Laura sighed as she trudged back to their apartment. They’d rented the place for a month just to have something to settle into when they got to New York, and it sucked. She was distinctly reminded of the crappy apartments she’d rented as a hooker, and that wasn’t a great comparison. She had dog food and groceries, and the sound of Ginger barking as she got to the door made her smile. At least she still had some of the people she loved.
“Hey, Hotness,” She said as she stepped in.
It wasn’t that bad of an apartment, but for what they were spending it was a little on the ridiculous side. Even with the money Jubilee had saved up, she wasn’t sure it could be something long term. How did people live like this?
She looked up from her computer and then bounded alongside Ginger. “You’re home!”
Laura put the groceries down and hugged Jubilee. “Yay!” She wondered if they would actually do what they talked about on the phone.
“I L U.” She kissed her and hugged her and groped a little. “Whatcha get? I was gonna go out and get things but then Ginger wanted a walk and we got back and we were pooped so we were chillin’ in front of the tv!”
“I don’t blame you. It’s so wet outside.” Laura made a face, then grabbed the groceries and began packing them into the fridge. “Uh, sandwich stuff, eggs, pancake mix, veggies, candy.” She reported what each item was before she put them in the fridge.
“We picked a bad time of year, yo!” Jubilee bounced over to help put things away. She loved being able to eat again. She couldn’t take as much punishment anymore, but it was an acceptable trade off.
Laura let her help out, sighing softly. “How many months did we pay on this place?” She was already tired of the East Coast.
“First an’ last,” Jubilee said. She looked a little... sad. “Maybe we jumped before we looked, chica...but...I think we needed to.”
“I think so too.” Laura chucked the empty bags and hugged Jubilee close. “If only to show us what’s important.”
“Each other an’ our friends. I really miss our friends...” Jubilee leaned her head on Laura’s shoulder.
Laura held her tight. “It’s stupid to stay here just ‘cause we paid for it.” She was already homesick, and there wasn’t much in New York she liked enough to make up for it.
“Not a big loss. Do you really wanna go back? because I kinda wanna go back but I don’t wanna disappoint you or anything I know you had your heart set on this.”
“I thought it would be best.” Laura said with a sigh. “I don’t know. I feel stupid for dragging us out here.” She sat on one of the boxes they hadn’t unpacked yet.
“Why? We learned shit!” Jubilee sat on the ground in front of her.
“Yeah, but it was stuff we should have already known. I shouldn’a left Orange County after finally having some good people around me.” She poked at the floor with the tip of her shoe.
“Hey..” Jubilee turned Laura’s face towards her. “Okay so we messed up. It happens. Why don’t we just cut our losses and go to our real home.”
Laura met her eyes and nodded. “Yeah. Screw New York.”
“So..fly home tomorrow and just have this crap shipped back?” Jubilee tilted her head. “We really could do that farm thing.”
Laura nodded. “I talked to the guy with the orchard, he said it’s a lot of work. He said we could live with him if we promised to work hard, and we’ll learn a lot about farming from him. I bet we could keep goats, too.”
“...I dunno. I kinda wanted to live on our own still...” That was the one thing Jubilee liked best. She missed Cass, sure, but when it was just her and Laura it felt like they were taking on the world. “But maybe work on the farm with him?”
“We’d have our own house, he said. With two of us working we should get a little bit of money on top of it to live off of, and we can still have sexy video stuff help us out.”
Jubilee nodded her head. “Yeah, that’ll help out!” She suspected just getting set up with farming would bankrupt her savings, but it would be so worth it.
Laura nodded. “That way we can really look around for the best farm when we know enough stuff.” She squeezed Jubilee’s hands. “I don’t want to waste any more of your money, Hotness. I’ll let him know we’ll take the job if he wants to hire us.”
“It’s not a waste if it..helps us figure out our lives!” She hugged Laura. “And I don’t wanna rely on it anyway.”
She nodded, hugging Jubilee tight. “I’ll let him know. We’ll get stuff started tomorrow.” She didn’t want to wait, but they’d never get things shipped this late at night.
“Yeah, then we can drive home, I don’t wanna lose my car.” Jubilee grinned. And road trips were fun!
Laura nodded. “Yep! We’ll have fun! We should plan a new route to see some stuff on the way.” It was okay if their stuff got there before they did.
It would be an ADVENTURE!
