“Look, it’s simple.” The cat explained as he butted his head into Emma’s leg. “You open the container, pour out my food, and I stop bothering you. No big deal.”
Emma sighed, reaching down to shoo the cat away. “Shouldn’t you be off licking yourself?” She just wanted to relax with Scott after a long day at work, and the cats were not interested in letting them do that.
Scott kept any amused comments to himself. He’d just been pelted with curses and nuts by Doom the Squirrel, and it was refreshing watching someone else deal with the cats. He might have snerked a little.
Emma elbowed him, lightly. “Why did Nate send you three back, anyway?” She’d hoped they’d be amused by Greymalkin, whatever that actually was.
“No litter box.” The cat at her side noted. “And no mice, no toys. Just him and another woman.” This cat was the least annoying of the group. Emma patted his (her?) head.
“Cats are civilized creatures,” Scott noted. “Unlike squirrels.” He smiled wryly. “Still not the weirdest week I’ve ever seen.”
“Me either. This would have been nice when you were in the coma, actually.” She rubbed the cat at her side, resting her head on his shoulder. “Did you have a run in with a squirrel?”
“Yeah, Dani’s old pet. I thought he ran away, turns out he’s taken up residence on a tree on the property.” Scott kissed the side of her face.
“Oh, I didn’t know she had a squirrel.” She snuggled into him a little more. “What happened? Was it mean to you? Should I ask our feline minions to eat him?”
The cats all reacted with surprise. They also decided to be in another room, before Emma decided to make them fight the squirrel for their supper.
“I think he’s planning to overthrow them or something,” Scott replied.
Emma laughed a little. “I’ll have to keep that in mind.” She stroked his face softly. “So, what do you think about Nate’s new toy?”
“I’m jealous.” Scott only sounded half serious.
Emma laughed. “Oooh, I’m sure he’ll share with you, love.” She kissed the underside of his chin. “Besides, it gets him out of the house more.”
“Which means we have to fend for ourselves,” Scott pointed out.
“It also means we can have sex on the couch again. We did okay before he moved in.” She smiled warmly at him.
“There is that...” Scott grinned, looking at the bright side of things.
Emma smirked, undoing the buttons on Scott’s shirt. “Mmm, I’m a little heavier now, think you’ll still be okay with me on top?” She winked at him.
“You? Heavy?” Scott shook his head. “I’ll always love you being on top, Emma.”
She smirked and pressed him down on the couch, tugging his shirt out of his pants. “I’m sure you will.”
Scott’s hands somehow got most of Emma’s clothing off in the time it took her to get his shirt off. He was efficient that way.
Emma laughed and set to the very enjoyable work of helping Scott relax after a long day of work. It was a rough, hard task, but one she thoroughly enjoyed. So much so, in fact, that she didn’t hear the door knob make a noise when a key was put into it.
Dani was just glad that the house was still standing and her key still fit in the lock. She hadn't really known what to expect. Where was her dog? Why weren't the cats at the window glaring at her angrily?
She didn't really think to take notice of the extra cars in the driveway or whatever. Scott had been free to get roommates when she left. But she wasn't at all expecting the scene she walked into when she opened the door and headed in.
"... Nice tits, random woman."
Emma gasped, staring at Dani. “Who the hell are you?” She stood up, carefully maneuvering off the couch. She didn’t try to cover herself, she was ready to kick Dani out.
That wasn't at all a voice Scott had expected to hear again. He never had changed the locks. He looked over Emma, a little in shock. "Dani?" He grabbed Emma's arm. "That's Mirage, Emma."
"... Emma? Oh, hell." Dani wrinkled her nose and put both of her hands up, "Alright, well, you two have fun. I'm just going to go make some coffee, assuming it's still in the same place."
Oh fuck. Emma facepalmed. “Welcome home.” She wondered whether things would be awkward or very awkward, now.
“Keurig hasn’t moved,” Scott said, pulling his pants back up. He had a million questions. Like where the hell Dani went and why she’d come back now. Things had moved so far from the way they’d been before she left that it was completely new territory. Emma was pregnant..he and Nate and Neena had lived an entire life in the future, and then all the other crap OC threw at them.
"What the hell is this keurig shit, you leave for 8 months and the whole world changes," she grumbled to herself as she headed into the kitchen. Scott was screwing Emma on her couch, the kitchen had a lot of new things in it...
In response to the 'welcome home' from Emma, she shouted over her shoulder, "I won't be here long, I was just looking for a few things I'd left behind."
Emma sighed, pushing her hair back from her face. “Fuck fuck fuck.” She was acutely aware of the fact that Dani owned the place. She’d just. . . forgotten since moving in.
For that matter, so had Scott. He put a calming hand on Emma's arm. "You don't have to take off again." He'd prefer it if she didn't.
There came the pitter patter of little feet, and then three pairs of eyes were staring at Dani.
Then the big orange tabby said, "One of those things better be us, food lady."
"Don't know her, who is she, oh my god I'm so pissed at her!" The Siamese complained.
The black one said nothing, just glared.
Dani blinked at the three cats, then stared a bit, then blinked again. They were speaking to her, which wasn't completely abnormal, she could usually pick up on their thoughts and emotions, but this was entirely different.
Really, really weird different, "Uhm. Not that you should at all be alarmed by this. But is anyone else hearing the cats talk?"
“Yes, please tell me you’re taking them.” Emma replied as she tugged her skirt back on. “They’ve been nothing but annoying since they started talking.”
"You've been annoyed with them since you moved in," Scott pointed out, buttoning his shirt up. "Doom was cursing me out earlier."
How the hell did this machine even work? Dani looked at it, then back at the cats, "Look guys, it's a long story. A really long one. But you can't come with me right now, so stop glaring at me like that Eagle. And I think Proudstar's been overfed. Why hasn't Doom been running you boys around more?"
Not talking to Scott and Emma sounded like a great idea right now. It wasn't like she could fix herself a drink to brain bleach that image out of her head.
Well, that was just too bad. Emma went into the kitchen to get the Keurig working. Super awkward seemed to be winning, which was no big surprise. Of course, she didn’t really have anything to say, so talking could still be avoided.
The cats exchanged a look. Proudstar bounded over and nearly tripped up Dani, rubbing against her. The other cats seemed more cautious. Scott followed Emma into the kitchen. "I thought Doom took off, but he's taken over a tree nearby."
"I didn't mean to interrupt you guys. You could get back to what you were doing, really." Dani snerked and picked Proudstar up, ruffling his ears with her fingers. It was a familiar part of an old life that was increasingly less familiar. She told herself not to start balling like a child in front of Emma fucking Frost, and bit her lip.
“Of course we can’t.” Emma said with a shrug. “It was going to happen eventually, and now it has. We need to deal with this like adults, and the sooner the better.” She got the coffee going, then put on the kettle for tea for herself.
“..I’m ordering take out,” Scott said, picking up his phone and moving to the fridge to grab one of the menus. They practically knew their order by heart - even though they’d tried to learn cooking and Nate did a lot of it, they still ordered out almost daily.
Scott maybe missed fajitas.
Dani put Proudstar down, and held her hands up, "Look, I'm serious. I'm not here to stay for long. I thought I'd grab a quick cup of coffee, grab my stuff, and be out of your hair."
If she stayed for much longer she'd have to talk about it, and she didn't want to talk about it. She wanted to have that talk with Wrex first.
“So what, you’re going to walk away from a two story house in the nicest part of Orange County and let us live here rent free?” Emma shook her head. The idea was absurd. “We can have a room ready for you before dark.” It just happened to be a very bright white room with yellow duckies on the wallpaper.
The duckies were Scott’s idea. He nodded his head. “Yeah, it’s not exactly a huge inconvenience.”
"No." Dani shook her head. This was the stupidest idea she'd ever had. She wanted to backpedal but the counter was behind her and there was really nowhere to run, "You guys have lived here for 8 months rent free, so... It shouldn't be an issue if that continues. Right? Good. Is my stuff in the basement? I'll just go ... get that."
Emma facepalmed, but she backed off. “No, it’s not okay, but we don’t have to talk about it right now. Your stuff is indeed in the basement.” It wouldn’t do any good to scare her off.
“Dani, we’re going to talk. It doesn’t have to be today, but it should be tomorrow,” Scott said, trying to keep the dad tone out of his voice.
"Well you'll have to fight with the Kroger over who gets to be the stern dad with me this week," Dani replied, calmly. She hated the dad voice and his tone was very much Dad Voice Lite. Even if he was trying not to sound that way.
She glanced at Emma and nodded at her, "Thanks for the coffee."
It might be the fact that they’d been interrupted, but Scott’s dad voice was doing all kinds of lovely things to Emma’s hormones right then. “You’re welcome. Scott, would you mind helping her with her things?” She couldn’t do heavy lifting herself, unless she wanted to cart things around in her diamond form, which she didn’t.
Scott folded his arms and smirked a little. "Talk to Wrex tonight, and talk to me tomorrow. You'll want to go to the ranch for Ho'nene anyway."
"I'm going to kind of have to talk to Wrex tonight, yeah," Dani agreed. She snagged her coffee mug and took a very long sip off of it, then set it aside and headed for the basement, "I can get my own things. I'll let myself out, too, so if you guys want to head upstairs and screw like rabbits, you know, go right ahead."
Emma rolled her eyes. “You’re stubborn as hell, but there’s no need for that. Scott will help you pack, then we’ll get back to what we were doing, and we’ll have lunch tomorrow.”
“We can all meet somewhere,” he added. “Maybe that cafe we found. Good food, relaxing atmosphere, kind of private.”
The one she'd nearly sobbed in with Obi. God no. She hugged herself, and took a deep breath. This had been her choice and she needed to stop being such a fucking pussy about it, "Alright. Fine. I'm sorry, I should have called first I guess."
“Well, now you know.” The kettle whistled and Emma made herself a cup of tea. This day was just far too much.
Scott thought that tomorrow wasn’t going to be much better.
