Billy headed to the doctor’s office, and sighed as he did so. No sooner had he told the nurse that he felt fine than he had started developing a rash. And in a very embarrassing place. He shook his head. Served him right to open his mouth like that. But he trusted her and the doctor to be professionals, and so he was off that next day to see them.
He arrived in the main office, and was eventually shown back to the examination room by an orderly, where he dressed in an examination gown thing. And waited, his cheeks pink.
The pink cheeks were noted as Yuna stepped into the room. She was wearing her favorite set of scrubs that day, a colorful burst of flowers on the top with a solid bottom. She thought it put others at ease to wear softer things and in fun patterns, and was glad she had the freedom to do so.
"Billy, right?" She asked, while checking over her clipboard, "I met you on the network, didn't I? I'm nurse Lee. You can call me Yuna if you like."
“That’s me, ma’am.” He smiled to her, even if he was flushed. “Yes. That was me. Turns out, by sundown I did need to come in anyway, like I told the charge nurse.” He blushed more. “Ah, so, yeah. Thanks, Yuna.”
"You seem kind of nervous, it's okay to be nervous, but I promise you no one here's going to try to hurt you or embarrass you." She continued to smile as she got out one of the thermometers and popped it into a sanitary sleeve, "Let's just get your vitals to start, alright? I need your temperature so let's get this out of the way first."
“I know. And thanks. Just embarrassing, really.” He nodded as he opened his mouth, and accepted the thermometer. He felt nervous, but mostly just embarrassed, because it seemed so silly.
If Yuna had absorbed anything, it was that things seemed silly to people, but sometimes there was a real medical concern there. It was never silly to come in to see a doctor, no matter what was going on.
She clipped a little monitor onto his index finger too, and jotted various things down while waiting for the thermometer to beep, "I always hated having my temperature taken growing up. The sanitizer we use, it makes my mouth sting, you know. And it's hard to sit there and stare at the walls or at this nurse you're not very familiar with... there. All done with that."
Yuna drew the thermometer out and tossed the sleeve in a biohazard bin.
Billy chuckled, and sighed now that he could. “It is odd to sit there like that. Makes the brain wander to odd places. “ He smiled to her. “How’s it look, nurse?”
He was terrible at forgetting to call people their names instead of titles. A thing caused by his raising by not strict but firm parents.
"97.9, which is actually a bit lower than normal, but I think we'll take it," She replied, with a chuckle. His heart rate was high, but she thought that might have to do with whatever problem had cropped up that had him so embarrassed, "Your heart is racing a bit but your blood oxygen level is very good. And now I'm going to take your blood pressure, but I think you probably have nothing to worry about."
“Okay, good.” Billy chuckled and nodded. “Probably.” He smiled at her as he listened. “You’re the boss, just tell me what to do.” He tended to listen to authority, and it didn’t hurt that she was pretty, smart, and confident, or seemed so.
"I just need you to hold your arm steady," Yuna said, grinning more widely than before. She'd always been pretty good at building up a rapport with younger people. She quickly took care of his blood pressure and other vitals, then took a seat across from him.
"Now that that's out of the way, why don't you tell me what you're so worried about?"
Billy nodded and cooperated, grinning, then settled and blushed more. “Well, not worried so much, as... less than an hour after talking to you, a rash started coming in and it’s all across my groin. It started as a small spot, but is now everywhere down there.” He was red now.
"Oh, I can see why that would definitely be a little embarrassing," Yuna replied, nodding her head. She jotted down some notes, "I'll need to ask you some questions, I'm sorry. Just try to answer them as best you can. Do you know if your laundry detergent has changed, or any of the soap products in your house?"
Yuna lifted various papers in his file, looking to see if there'd been something like this before in his history, "What were you doing the day the rash started? Did you have anything new to eat or take medicine you don't, normally?"
He’d never had anything like this before. “I don’t think so, but I did do a lot of laundry and different shopping during being in the other body, so, maybe?” He wasn’t sure, now that he thought about it.
Billy shook his head. “It was the first day I was back in my body and I ate steak, and drank chocolate milk, but those are normal for me. And headache medicine, but again, normal.” He was unsure, really.
"Oh, is it possible that you bought some new clothes for the new body that you wore without washing first?" Yuna took a few more notes. They were approaching the point where the rash would need to be looked at, but she'd want to call Magius in. It was generally a good idea to have a third party around (which would be her role) when dealing with minors and things of this nature.
Billy nodded. “I did, in fact, a number of sets. A couple of different kinds, for that body, really.” He blinked. “Would that have crossed over somehow?”
"Well, it's possible that, for instance, if you'd bought yourself new underwear... There might have been a dye or a chemical that it was treated with that irritated your skin, and it might have carried over when you changed back. I wouldn't want to rule it out, anyway."
Yuna nodded her head and jotted a few more things down, "Does it itch? You haven't been scratching it, I hope."
“I did, and didn’t think of it, and argh, yes it itches.” He shivered, pressing his hands down on the exam bed. “Yes, ma’am, it itches a lot, and I have almost never scratched it.” Billy squirmed a little, because talking about it was making it more itchy.
"It's good that you aren't scratching it. That would really only irritate it more, and might make it spread to other places. I'm sure you don't want that!" Yuna declared.
She hopped up off of her stool and tucked her pen into her pocket, "We're going to have to take a look at it, of course. I'll need to get the doctor for that, but I'll be in the room."
Yuna pointed to the place in the room she'd be standing to observe, "Standing right there unless he needs something. I'm sure it's something simple that we can easily fix up for you. Stay put for a bit, alright?"
Billy nodded and smiled to her, confident everything would be okay. “Alright. Thanks!” He would just hang out and try not to worry. He knew Doc Magius of course, as the man had delivered him. And, well, the nurse was a nurse and he could trust her, so, what was one more person seeing his bits? He smiled and nodded, resigned.
With another quick nod, Yuna stepped out of the room and went to find Magius, "Doctor, we're ready for you in Exam B now. I've got the chart right here for you."
Magius nodded and followed her back toward him. “Did you make the initial examination? What is he complaining of?” He was gaining confidence in, and respect for, her abilities.
"I checked his vitals, they're all within the normal range. He's complaining of a rash that started in on his groin and has quickly spread. It itches, but he hasn't been scratching it," Yuna didn't need to consult the clipboard to continue, "He has no drug or food allergies and nothing new was introduced as far as detergents, foods, or medications goes. I think it may be a contact rash from some irritant on something new he wore when he was in a larger body recently."
She blushed a bit, "He is very embarrassed of course, and I didn't want to physically examine the area without a third party present."
“Very well.” He paused before the door, dropping his voice. “YOu could have, you know? IN clinical practice, male and female cross examinations happen all the time, as long as the patient is willing and comfortable.” Then, nodding to her, he headed into the room. He smiled as he saw Billy and extended his hand.
“Billy. Good to see you!”
“Doc! Hi!” Billy smiled at the doctor and nodded to him. “You too.”
Magius pulled on a pair of gloves and pulled up a stool to sit before where Billy was sitting. “Now, why don’t you let me take a look, and see what we are dealing with here. “
Billy nodded, flushing, and then shifted and drew the bottom of the examination gown up, shifting so his legs were parted more. The rash was a reddish color, and splotchy, with many spots, and spread from the inner thighs, around the ballsack, on part of the penis, and just a little down both legs, and up to the belly some.
Magius nodded as he glanced at Yuna, suspicions that she was right forming right away. It looked exactly like what she had supposed, a contact allergic reaction to a new detergent or clothing item triggered in the area where young men most sweated and got most hot.
Yuna made quiet note of everything - including the Doctor's words before he'd stepped into the room, and nodded her head at Magius when he glanced over at her, "It looks like a case of contact dermatitis... basically your skin is reacting to contact with something that's irritating it. Probably a harsh detergent that your new underwear was laundered with before you put it on... A wash with your own laundry detergent might have prevented it, but it's difficult to know when these things will come up. It's always good practice to wash any new clothing before wearing it. Bedding, too."
Billy blushed, but listened. Magius nodded and checked the area closely, then smiled. “Nurse Lee is most likely right. Check your detergents and clothing and wash them in detergent you know and have used before. I’ll send home some cream to apply to help heal this faster, rather than slower, as well, and take two showers a day, then pat the area dry.” He paused. “If it is not healed within three days, or mostly so, call in and we will see what else could have caused it.”
Billy nodded, smiling wider. and lowered his gown. “I can do that. Thank you.”
Magius smiled. “No problem, Billy. And thank you for being brave enough to come in. Some men never do and conditions started as simple things grow worse. Better to face the music, so to speak, early.”
"I agree, it was very brave of you. But it would have been even more embarrassing had it gotten worse. So it's good that you came in when you did," Yuna added. She was glad that she'd fit him into the schedule now.
The cream he was mentioning was one they had plenty of on hand, "I'll get you some of that cream right now, it's small enough you can easily fit it in your pockets or a backpack."
She nodded at Magius and quickly stepped out and over to the pharmacy cabinet.
Magius smiled as she stepped out. Then he focused on Billy. “Go ahead and get dressed, if you wish, and I’ll make sure the paperwork is ready for you to sign and take with you when you have the medicine.”
“Thanks, doc. And thanks for being here.”
“You’re welcome, Billy.” He patted the boy’s shoulder and headed out, passing Yuna. “I’ll get the paperwork started. He’s dressing and will be right out. Will you bring him to the charge desk?”
Billy started dressing quickly, smiling, hopeful the doctors could get this right.
"Of course. Thank you, Doctor." Yuna smiled warmly at Magius, then went to wait by the exam room for Billy to come out. When he did, she waved and held up the tube of cream, "After you wash and pat dry, apply a thin coating of this to the affected areas. A little bit goes a very long way, so take care with it. I suggest applying it with a cotton ball or q-tip."
She placed the tube in his hand and started leading him to the charge desk.
Billy blushed and nodded to her, taking the tube, and smiled. “Thanks, Nurse Lee.” Magius had his paperwork ready by the time they got there, and he handed over several forms. “This will let you know exactly how to do it and possible side effects. If you feel anything, or need to talk, go ahead and call in, okay?”
“Thanks, Doc, I will.”
Magius watched Billy go, then turned to Yuna and nodded. “That went well.”
Yuna nodded, "I think so, yes. Poor boy, he must be so uncomfortable. I really hope things go better for him."
“Me too. Well done with him, by the way. He relaxed a lot under your words and actions.” He nodded and then headed to wash his hands again and check the docket for who was next.
