Vanyel finished up with the last of the paperwork he'd had to get through for the day, popped the papers on famous musicians he still had to grade for his appreciation class into his messenger bag, slung his guitar over his shoulder and headed out, past the school. He had some time before he needed to be back there for a meeting, and luckily, it wasn't far from any of the decent shops or food places so he could make up for the lunch he hadn't had time to grab today.
Meetra had stopped for lunch after her purchase at Jack's pawn shop. Her purchase had been an old rapier that had felt balanced perfectly for her. She was admiring the handle as she ate.
Vanyel slipped in, placed an order at the counter, and was on his way to fill up his drink cup when the rapier caught his eye for some reason. He couldn't explain it. It wasn't like he'd ever fenced a day in his life, but something about it looked, well, familiar. "Nice sword." he said, smiling as he passed by, so she didn't think he was some kind of...sword pervert or something.
"Thank you. It's a couple hundred years old, but still in good conditions." She kept it in the sheathe, which was fairly simple.
"Looks it." Vanyel agreed, grinning. "Not that I know much about them in general, but nice find." Not that he knew what he was talking about, obviously.
"Complete random find," She admitted, with a slight flush.
"Well, I might have to go looking for my own finds sometimes." he observed, leaning back a little near the counter while he waited.
"I'm Meetra." She decided she ought to actually..talk to people more often.
"Vanyel." He offered a hand to shake. He should do that whole talking to real people and not teenagers thing at some point too.
"Are you a musician?" she noted his guitar. Then realized that 'duh he was' that was a stupid question.
"Well, I teach it, and I play a little." Vanyel grinned at that. "Not really a musician so much since I'm not on anyone's radio or cd's yet. But I like it."
"If you play, you're a musician." She smiled at him, "You can..sit here if you want."
"I'd like that." Vanyel grabbed one of the chairs, edged his stuff into another and gave her a little nod. "Makes me feel like less of a loser too."
"For eating alone?" Meetra shook her head, "You're nore a loser for eating alone."
"Well, some people aren't." Vanyel eyedarted. "I sort of tend to look like one when I do most social things so." He shook his head a bit. "better to be careful, you know."
"That's silly."
"Well, you know what the kids say about you sitting alone in the cafeteria don't you?" Vanyel asked her with wide, deliberately innocent eyes.
Meetra tilted her head, then darted her eyes, "Lets not talk about high school."
"Good idea." Vanyel agreed, shaking his head to clear the images. "This isn't Mean Girls after all. So, we've established I do music. What do you do?"
She tapped the sword, "I fence."
"Very cool then." Vanyel smiled. "Must be impressive, actually. I've never been all that athletic so..." He shrugged. "It's cool when other people are.'
She smiled. She wasn't one to brag, so she didn't tell him of the championships she'd won, "Music is impressive in it's own right."
"Well, I love it, and you must love yours so..." He nodded a little. "We've both got passions going on. Those are good things."
"As long as you don't let it consume you like I let mine consume me...."
"Well, there's the part where it almost did for a while there." Vanyel didn't like to admit to that much, but he had. Somehow he'd survived that though. Well, not somehow. 'Lendel had showed him there was more to the world than just music after his teenaged dreams had been crushed so that was probably what had saved him from becoming that person.
"You got through it, at least?" Meetra looked down at the sword, "I suppose we all do, eventually."
"Oh yeah." Vanyel eyedarted the smallest bit. "Took someone special to pull me out that time, but extracted me with most of my soul left intact."
Meetra smiled softly, "I suppose that's better than a lot of people get."
"True, true." Vanyel's order came up and he went to pick up his food, then came back to the table and settled back in with his fries and sandwich, idly dipping them in some ketchup as he considered. "I was lucky that happened. Who knows what I...I was kind of a wreck when I was younger."
She nodded, "a wreck?"
"Emo, self obsessed, determined I was God's gift to music, and/or fashion." He shook his head ruefully. "Scary, really."
Meetra laughed, "Emo I understand."
"It was a simpler time." Vanyel shook his head, clearly showing that his hair hadn't grown out of it so much.
A smirk crossed Meetra's face, "I made more friends in fencing tournaments than in high school. People either love me or hate me."
"And me, well, my friends were always older." Vanyel paused. "The two or three I had. High school can be...brutal."
Meetra didn't want to think about her friends from high school. She'd managed to alienate the lot of them.
Vanyel's only friend from around that time period was actually dead now, but he'd been in college at the time anyway, so that didn't count. "There's this girl at my school now." he confessed, shaking his head. "I feel sorry for her. So excited and eager to make friends and they just..." he shook his head. "I kind of hope I can drag her into choir or band next year. Do the whole Glee inspiration friendship thing. But then I'm weird like that."
"I hope you can too." Meetra shook her head, "That's not weird."
"Well, good to know." Vanyel grinned and dipped a fry. "At least the ones I've got in seem to be relishing the whole kumbayah thing so there's a start."
"...Do you really make them sing that?"
Vanyel laughed. "Actually, no. We stick to sane things, mostly. Usually." he eyedarted. "Kumbayah is one of those threats I have the sheet music for,."
She grinned slyly, "What would happen if you broke that one out?"
"Depends." He eyedarted. "Mass chaos, I think. Especially with the seniors."
"Maybe it'll be worth it."
"Well, it's worth a shot, isn't it?" Vanyel cackled. "Either they think I'm insane or worse."
"It might be fun. Maybe you could rewrite it. Or would that cause more chaos?"
"You are an asolute GENIUS." Vanyel snickered. "I think I adore you."
Meetra flushed, "Can't go too naughty though, right?"
"Not until they give me tenure." Vanyel joked, since that was pretty much NEVER happening, as far as he was concerned.
"How does that work? Tenure?"
"Long story short, your job's secure for a while. Arguably, you can do whatever you want during that time but.." Vanyel shook his head. "Personally, it's probably some kind of exageration just to make us all jealous."
Meetra chuckled, "Sounds like a friend. He's good enough at what he does he gets away with damn near everything."
"Must be nice." Vanyel laughed. "I'd enjoy that sort of thing."
"Oh no no no.."
"No?" Vanyel asked, raising an eyebrow. "Why not?"
"It can get..wild."
"Rock star wild? Hmm..." Vanyel considered. "Yeah, maybe that's not my scene."
"Pretty much. My friend has a..reputation." She chuckled.
"Well, so maybe like a toned down version of that." Vanyel admitted. "Would that be possible or is that kind of all or nothing?"
"Probably toned down," Meetra agreed.
"Well then." Vanyel shrugged. "There we go, huh?"
"Yes..." She poked at the remains of her lunch, "I'm sure you'll get tenure."
"So, that's a perfect compromise." He pointed out, liking it. "Won't get me through the band trip on Friday but..."
"Where are you going?"
"Knott's Berry Farm." Vanyel shuddered. "Teenagers, the theme park, and me." It was scary. Not completely scary, since, after all, he was GOING, but...
Meetra put a hand over his, "I'm so, so sorry."
Vanyel laughed and ducked his head a little. "If I survive, I'll be a hero."
"Then I hope you make it out alive." She laughed. She had her doubts.
"Well, thank you." Vanyel bowed from his seat. "I do intend to do my best."
"If you survive, maybe we could..have lunch again, sometime?"
"I'd like that." Vanyel nodded, and grinned. "I can tell you how it went."
"It's a lunch, then!" She wasn't about to say the word date.
That worked well for Vanyel, since, yeah. Women and all, not really his thing. "A lunch!" he agreed.
Leave it to Meetra to be attracted to a gay man. She gave him a smile as she got up, "Meet you here Saturday at 2, then?"
"Sounds like a plan." Vanyel nodded and smiled. "And you'll have to let me know how the new weapon goes."
"Thank you. I will!" She smiled at him, and then walked out, sword in tow.
And Vanyel smiled in return, and finished up his lunch too. He had a few things to head back for, but it was nice to make a friend.
