Zelda didn’t have work, and she hadn’t had any problems with stalkers in a while. She also hadn’t seen Link in a few days, and missed him. She was worried that he was having problems with her roommate situation, so she wanted to set his mind at ease. Not to mention what she’d talked about with Navi. That was pressing on her mind, too. She got up extra, extra early, dressed in her gardening clothes, pulled her hair into a ponytail with a scarf, grabbed a Red Bull for breakfast, climbed into one of her cars, and drove herself to Link’s farm. It was so early that the sun was barely up. The world was in twilight. Zelda drank her entire Red Bull on the way, and was bouncy by the time she got there. She pulled into the drive, parked, then headed out to go and visit the cows.

If he wasn’t there already, she’d sit down and start milking. Maybe she could surprise him with a bucket by the time he got there!

He wasn’t there quite yet. He was in the shower when Zelda parked, so he hadn’t heard anything. And she was already in the barn by the time he finally stepped outside, so when Link entered to greet the cows, he got quite a surprise. He actually gasped. “Hey! What are you doing here?” he asked, his smile very broad.

Zelda heard the footsteps over the gentle, rhythmic zing! of the milk squirting into the bucket. She leaned over around the side of the cow so she could see him in the doorway, and broke into a huge smile herself. His smile was gorgeous. She was reminded of what she’d said to Navi, the conversation that led into, and her cheeks went rather pink. But she was grinning. Excited. “Hey! I thought I’d surprise you!” The look on his face told her it was a good one.

“Well... job well done.” Link walked over to Zelda and watched her work. She looked as though she really had the hang of milking now. The bucket already had a good amount in it. “Looking good.”

And she was, too. Really cute in her casual, farm-friendly clothes.

Zelda beamed. She finished milking the cow she was working with, then reached up and patted her side gently. The cow turned to look at Link and Zelda, and gave a gentle “Thank you, Dearie.”

Zelda sprung up from her stool and took a step back, shocked. That cow had just... spoken English?? She turned to Link. “She talked. That cow just talked!”

Link leapt back, but not before grabbing Zelda by the shoulders and taking her back with him. He held her protectively, not that the cow was any obvious threat, but it had just talked. “Oh my God!” he exclaimed. And it wasn’t even one of the Lon-Lon cows.

The cow looked back over her shoulder. “All that milk was getting heavy.”

Zelda’s heart was thundering as she stared at the cow. Link’s protective arm in front of her made her feel safe, but she was still in awe. The cow wasn’t attacking. Didn’t pose a threat. But Zelda had certainly been startled.

“...you’re welcome?” Zelda said, her voice shaking a bit.

“Me, next,” one of the other cows turned to look at the pair of humans in the barn. Then, other cows chimed in. Apparently they all wanted to be milked next.

Link gaped. It was as impressive as it was frightening. He’d always felt he understood his cows thoughts, but he ever thought he’d hear them actually voice them. He gulped. “You didn’t... do anything to them. Like, a magic spell or...?” The Zelda in his dreams could use magic, after all.

“I didn’t do anything. Just milked...” Zelda shook her head. Almost frantically, still staring at the cows. She had no idea how excited the cows got over being milked. This was just... kinda weird. Like The Birds weird. Suspenseful and frightening.

“Should we... um... get to work? Or uh... do we leave because it’s a little weird?” She asked, not sure what she was supposed to be doing now.

“Well... We gotta milk the cows...” Slowly, Link relinquished his protective grasp on her. There wasn’t another way around it, it had to be done. And better him than one of the unaware farm hands.

He picked up another bucket, though none too quickly. He found the whole thing pretty freaky.

It was a little strange to be milking a creature that could vocalise how good it felt to be milked. But Zelda reached for a new bucket and moved to the next cow, now that Link seemed it was the thing to do. She grabbed her stool, sat down, then started milking.

And did her best to ignore the groans of the cow. It was half-way between relief and pleasure. Very awkward.

It was not the kind of sound you wanted to hear from a cow. “I’ll never listen to mooing the same way again, that’s for sure,” Link said, settling down at the cow next to Zelda’s.

“Especially not while milking.” Zelda said. She was almost wincing at the sounds. But she was much, much better at this now, and it took less time than the first time she’d ever milked a cow.

“...So, um...” She said aloud, turning to grin awkwardly at Link. The soundtrack of the cows moans made the thoughts in her mind feel a bit gross. A bit dirty. Maybe it wasn’t the best time to bring up what she’d wanted to talk to him about. “...I guess I surprised you this morning?”

Link chuckled. “Yeah, a little bit. What gave you the idea to come over so early?” He looked at Zelda, not at his hands or the udders, and tried to ignore the sounds.

"I missed you.” Zelda said, almost shyly. Then her cow gave a little groan, and she snorted back a somewhat bitter-sounding laugh. With every sound the cows made, the idea of bringing up that particular subject--the one she’d talked to Navi about--filtered farther and farther out of her mind. “Actually, I wanted to see the cows again, help you with chores." She grinned at him, going even more pink when the cow shuddered. "It was fun the last time, so I thought I'd surprise you. Four hands are better than two. We can get things done and then maybe spend some time together?"

Link’s smile remained, but there was a slight, hardly noticeable faltering. He turned back to his bucket to hide it further, just in case. He couldn’t help but wonder if her visit had anything to do with the fact that Jack was living at her place. There was no pretending he hadn’t reacted strongly, maybe even poorly. Maybe this was Zelda trying to reassure him, which was a good thing, but he didn’t know if he liked that she felt she had to, if that was the case.

“Yeah, that sounds great,” he said, still kinda staring into the bucket.

She’d been honest. She missed him and wanted to see him. She’d wanted to talk to him about their relationship, where she wanted it to go, and what came next for them. Not to mention how cool milking cows was. Well, when they weren’t making like, orgasm noises, or whatever. Zelda was trying to ignore that the best she could, and was staring into her own bucket so she missed the look on his face.

“Good. That’s a plan, then. I’ll help you finish this, then we can go... I don’t know. Whatever it is you do next on a farm?” A part of her hoped that would involve some kissing. Or more than kissing. She wondered for a moment if what Navi said was true. Did Link want more?

“Well, today I was going to run the irrigation machines, cos it’s been dry,” Link replied. He tried to keep his other work light when he was on milking duty. “It should take about an hour.” All in all, it would be mid-afternoon by the time he was done for the day. Maybe a little earlier, since he’d have Zelda’s help, but there was so way she could match his speed with the cows. “I bet you didn’t realize you signed up for so much work.”

"It's not really work when it's this fun." Zelda grinned softly, still working on the cow. "I'll just shadow you? You can teach me all about how things work around here." It didn't take much longer for her to finish with the cow she was working on, and bring the bucket over to him. "Which cows give the lon lon milk?"

Link pointed them out. There was a handful of them now. He was still keeping their milk, though he hadn’t started his plan to make baked goods out of them. Partially because he didn’t know how to bake.

But he couldn’t shake the feeling that Zelda was trying to reassure him or make things up to him in some way. “Hey... um... does this have anything to do with Jack?”

Zelda set the bucket down. She turned to look at him, partly nervous, partly concerned. "Should this have something to do with Jack?" She asked. She hadn't only come because of how he reacted to Jack staying with her, but reassuring him was definitely part of it. The other part was a little more embarrassing, made her feel a little more shy. The feelings were strong, and a little terrifying. She really hoped she wasn’t setting herself up for disappointment.

He drew a blank, unsure what it meant that she was posing the question back to him. “I mean, I don’t know if we ever... I don’t want you to think you need to make it up to me. Or prove something.”

"The only thing I want to prove is how much I want to be with you." She said, simply. "I don't have to be here if you don't want me here," Zelda hadn't thought that her appearance in his barn first thing in the morning might be unwelcome, but now she was starting to worry that he didn't want her there.

That wasn’t it at all. Link shook his head emphatically. “No. I mean, I want you here all the time.” His cheeks turned pink. “I was just worried you were mad at me. Or you thought I was mad at you.”

“Well, I was a little worried,” Zelda confessed, shifting her weight and slipping her hands into her pockets. She was normally so much more self-assured than this. For some reason, today she felt... insecure. Unsure. Even after talking to Navi about all of this, she was still scared what his reaction was going to be. “I wasn’t mad, but I was worried about... well.” She sighed. “I just... I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you,” she confessed. It felt a little freeing and a little terrifying to say it out loud.

Link had entirely given up milking for the time being. He looked across the short space between them and swallowed. “I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you, too,” he said. His eyelids fluttered, unsure where to land for a moment. He felt nervous. “I... I’m... I’m in love with you, Zelda.”

Zelda felt her heart thundering. Funny, because it also felt like it’d dropped from her neck down into her stomach. The nerves, the excitement, the relief, then even more nerves! But happy ones? Good ones? “Oh, Link!” She said, sounding torn between thrilled and exasperated. “Really? I mean, can I just... can I say it back? Just like that? Can I just say ‘I love you, too,’ and … and you’ll believe me, won’t you? Because I mean it. Every word. All three, I guess. Why can’t I stop talking?” She asked, then laughed at herself and reached forward for him.

Link was on his feet the second it seemed like Zelda really was about to say it back. His eyes were wide. Really, he hadn’t expected it. Well, he’d hoped, but he hadn’t expected. He didn’t know what he’d expected. “Really? Like, really? Really?” It was his own version of babbling.

“Really, really!” Zelda laughed, and before she knew it, her arms were around him. She couldn’t remember hugging him, couldn’t remember bringing her lips to his neck. But there she was, glomping him, snuggling into the warm, soft skin there, one hand burying itself in his hair. “I was so nervous about telling you how I felt!” She admitted, though she was laughing with relief and excitement now. The idea that she’d been nervous moments ago was downright funny.

There was, however, that other topic lingering in the back of her mind. Maybe she should bring it up now.

He hoisted her up, so that they could kiss and look eye-to-eye. He did it in one fell motion, while she was still running towards him, because all off a sudden Link felt like he had super-strength. “I realized it a little while ago, but I couldn’t figure out how to tell you,” he said. “So it just came out now. I’m sorry it wasn’t very romantic. In a dairy barn...”

The tiny blonde’s heart was thundering, her smile bright. She was looking deep into Link’s eyes and loving everything she saw there. It felt right. Being with him felt more right than she’d ever felt before. “...don’t be silly. Everywhere is romantic when I’m with you.”

Of course, they’d forgotten about the cows. Oh, those nosey cows. One on Link’s left turned to the one next to her, and spoke. “Pay up, Bess. I told you this would happen.”

“I said it first!” Came another cow’s voice from the other side of the barn. “I knew she was the one!”

Then a third cow chimed in, “I thought I was getting milked next?”

“Okay, everybody shut up!” Link bellowed, but there was still a broad grin on his face. He looked straight and Zelda. There was no way they’d be finishing milking today. They needed to get somewhere less smelly and make out for a long time. “I’m going to make some calls and bring in some help to finish.”

Zelda was rather pink, not just in her cheeks but along her neck, too, as she looked into Link’s eyes. She nodded, eyes locked with his. Her hand found his and their fingers laced together. “I think that’s a good idea.”

It seemed the cows all agreed. They nodded and murmured their approval.

Zelda leaned up and in and stole another kiss from Link’s lips. She had enough courage now, she thought, to talk to him about the thing. “Let’s go.”

One minute, he was was running with her, hand-in-hand, back toward the house; the next, he was slamming the door. His heart furiously pumping, Link wrapped Zelda up and kissed her again, more deeply this time. He wanted to melt into her.

It was very, very hard for Zelda not to laugh like a loon. She tried her best to keep it all reigned in, to control her absolute mirth and glee at the whole situation. Link loved her. She loved him. It was perfect.

Then they were inside the house, Zelda was backed up against the closed door, then the kissing started. Kissing that was better and more powerful than any kissing they’d ever done. Kissing with reckless abandon, kissing with passion and love. Sloppy, hungry, playful, needy kisses. At least, on Zelda’s side.

Link didn’t care that they both still smelled like the barn. Maybe he should have, but he didn’t. He’d been in love once before, even made love, but he’d been all but a kid then. This was something completely different, with a totally new, stronger set of feelings. So intense. Zelda’s body felt absolutely amazing against his. He drifted a hand across her hips and clenched them. Then he moved that hand along the side of her body, feeling her ribs and finally her breast. He didn’t clutch it possessively; it was a gentlemanly caress, something tentative to test if she wanted more or less of that.

Her lips broke away from his when she felt his hand move to a very sensitive area. She inhaled sharply at it, though she wasn’t pulling away. It felt good, and she wanted to have his hands all over her. Touching every part--a very strange feeling. New. Wonderful, but different.

“Link,” she breathed, finally opening her eyes to look into his. “...I... do you... can we go sit?” She asked, her nerve faltering.

Okay, so... less of that. Link’s eyes were wide with something like horror, convinced he’d just done something incredibly stupid. It’s just that they’d gotten so passionate so quickly. Maybe it was his lack of experience. It was totally possible that he’d misread the signals. “I’m really sorry,” he said, still standing rigid by the door.

“No,” Zelda said, shaking her head. She hadn’t wanted him to stop. Not really. And the way he went rigid sort of brought her back to her senses. “You make my knees weak and my head swim, I...” She swallowed. “Can we talk for a minute?”

Link nodded. How had everything hit a wall so quickly? His face had gone from red to pale, but he followed Zelda into the next room. They could sit on the sofa in there.

Zelda took hold of his hand and didn’t let go until they were sitting on the sofa. She swallowed once more. The blush that had cleared off of his cheeks found a home on her own. “...I’ve never... I mean, I had sex once. This one time, in high school. He was a jerk, and blabbed about it all over. As if it was a selling point, or something. It made me feel dirty. Used. It wasn’t a good time. I didn’t love him, really, we’d just been going out for a while. And I didn’t want to do it ever again.” She spoke quickly, almost under her breath, as if admitting something embarrassing or shameful.

“...Kol beat him up so bad he ended up in the hospital.” She said, finally lifting her eyes to Link’s face again. “I just... haven’t had any interest since. So...” Long story short, “I don’t know what I’m doing. But Navi said I should just … tell you.” Girls talk about this sort of thing. Surely Link knew that? “I should just tell you that... I think we should... I want to have sex. With you.” She sounded hopeful. It was nearly a question, the way her tone went up at the end of the sentence.

Link scratched the back of his head, taking in Zelda’s really unfortunate story and the fact that she’d talked things over with Navi. Recently, he assumed. And then Zelda said she wanted to have sex with him, and Link was sort of thrown all over again. It was a lot to process, and Link was a slow thinker.

“That really sucks, what happened, in high school.” He wasn’t sure who Kol was, but Link probably would have beaten the guy up, too. He kind of wanted to, now. “But you and I, we don’t ever have to do anything you’re not comfortable with. I mean, I would still love you, even if we never did anything.”

“I haven’t ever wanted to.” Zelda said. Maybe she hadn’t been explaining herself well. “I mean, I’ve gone on dates, I’ve... y’know... I’ve kissed a boy or two.” Not that many, but still. “I’ve just never wanted to have sex with anyone. Not until you.” She felt really shy saying it, but it was true. “Maybe because I love you.”

She moved closer to him on the sofa. “I just... I have no idea what I’m doing. And things like Cosmopolitan magazine really don’t help.”

About Cosmo, Link couldn’t really say anything. He’d seen it at the market, but he had no idea what was inside. So, he blinked at her again, and at the way she was moving closer. Was she suggesting they have sex now? After that shock, Link was pretty sure it would take him hours before he could work up another... er, ahem

He cleared his throat for real. “I love you, too,” he said. His voice squeaked a bit. “And I want to, um, express it, um, physically. But wouldn’t you like something more romantic than this?”

“Oh. Yes. Um, no, I mean... I smell like cow.” Zelda said, giving a shy laugh. Nervous laugh. She shrugged her shoulders. “I just want you to know that... that that’s what I want. You know, eventually, if that’s what you want, too.” She figured it was. She figured they were on the same page now, that they both felt the same way.

“But um...” She went rather pink. “We could do more kissing now. If you want to.”

Link chuckled shyly and nodded. Yes, it was what he wanted. And he wanted to make sure when it did happen, that Zelda could forget all the bad memories from before and put them far behind her.

He inched closer, lifting his arms to hold her again. He moved them toward her hips, wavered there and then moved them toward her shoulders. Hm. “How about... you put my hands exactly where you want them.”

Zelda went very, very pink. She grinned, nodded, and reached around to wrap his arms tightly around her, placing them both as close to her spine as she could--just in the middle of her back. Her own arms wrapped up and around him, her hands meeting behind his head. “Is this okay?”

She loved how much of a gentleman he was. She loved how he wanted her to feel comfortable. This was going to be a wonderful ride. She couldn’t wait to get started.
