Zelda was sitting in the living room with Vala on the opposite sofa. She had a notebook of clippings and ideas open on the coffee table, and was holding a cup of tea in her small, delicate hands.
“So, you think we can make it the spectacle of the century?” Zelda asked, beaming. “I want something big this year. Since I’ve been working so much, it’ll be nice to let loose.”
"Oh sweetie," Vala smiled at her over the rim of her own teacup. "Big is my middle name," she winked. "So, talk me through some of these ideas," she gestured to the book laid out on the table in front of her.
Zelda gave a laugh, then nodded. “All right, so... I really love music. I thought maybe we could have someone big come and play.” She said, flipping through the pages. “Rent out a huge venue. I bet we could find some sponsors to get their names all over it.”
“Love it, love it, love it!” Vala proclaimed. “Now do you have any favourite bands or singers? I can see what I can do to book them for you,” Vala suggested.
“I love Taylor Swift,” Zelda said, eyes lighting up at that thought. “But really, anyone would be fine! I know that she’s busy this summer, going on tour and everything.” Zelda shrugged a little. “Maybe we can buy out one of my father’s hotels, and put everyone up in rooms for the weekend?”
“If money’s no option and your father agrees, that would be an excellent idea,” Vala agreed excitedly. This party was going to be epic from the sounds of it. “There are so many facilities available to people in a hotel,” she smiled. “As for entertainment, how about some more local talent? I hear there are a few local bands and singers who are recommended, maybe we could hold auditions for them or something,” Vala suggested. “See which one impresses you most?”
It must have been in the Hyrule handbook somewhere that money was no option. Especially for Daddy’s Little Princess. She really did get everything she wanted, whenever she wanted it. It was an absolute miracle that she wasn’t a spoiled brat. “Oh, that’s a great idea! I like that a lot! We can turn a meeting hall at the hotel into an audition stage, and pull in local talent!”
Vala couldn't help but bounce a little in her seat, "Excellent! Oh god, I'm so excited!" She grinned at the young girl. "Ok, so did you want a theme? Alice in Wonderland, fairytales, black and white ball, that sort of thing?"
“Oh, my gosh,” Zelda said, shaking her head a little. “I hadn’t even thought of that! What do you think? Maybe something like Alice in Wonderland wouldn’t be good, considering those huge mushrooms that happened not too long ago in Orange County. I kinda like the Black and White Ball idea. But my favorite colors are green and pink. Maybe we can do green and pink instead?”
“Ooo! I like it!” Vala crowed, imagining the scene in her mind’s eye already. “Original and daring, love it! What shades of pink and green? Baby or fuschia? Mint or forest?” Vala was almost bouncing in her seat as the vision appeared before her.
Zelda laughed. “Kelly and pale,” she explained. Sounded like an odd combination, but she loved it. “Ooh, wait!” She bounced up from her chair and darted into the kitchen. When she came back, she was holding a clear, glass jar with a handful of pink, white and green straws in it.
“Ahh, I see...” Vala took two of the straws out of the jar. “These kind of remind me of sweets...like that...that game...” she clicked her fingers together a couple of times as she tried to think of the name of that game everyone was talking about lately. Candy...candy... “Candy crush! We could deck the place out with candies and chocolate fountains and...” Vala put a hand over her mouth, realising she was getting a bit carried away but that it was not her party. “Sorry, what do you think?” she asked with a slightly bashful smile.
Zelda gasped. “I think that’s amazing! I love it! What a great idea! Candy Crush for my twenty-first! We should have the bartender come up with a slew of candy-themed drinks. Tootsie Roll Chocolate Martinis and whatnot!”
Vala clapped her hands together in glee that she liked the idea...and the fact that she’d have to go and test some cocktails for their ‘suitability’, woe was her...and Faye since she’d probably drag her along too, maybe even Max since it had been awhile. Speaking of which, better ask... “Right, so what sort of age range are we talking about guests-wise?” Please be over 21, please be over 21, please be over 21... She’s probably just do it anyway but it needed to be asked.
“Well, if it’s going to be my 21st, and there’s going to be alcohol, then the guests should be over 21, shouldn’t they?” Zelda said, giving a gentle shrug of her shoulders. She was already starting to wonder what alcohol brands might co-sponsor with Hyrule hotels. They could possibly get Dole in on it, too, if they made and served Pineapple Margaritas, or something. And the candy makers... them, too? Zelda may have inherited some of her daddy’s business smarts.
“Awesome, because marshalling a mixed age party when there’s alcohol on offer can be a nightmare!” Vala laughed, celebrating inside since it meant she could try a few of the cocktails herself on the night. “So, is there anything you want to try drink-wise, since it’ll be your first time drinking, I assume,” she winked naughtily. Everyone she had gone to school with had experimented with alcohol before the legal limit, that and being an Aussie meant that she naturally assumed practically everyone had as well.
Zelda laughed. “Oh, let’s not go there. I don’t want to get myself into trouble!” She said, shaking her head a little. “Though, I think with the candy theme, we’ll have to follow along... chocolate martinis? Jolly Rancher Vodka?” She said, breaking into a grin. “Those sorts of things!”
Vala chuckled at that and gave her a wink, “Your secret’s safe with me, love.” Vala pulled out her iPad and started recording their decisions and inspirations. “So, do you have any favourite sweets or chocolates? Cakes or desserts? I can see about getting some custom-made drinks done for you,” she smiled.
“Hmmm...” Zelda said, glancing at the iPad. She had a tablet of her own, and she loved it, so she wasn’t surprised that Vala had one to work with. “I don’t know. Don’t all girls love sweets and chocolates?” She gave a laugh. “For decorations, for the party food, we should probably stick with the ones that have the most color, the most excitement.”
“Yep, I’ll base most of the decoration colours around those straws you gave me,” Vala thought for a second. “Maybe give it a whole gingerbread house feel? I know a great baker who can do practically anything you want for food and I’m sure she can do decorations to match,” she smiled. “I can ask if she could get some samples together for you to sample if you like? How does that sound?”
“That sounds wonderful!” Zelda said, nodding. “I love it. Gingerbread, with lots of white, icing. I love icing. And cupcakes! There have to be about a thousand cupcakes.” She was terribly excited. “I’m going to be thinking about this nonstop for the next week, I’m sure!”
“Excellent! Then I can expect lots of emails,” Vala bumped shoulders with the girl playfully. “We are making excellent progress! Let’s see...a theme, drinks, catering...all we really need is a guest list,” she told her happily.
“Oh, my goodness. I’m going to have to get back to you on that one,” Zelda said, eyes going slightly wide. “It’s going to be a very, very long guest list. Everyone who worked on the movie, and the next... we’re starting the pre-production stuff toward the end of July, so I’ll start collecting names and addresses on that one, too.”
“Not to worry, give me a date and I can set out a timetable,” Vala re-assured her. “Then I can let you know when the latest I would need numbers for,” she smiled.
“Well, my birthday is September 26. So we can do any time after that.” Zelda pulled her phone out of her pocket and clicked open the calendar. “So, maybe September 28? That’s the first Saturday after my birthday.” She said, then turned the phone so that Vala could see. Doing it on a Saturday or over a weekend would probably be best.
“Great, the weekend of September 28th it is,” Vala smiled, tapping the date into her iPad. “I’d say then...” she thought about it briefly. “I’d need to know definite numbers by...the 7th? the 14th at an absolute push, how does that sound?”
“That sounds great to me!” Zelda said, nodding and smiling. “And I’ll email you my father’s contact information to use the hotel as our location.” She pushed up to her feet. It seemed like they had some of the plans all set, and she could walk Vala to the door.
“So I’ll get started on sourcing decorations and the catering and you,” Vala grinned, pointing to the girl as she stood to follow her. “Enjoy your last few months of being 20, you’re gonna miss ‘em. I know I do,” she advised in her quasi-sage way.
Zelda laughed. “I’ll keep that in mind. I’m having fun. More so now than before.” Before Link, she meant. Zelda’s life was quite a bit better now she was dating her hero. “Keep me posted if you come up with amazing things, all right? And I’ve got your number should I think of anything awesome that I’d like to add to party plans.” She pulled open the door to let Vala out.
"Will do!" Vala told her as she walked out of the front door. She turned when she got to her car and waved. "See you later!" She called before getting in her car and heading off. This was going to be an epic party, she sensed.
Zelda waved and smiled, then waited for Vala to drive out before locking the gate and turning back inside. She was so excited.
