy than you’d think.” Candy moved to a more clear area in the grass, and started to twirl a bit, chanting to herself. Soon there was a golden hovercraft type vehicle floating at her feet. “C’mon, hop in.”
Velma stared. “It ... flies?”
“Yup.” Candy grinned, a wicked, happy thing. “Don’t tell Remy, though. He doesn’t know yet and I want to surprise him.”
“Wow.” Vel laughed. “I’ll try not to tell. Let’s just ... go.”
