Merlin and Audrey were in their PJ’s snuggled together on the sofa watching some romantic comedy movie. They’d had a lovely dinner and bath and were now contentedly lounging around before heading to bed.
It had been a pretty uneventful day, unusual but welcome in the OC, but Merlin couldn’t think of a better end to it.
Audrey loved bathing with Merlin. She loved that they were comfortable enough with each other now that they could splash the water out of the tub if they wanted to, laugh in a tangle of arms and legs, and make each other come several times before they finished in the bathroom. By the time the bath was over, she was already satiated. Then pajamas, cuddling hot cocoa (with marshmallows) and a romantic comedy? The night was absolutely perfect.
She sighed as she cuddled against him, making sure not to spill her hot cup into his lap. That would ruin a perfectly wonderful evening. But something had been hanging around in the back of her mind, and she decided to bring it up.
“...I want to have a baby.” She blurted out. Okay, maybe she should have worked her way up to it.
To say Merlin was surprised at this statement would be putting it lightly. Less so the subject matter and more the abruptness of it. Popping his hot chocolate down on the coffee table he looked at Audrey, "Okay" he started, "Like right now?" he asked not entirely sure what he was supposed to say to that.
“No.” Audrey said, sitting up a little. Now she was amused. She really hadn’t meant to say it like that, but... well, his reaction was funny. “Not right this second... but I want to have one eventually. I want to get married, have a house, have a kid, have a dog, all of that. I just realized we never talked about it before.”
Oh, Merlin thought, they were going to have that talk, right he could do this. He took Audreys free hand to twine their fingers together. "You want all that with me?" Merlin asked, almost shyly if he could do shy with Audrey, he was too relaxed around her for that anymore in truth.
"I don't know," Audrey answered truthfully. "Can I see it all happening with you? Yes. But I only want it with you if you do."
"I can see it too" he told her after a moment of imagining, "And I very much want it. And I want you. Forever"
Audrey felt her insides twist in the best way. She leaned up and in and stole a kiss against his lips. “Forever sounds good to me.” She sat up, though, relatively abruptly. “...I’m... I just want to make sure we’re on the same page, you know. It sounds fun, but... well, it would be more than just playing house, right? I mean... marriage, house, kids, all of that. Takes work. So I’ve heard.”
“It would be hard work at times but it would be fun too” Merlin replied, taking her hands in his, “No playing house, I’m serious Audrey about you and about our future together”
“I love you,” Audrey said, closing her eyes and letting him play with her fingers. “...and I want you forever. But... well, we need to both be sure we’re ready for that. I’m thinking... five years from now, ten, twenty. Not just next week.” Beat. “You know, I didn’t really realize I was ready for forever until you came along.”
“I love you too” Merlin told her, “And I know I will forever, even when we’re old and wrinkly and losing our marbles” he teased lightly, “I’d never though about marriage or kids properly before but being with you I know I want it all now, with you”
"Okay. Now that you know what I want, you can... you know... get the ball rolling." She was only partly teasing. "It's the man's job, you know, to propose and what not."
“Well now I know that you’re with me and my train of thought I can start planning” he teased back, he too only slightly joking. “It’s going to be more romantic than sitting on the sofa watching a film”
"Okay." That was actually pretty exciting. Audrey blushed a little, nodding. "What do you think time-wise? I'm not getting any younger. If we want more than one child, we need to get started." She'd heard horror stories of women having babies later in life, birth defects and old eggs... it sounded awful.
Merlin was already beginning to plan the proposal in his head, it was definitely something which was going to require a lot of thought. “I’d have kids with you tomorrow” Merlin told her giving her a squeeze, “But maybe we should start trying once we find a house? I mean we’ll need a room for the baby before it’s born right?” he suggested.
It really was like a fairy tale. Audrey was feeling better about it all, less afraid and more thrilled. They were moving fast, but talking about it made her feel much more confident. They were on the same page, both excited, both very much in love.
"I'll start looking for a realtor. I'll talk to Nina. We should still rent her a room if she wants to live with us. She's very fond of you, y'know. She told me so."
Merlin had no worries about moving fast really, he knew Audrey was the one and was happy to show the world how he felt about her.
"Fine by me" Merlin nodded, "I like her too and you know added bonus of having a nurse around" he grinned teasingly.
“She’s pretty fantastic.” Audrey said both grinning and nodding. “So, we’ll start looking for a four bedroom place. With the extra income from rent we should be able to make mortgage payments pretty easily.” She thought aloud. “I’ll have to start looking into what we can afford. What do you think about speaking with a mortgage lender together some day?”
Merlin nodded, "How's this area school wise?" he asked, "I mean its really kind of perfect for both our places of work" Although he was thinking he maybe should bite the bullet and learn to drive. "Sounds like a good idea to me. Be good to know what ballpark prices we can be looking at"
“I don’t know. The more houses cost, the better the schools, right?” Audrey asked, leaning her head back against his shoulder for a moment. “I’m sure we can do fairly well for ourselves. Well, you more than me. So much of my money is tied up in that bakery. If it goes down, I’d go down with it.” She frowned a bit. She hadn’t really thought of it that way before, but... well, it was true.
"I think so" Merlin wasn't sure he just knew his mum had always asked about schools when someone was buying. "That's never going to happen" he assured her, "People love you and your baked goods" he hugged her closer with a grin. "But we should be fine. I find out about that promotion soon and I have savings back in the UK. I know its hard to believe but I wasn't really the spending spree sort" he chuckled, "More like save for a rainy day or for a house with the person I love which was a better plan I think"
“I think so, too.” Audrey agreed. She was blushing from when he said people loved her and her baked goods. It was nice to hear. Her head nestled perfectly against his shoulder, she closed her eyes and sighed. “House. Kids. When did we become grown-ups?” She asked, playfully. It was so fast, but felt so right.
Merlin would tell her everyday if she wanted, it was the truth after all. Everybody loved Audrey, she was just that kind of person. He laughed a little, "If you ask my mum she would say I've always been a grown up" he told her, "But yeah this is the serious stuff. I'm looking forward to it quite a lot" he admitted. Sure there were nerves but there was excitement too and that was definitely outweighing it at the moment.
"Oh, definitely not me," Audrey said, beaming. "I was a Peter Pan type. But I can't wait for the future. That's how you know you got it right, right? When you can't wait for the happily ever after?"
Merlin grinned, “We’ve definitely got it right. Our happily ever after is going to be great” he told her tilting her face to his gently to kiss her lips.
Audrey kissed him back, happily and lovingly.
