What: Two friends hanging around
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
Hermione texted her new(ish) friend Penelope so they could meet up at a coffee shop and hang out a bit. She was looking forward to getting out, talking to someone who wasn’t her husband for a bit. Summertime without school or work, meant she’d become a bit of a hermit. And she was happy to have someone else to sit and chit chat with.
She arrived early to the shop, ordered her tea, and leaned back in her chair, holding the drink between both hands as she waited. There was a Kindle sitting on the table in front of her, but Hermione was staring off into space.
Garcia soon came into the shop. It was a Saturday, but with two full-time jobs, she was still coming from work. Her bright blue dress fluttered a little in the wind, and she pushed into the coffee shop.
Finding her friend, she waved and walked over, red heels clacking merrily.
Hermione came around and broke into a smile. "Hi!" She said to her friend, eyes coming into focus.
“Heya!” Garcia beamed, leaning down to hug Hermione. “How’re you?”
Hermione lifted her arms to hug her friend. “Good! Trying to find things to do to keep myself occupied over the summer, you know how it goes.” She beamed. “How are you? How’s Stark Industries?”
“Good! I came from my other job, Stark’s my Monday through Friday, eight to five gig.” Garcia looked exhausted because she was, but it was totally worth it to get to see Sebastian Vael more.
“Oh? What’s your second job?” Hermione asked, now feeling a little embarrassed that she didn’t know. Hermione was now sort of wondering if she should find some employment--just to have something to do when she wasn’t focused on school.
“I’m helping patch a security network for a company my friend owns.” She didn’t really want to go into the whole ‘I only work there because I’m madly in love with my friend’ part. It was kind of sad, when she thought about it.
“Oh, I see. More computer techie stuff.” Hermione grinned. She was really impressed with it all. “Duh, Hermione, what else would you be doing?” She asked, playfully teasing herself. “It’s not like you’re an IT professional by day, and a waitress by night, or something.”
“I’d be the worst waitress, oh my god. There’s so much foodie lingo I just don’t get. Everyone would just get whatever came out first.” Garcia wrinkled her nose and laughed. “I was a hostess in college part time, and they were lucky I figured out the way seating worked by my third week.”
Hermione laughed. “I know what you mean. I’d definitely be giving salads to people who ordered soups and that sort of thing.” She shrugged a little. “I did it for a little while. Waitressing, I mean. But it wasn’t a fancy place, it was a diner. Mostly just burgers and fries. I’m not working at all now, so I’ve got plenty of time on my hands.” Too much time, really.
“You sound sad about that. Do you want to find a job? Or are you working more on school? You could find something to do with the summer,” Penelope offered helpfully. She liked helping her friends out.
Hermione nodded. Penelope was a bit of a mind reader. “I’m thinking I really should figure out something to do. Keep myself busy during the summer before school starts back up again.” She was sort of thinking out loud. “You don’t know where I could find something part-time. Are they hiring interns at Stark?”
“God, I’m sure they’re always hiring. I could drop your resume by HR, let them know that you’re amazeballs smart and ridiculously gorgeous.” Garcia winked and grinned broadly. “I’d love to have lunches with you in the cafeteria!”
Hermione laughed, going pink. “Amazeballs and ridiculously gorgeous? I’ve got the wrong things on my resume. Okay, I’ll email you. Pdf okay?” She asked, drawing out her phone to click a few buttons and shoot off her resume to Penelope’s email.
“Yup, that’s perfect. I’ll turn it in on Monday.” Garcia beamed, making sure she recieved it on her phone. Probably better to have people send her stuff than to root around in their phones.
Hermione was pretty technology savvy. She’d been getting more so since she found out about the Enterprise, surprisingly enough. She pocketed her phone again, thrilled that Penelope was going to help her. “It would probably be a lot less boring if there were more things that my friends wanted to do that didn’t involve drinking and partying. That’s just not me.”
“I don’t mind going out every once in a while, but I’m way more of a ‘stay home and play video games while drinking fruit juice’ kind of girl.” Garcia liked adult beverages just fine, but getting drunk every night was terrible for the skin and the wallet.
“What sort of video games are you interested in?” Hermione asked, now growing curious. She hadn’t played that many, but playing video games (with or without the adult beverages) sounded a lot better to her than trying to go out to bars or whatever else.
“Oh, lots of them. Mostly the fantasy ones online - World of Warcraft, Path of Exile, Diablo 3, things like that.” Garcia smiled, glad that she’d made a few really good friends from her gaming time too.
“I played some Warcraft for a while. I lost touch with it, though. It’s a great game.” She gave Penelope a smile. “I should get my computer set up so you can show me some tricks.”
“It really is fun. And I can help setting up your computer, too, get it really humming great on the cheap end.” Garcia was all for tricking people’s stuff out; it was like her duty as a techie.
“That’s wonderful! You do that overclocking stuff? So long as my computer actually runs, I don’t really need it to go super fast. Just... fast enough not to crash!” Hermione said, grinning.
“I can do that for you.” Garcia grinned a little. She could give Hermione a computer that would practically never crash and run like a Ferrari.
“Amazing. It’s good to have friends in high places.” Of course, she probably could have some sort of amazing, super computer thing from the Enterprise... but that would be hard to explain. She leaned back in her chair. “Maybe over the weekend we can get together? Have a LAN party? Play an MMO, or something?”
“Oooh, that’d be fantastic!” Garcia’s eyes lit up. “I’ll soup up your box - yes I know it sounds dirty that’s just how it is - and then we’ll go smack some dragons!”
Hermione was thrilled with the idea. “Absolutely!” Girl time! ...kinda. It’ll give her a chance to socialize with people who weren’t her husband! Yay! “Okay, I’ll come to your place, bring the box, and we can set it all up and play. Or wait, do you want to come to my place instead?”
“I’ll come to yours, that way I can set everything up for you and you won’t have to move it again.” Garcia was beaming, just thrilled at the idea of getting to tinker.
“That sounds perfect!” Hermione responded. She was just as excited! Having a computer she could play games on, and someone she could play with? Priceless. “Just let me know when you’re free!”
Garcia nodded, jotting down her schedule on a napkin. “But okay, I should hustle home for sleeping for a while before work again.” She waggled her eyebrows. “Never done!”
