Nate smiled as Cora materialized, and he bounced. Yes! He came to meet her, grinning as he held out his arms to her for a big big hug. Hugs were needed. Definitely.
They were in a small room with the control panel and a few computers, as well, with one door behind Nate. Out that door and down the hall was the ship bay where the Starjammer and the Starfighter Prime sat.
Cora felt like maybe she ought to hold on to something, but she wasn’t quite sure what to hold on to. And then she was there, in what she guessed must be Nate’s transporter room; and flinging herself into his arms.
“So let me get this straight,” she said, “You have a space station, and you just so happen to be a time traveller? Should I start calling you ‘Doctor’ now?”
“No. Please no.” He hugged her and kissed her nose, grinning, enjoying just having her in his arms. She felt good there.
“I’m just me. If you have to call me a code name, call me Cable.”
Cora smiled, and burrowed into that embrace. “If I call you that, then you’d have to call me Arana, and I don’t know if that’s me. Not yet.”
“Makes sense. I’m not the Cable from the dreams, anyway. I’m my own person, and not quite him, even if I’m no longer completely the person i was before the dreams.” And the time travel, and the aging up, and...
Nate hugged her tight and smiled, inhaling her scent and knowing he was so lucky.
“I like you,” she murmured, from somewhere in the depths of his arms. Not that she really knew Cable from the dreams, except from what Nate had told her, but she liked Nate just the way he was. “So tell me about all of this.”
“I like you too, Cora, my dear Cora.” He kissed her hair and her forehead and then grinned. “You got it.” He led her to the controls. “This is a backup control panel that allows me to control functions should Professor be down, or if I just feel like doing it manually. Professor is an intelligent computer program that runs the whole place. He runs machines that can help me use my powers and also the teleport machines. Right now, I have him running a few tasks.”
“I still have time to say hello, Nathan.” The voice was gentle, and sounded almost like a nice young man’s voice. “Hello, Cora Mallory, Be welcome here, always.” Her comlink buzzed for a second. “If you ever need to, you can call me from your comlink, day or night.”
Nate grinned.
Cora smiled as the computer spoke, her eyes dancing. “Hello, Professor,” she said, “Thank you for having me.” She hugged Nate, and smiled up at him. “And thank you.” It was one thing to daydream about adventures like this, but another to actually be able to do it. “This is really amazing.”
“You are welcome, Cora.”
Nate smiled softly at her and kissed her nose and then grinned. “You’re welcome. From me, too. I never thought my dream place would come here. I’m afraid it means things might get really dangerous soon. Another reason for us to have adventures while we can.” He hugged her. “Your parents said it was okay?”
“Yes. Well. Conditionally,” she said, hugging again. “I think they might like to talk to you first, before we disappear.” But it hadn’t been an outright no, so she had a feeling they’d be able to work something out. After all, if she was going to be sixteen, she was going to have to be entrusted with responsibility eventually.
“We can do that, after I give you a tour of this place.” Nate nodded. He had expected as much and was hopeful. Very hopeful. He took her hand and led her out into the corridor. “Left to the lab and the rest of the station, or right to the main and cargo bays?”
“Right,” she decided, figuring they could take a quick peek at the cargo before exploring the rest of the station. There was probably a lot to see. “How did you acquire a space station, again?”
Nate chuckled. “In the dreamworld, I built it using components in the 45th century. In this world, it just arrived in a meteor shower.” He shook his head. “So, I dunno...”
He led the way out and to the right, leading her down a hallway, and to a pair of doors opposite each other. He opened one and stepped in, drawing her along after him, into the main bay. The far wall was a forcefield, a window into space that allowed them to look out on it, and down on the Earth, looking huge and beautiful below them.
In front of the wall, and the Earth, were two spaceship, and the foundation of a third. “That long one there? That’s the Starjammer. That belongs to Uncle Alex and Aunt Lorna. And the small one? That’s the Starfighter Prime. That belongs to Alex Rogan, who’s a friend.” He grinned at her, eyes warm as he led her toward the window wall, and gestured out ward. “This is the best view, ever.”
Cora took in the view with wide, wonder-filled eyes; threading her fingers through Nate’s and clutching his hand tightly as they walked toward the forcefield. Of course she knew that it was perfectly secure--it would be quite obvious if it weren’t--but she still felt a flutter in her stomach, similar to looking out the window of a very tall building. Thrilling, awe-inspiring, and a little nerve-wracking at the same time. But mostly thrilling. “I can hardly believe that’s really Earth, and not just a picture on a giant movie screen.”
Nate smiled, tucking her close to him, and hugging her, as they watched out the window wall. “I know. Even knowing this was here, seeing it for the first time here made my heart pound, and it’s still the second most beautiful sight I know.’ He was looking at her, and smiling softly.
Corazon realized that the most beautiful sight he was talking about must be her, and she felt herself blush. Her voice was soft, hardly more than a whisper as she gazed up at him. “Really?”
"Really. I've seen a lot of sights, in three lives, and I've met a lot of people. You are the most beautiful sight to me."
Nate smiled softly. There was no exaggeration in his words. Maybe it was because of how he felt about her, but no other sight caught him like she did.
Cora smiled, and hugged him, ducking her head against his chest. “I think you’re pretty handsome, too.” It didn’t sound as poetic as what he’d said, but it was true.
He smiled as he hugged her close, and stroked her hair, snuggled her like this. It was perfect. “Thank you. Glad you think so.” he kissed her hair, smiling.
“Want to take a walk around this big rock?”
“Yes, please,” she said, looking up at him with an excited little bounce. “I want to see everything! Unless it’s Top Secret, but you know. Everything.”
“I, ah... “ He blushed. “There are areas of this place no one else has ever seen, but I want to share it all with you.” He smiled softly. “Might have to do it in parts. It’s 31 miles long and 5 miles tall at it’s greatest point. But I want to show you everything.” He nodded.
“Oh...” Cora nodded, still marveling at the surreality of the situation. It was amazing! “I think we have time to explore over the summer. In between classes and things.”
Nate nodded. “I think so too. It sounds like a good plan to me,” He nodded and led the way out. It was a nice start to a new adventure.
