On a normal day, Parker was not a social creature. She preferred to stay in the background, quiet and quick, fast and light. But she'd been in a weird mood and there had been an invite for free food, and the last time she'd gotten food with people, it had ended in her having a sort of friend, and she sort of liked that. As much as she heard Archie's voice in her head ("Don't make friends, Parker. They'll just slow you down. Fast, light. That'll keep you alive."), the temptation to at least try to connect with someone was overwhelming. Maybe it had something to do with the dreams.
They'd been haunting her for almost two weeks now. Same two dreams almost every night. In the first, she was much like she was now: independent, greedy, concerned with money and survival more than anything. Selfish. And she was working with a team of people that were supposed to be the best in the business, all run by one guy who apparently wasn't a thief but an insurance investigator. It was a strange situation, but what was stranger was that the dream seemed to have a sequel, this time with Archie. She'd gotten herself stuck in an unbreakable system to try and save him and had been rescued by her team, the people she thought of as family. Then there was a whole thing with a food plague and helping people and all in all, it was just strange and had thrown Parker well off her game.
So she hadn't come to Dani's with the intention to steal. In fact, she hadn't even slipped into the bedroom with the intention to steal. She'd honestly just been lost and looking for the bathroom, but when she saw those silver and turquoise earrings, she stopped dead in her search. They were awfully pretty, and her fingers itched to slip the shiny things into her pockets and walk out. It'd be so easy, like taking candy from a baby.
So why was she hesitating?
