If he were completely honest, Renly was somewhat nervous about meeting Loras’ grandmother. He’d heard about the woman a few times from Loras and from what he saw on Valarnet, she was extremely outspoken and he had no doubt that if she thought that he wasn’t suitable for her grandson, she wouldn’t hesitate to tell them. Of course, her opinion of him wouldn’t change how he felt about Loras and wouldn’t make him go away, but he didn’t want a situation like that to cause any problems with Loras and his grandmother, because he knew that they, along with Margaery, were very close.
Having been invited over to Loras’ for tea, to meet Olenna, Renly picked up a bouquet of flowers on the way and upon reaching the house Loras shared with his sister and Obi-Wan, he rang the doorbell and waited.
“Someone’s here!”
It only took one dog to get the rest of them going. Where they would have otherwise just barked, they instead sang a song just for Renly. Loras pushed them away from the door frame with his foot as he opened the door, looking tired and irritated. Maybe they should have done this another time.
“Hurry up and kiss me while they aren’t looking,” he said, pulling Renly close by the belt loop.
Hearing the dogs through the door, Renly couldn’t help but smirk a little. This entire situation was extremely strange. That morning, when he had gone for his morning run, he’d actually had a flock of seagulls cat calling him. He was fairly certain that he was going to wind up having nightmares about that.
“Having some trouble in here?” He asked, smirking as Loras opened the door and pulled him close. Deciding to not make Loras wait, he leaned in closer and pressed his lips to the younger man’s.
Olenna hadn’t been the least bit surprised when her grandson had told her that he wanted her to meet someone. Loras hadn’t told her much about him after that, but as she came into the room, she assumed that the man Loras was kissing must have been him, “I assume this is the someone you wanted me to meet.” A smirk spread across her lips, “Unless you’re extremely friendly with the mail carrier.”
Even though his grandmother knew his sexual preference, Loras snapped out of it by habit alone. When he saw it was her and realized that he was no longer hiding, he tentatively took Renly’s hand and guided him further into the house, his cheeks blazing pink. “Grandmother, I’d like for you to meet Renly Baratheon,” he said as he shut the door. “Renly, this is my grandmother, Olenna, here from Sweden.”
At the sound if the older woman's voice, Renly pulled away, if for no other reason than the fact that it might be considered rude or awkward to be kissing her grandson like that right in front of her. When Loras took his hand, he squeezed it reassuringly even while he thought the flush to Loras' cheeks made him look extremely adorable like a kid who had been caught doing something wrong, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Tyrell. These are for you." He held the flowers out towards her.
Olenna found it quite amusing how the two moved away from one another when she made her presence known. As Loras brought the dark haired man closer and introduced them, Olenna smiled and took the flowers, "You as well, Renly. And thank you." She wasn't often taken in my things like flowers, not anymore, but it was obvious that he was nervous and wanted her to like him, "And please, call me Olenna."
So now they’d met, and Loras wasn’t going to let them stand around awkwardly and ask each other ridiculous questions. He swallowed dryly and shifted his hand up Renly’s arm, then to the small of the man’s back, allowing both Renly’s hands their freedom. “Renly is...” he started. He looked at Renly. He’d never actually introduce Renly to someone before, except for Obi-Wan who already knew who Renly Baratheon was for how could he not? With startling clarity, he understood what it meant to introduce Renly this way, most especially to a member of his family. He needn’t introduce him this way to Margaery, because Margaery knew, it was just intuition for her. If his grandmother knew, Loras had no way of knowing it save for the comment she’d made when she’d seen them kissing. Finally, the Knight of Flowers returned his gaze to his grandmother, a woman who by all rights should be old fashioned enough never to accept what was going on in front of her; somehow, Loras wasn’t concerned with that. “Renly is my boyfriend,” he said at length.
When Loras’ hand moved to the small of his back, Renly turned to look at him, a smile upon his lips, one that was usually only reserved for Loras when they were alone, but he thought that in this moment, as he was introducing him to his grandmother, Loras might need a little bit of reassuring in order to do that.
While it was true that most people Olenna’s age were very old fashioned and believed all that rot about gays being wrong or same sex marriage being the work of the devil or whatever it was they were saying these days, all she cared about was that her children and grandchildren were happy. If Loras wasn’t hurting anyone by dating another man then who had the right to tell him it was wrong? Honestly, people needed to mind their own business instead of getting into other people’s. As she watched her grandson and Renly, it was quite clear that Renly wasn’t just a current boyfriend. Anyone with eyes in their head and a little bit of common sense could see that they were completely in love with one another. “Well, with the way you were carrying on at the door, for the whole neighborhood to see, I would hope so.”
The Knight of Flowers’ cheeks fairly blossomed as he stood with Renly, ducking his chin down when he laughed softly. No doubt his grandmother would soon have dreams of Renly, but to say anything about them now would just sound mad. He did wonder, though, if Renly remembered his grandmother from his own dreams. “I’ll put the dogs outside,” he told them as the three boxers began to give their opinion on Renly and Loras. It wasn’t unfavorable, but Loras didn’t really need a montage.
Renly hadn't really thought about it before, mostly because his first dreams had been party fever induced, so they were all jumbled together, but now, standing there in front of Olenna Tyrell, Lady Olenna Tyrell, he recalled her being in King's Landing, for a time, not long after Loras had become his squire; after all, Loras had been quite young then.
Olenna shook her head as the dogs started talking and reached for Renly's arm, "While Loras does that, why don't you escort me to the kitchen, Renly." Of course Olenna could get to the kitchen well enough on her own, but it was more of a test to see how Renly would respond and to her delight, he smiled and agreed then glanced at Loras and gave him a smile before leading Olenna into the kitchen.
Loras put the dogs out just in time to come back and see his noble stag graciously walking his grandmother to the kitchen, even though Loras knew perfectly well that his very capable grandmother could go on her own. When he moved to the kitchen himself, he asked, “Are you hungry? Thirsty?” He was addressing them both. By now, he was used to cooking for both himself and Obi-Wan so he had no qualms about doing the same for his grandmother and his king (boyfriend was not yet a word that Loras was used to).
"Some tea would be nice," Olenna said as she took a seat at the kitchen table then gestured for Renly to follow suit, "Enough for three of course." Whether or not Loras and Renly wanted tea, if had just been decided for them. "Now, tell me how you met." She looked from Renly then to Loras.
Depending on who he was talking to, that was a somewhat difficult question to answer. For Renly he felt as if they'd known one another for years instead of only almost one. "Well, it was almost a year ago," Renly started, glancing towards his knight.
A year. Loras let out a laugh as he gathered everything to make tea for three in his kettle. Yes, a year, or many years ago as it were. Loras met his king’s gaze with a knowing shine to his eyes, then began to prepare tea leaves into their bags. “We met at a Chinese restaurant,” he said, then corrected himself. “No, it was a Japanese restaurant, and I thought...I thought I recognized him from somewhere.” Oh gods, were they the couple with a story?
If you asked Myrcella, she would say yes, “Well, Myrcella does think that our story is terribly romantic.” Renly returned the smile then turned back to Renly’s grandmother, “We didn’t get to spend very much time together though, because my father died shortly after and I was made to go back to England quite quickly. Unfortunately I was unable to let Loras know, but I came back in December to find him and explain.”
Olenna nodded as she listened, already aware that Myrcella was Tywin’s granddaughter; after all, he’d mentioned her when they had, had dinner when they’d talked briefly about their families. “I never knew your father, but I had certainly heard of him. I’m sorry for your loss,” She paused for a moment before speaking once again, “But, it appears to me that everything worked out in the for the two of you.”
Loras kept quiet for a moment. Talking about when Renly left without a word was still painful for him. Most of the time, he chose not to so he let Renly talk as the kettle whistled. Loras poured the tea into three separate mugs. “It appears that way,” he said, giving a smile to Renly. “Milk and sugar?”
Renly didn't necessarily like talking about when Stannis had made him leave, but he'd figured that Olenna would find out eventually, so it was just better to tell the whole story from the start. "If I'd had it my way, I would have told Loras I was going home for a little while then come back much sooner." Or he would have taken Loras with him. There were so many 'What Ifs', but really none of that mattered, because they were together now and he wasn't going anywhere.
"Yes, please." Olenna said, figuring Loras would know how much she took in her tea, "No sense dwelling on the past. You're together now, which is all that should matter." She glanced from Renly to Loras, "Do your parents know about the two of you?" She didn't think that they did otherwise she surely would have known as well.
Forgetting the past was not likely, but Loras had moved on. He just didn’t like to dredge it up. To his grandmother’s question, he didn’t hesitate. “No, mum,” he answered with a shake of his head. His parents did not know and would not know. If they did, they would cut Margaery off and Loras would not have it. They could cut him off, he was financially very well off, but Margaery would be very hurt.
If her son and daughter-in-law even attempted to cut Margaery or Loras off as a result of Loras’ relationship, Mace would certainly get an earful and she’d received more than enough money after Luthor’s passing that she would be able to support herself and her granddaughter if her son ever did something as horrific as that. Honestly, sometimes her son infuriated her. “Do you have any cheese and crackers?” She asked, deciding to steer the conversation away from her son and daughter-in-law.
Renly could understand Loras not telling his parents about them; his own father hadn’t been pleased about his sexuality and had chosen to ignore the fact that his youngest son was gay, much the same way he’d ignored him most of his life. Renly liked to think that his mother would have accepted it, but it was hard when he could barely remember her. Turning his gaze to Loras, he gave him a sympathetic smile before turning back to Olenna, “So, is this your first visit to America?”
Loras thought for a moment. He didn’t keep cheese and crackers in the house for himself, that would completely break his diet, but maybe someone else did. He opened the fridge to find a good cheese that either Margaery or Obi-Wan had bought, or maybe even Reny for his visits to the house. He kissed his grandmother on the cheek on the way to the pantry to find crackers, grateful for her clever change of subject.
It hadn’t been Margaery or Obi-Wan who had bought the cheese, but Olenna herself. She was rather fond of cheese, especially with tea and had decided that for the duration of her time, staying with her grandchildren, she was going to have cheese readily available to her. At Renly’s question, she nodded, “It is. I grew up in England then moved to Sweden when I got married.”
Renly had easily picked up on her English accent, which was different from both Loras and Margaery’s, so he’d assumed that she wasn’t originally from Sweden like the Tyrell siblings. “It was my first time out here as well. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it out here.” He couldn’t see how she wouldn’t with Loras and Margaery there, after all.
Enjoy it felt like a dubious statement to make. Whether or not his grandmother actually would enjoy it once the dreams started or something crazy happened remained to be seen. He smiled over at her. “I’m glad you’re here,” was all he could say.
