Who: Darcy Lewis and Cassandra Cain
What: Someone is homeless. Again.
Where: A coffee shop
When: This afternoon
Rating: G (maybe PG for some brief language)
Status: Complete

Since her little talk with Loki, Darcy had been feeling a mixture of things. She really needed a drink, but not the kind that she normally had. In fact she was craving a milkshake. That’s why she was headed down into the ice cream shop and standing in line. Her phone went off and she scrolled through some things.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” she mumbled to herself. “How do I keep losing places to live?” ARGH.

After the events of the weekend, Cass could certainly use some ice cream. Sure, her and Violet had sat around eating ice cream on Saturday night after Gavroche had broken up with her, but that just meant that there wasn’t any left in the condo. Okay, so maybe Cass hadn’t gone out with the intention of having more ice cream. She’d gone out for a run in order to try and clear her head and at the end of that run, she’d happened by the ice cream place that her and Laura had gone to a little while back. Deciding that she could use a shake, she went inside.

She had just stepped into line, behind a girl who was looking at her phone when she overheard her speaking. It was obvious that she was talking to herself, but she sounded like she was distressed, “Are you alright?” She knew that some people didn’t like others butting into their business, but sometimes Cass couldn’t help it.

The sound of someone’s voice startled her a bit out of her reverie, and Darcy looked up to see who was talking to her. “Uh.. yeah.. I mean no. I just..” she let out a deep sigh and rubbed her forehead. Yeah she definitely needed some ice cream then. “For the second time, I’ve lost my place to live. I mean it’s no one’s fault or whatever, but it seems like every time I unpack shit, something happens and I’m homeless again.” For fuck’s sake.

“Oh man. I’m so sorry.” Cass could understand how the other girl felt, in a way. When she’d first decided that she needed to move out of her parents’ place after talking to Mr. Dresden, she hadn’t known where she’d go until Jubilee had spoken up and offered her a room at her place and then when Jubilee and Laura had started talking about buying a house, Cass wasn’t sure where she would have gone then, but as it turned out, when her friends moved out, Jubilee had managed to pass over the condo to her and now her and Violet were officially roomies. “What’re you going to do?”

It seemed that Darcy was destined to be without a home for quite a while. It was just her luck. “I.. have no idea. I mean last time, I was living in my car, until this guy I work with said I could stay with him. And now it looks like he’s moving, so I’m out again.” It was really frustrating. She didn’t want to pack all of her things. If only she had super powers, maybe she wouldn’t have given a crap. “I guess look around for a place with a roommate.” Hopefully someone needed one.

“Well you definitely can’t live in your car again. That’s not safe.” Cass said as they reached the front of the line, “And it can’t be comfortable either.” Despite the fact that she’d just met this girl and didn’t even know her name, Cass felt the need to help her somehow, “This is on me.” She said, indicating whatever the other girl was going to order. “And I’m Cass. Cassandra Cain.” Whether or not the girl would recognize her name, she didn’t know.

“No it’s not comfortable at all.” Right she guessed it wasn’t safe, though she hadn’t really thought much about that point. Darcy blinked a little and then smiled. “Oh thanks. That’s nice. Uh I’m Darcy. Darcy Lewis.” She thought she recognized that name, but wasn’t sure where from. “Do I know you from somewhere?”

“Only if you know anything about women’s gymnastics.” Cass smirked and ordered a strawberry and banana smoothie, “I was in the Olympics last year.” It was crazy when she thought about the fact that a year ago she was getting ready for the Olympics and how much had changed since then, “You seem kind of familiar too actually. You wouldn’t happen to be part of an on-line community called Valarnet, are you?”

“Oh! Well I watched it. So that’s probably where I’ve seen you.” Huh. Olympics. Man she just knew all the fancy people. Darcy had never talked to anyone from the Olympics before. “You were pretty good.” Well at least she wasn’t known for something like porn on the internet. “Yep, that’s me. I’m always on there talking too much.”

“Thanks. That seems like so long ago. Hard to believe it was only a year ago.” Cass ran a hand through her long, black hair as she waited for the smoothie, “I knew it. I just keep meeting people from there.” This was a good sign, because so far she hadn’t met anyone bad from Valarnet, “So, I’d have to talk to my roommate, but we have an extra room. My roommates I was living with just moved and left me the condo. So now there are two of us in a three bedroom condo.”

“I bet. It does seem like a while ago, even though it wasn’t.” Wow it had already been a year since the Olympics. That was kind of crazy. “You do tend to run into a bunch of us. I mean we’re all over, I guess.” Darcy hadn’t really thought about how many people she’d just met randomly because of it, but she supposed it was a pretty big number. “Really? I mean I promise I’m not like a crazy psycho or anything. I really am decent to live with.”

Cass nodded, “I mean, it all depends on what my roommate thinks. Is there anyone else on Valarnet that we could talk to maybe? You know, as a reference?” She figured that was the best way to make sure that Darcy was alright, not that she seemed creepy or anything like that. Cass recalled seeing her post before and she’d always seemed like a good person.

“Oh uh sure. Yeah there’s Thor Odinson.. and Jane Foster.. and Tony Stark is my boss. They could all give you references. And I can pay the bills cause I’ve got an actual job.” Darcy hm’d a bit, trying to think of more people that she could ask. “You can really just ask around. I’m legit, and you can even do a background check to make sure.” She didn’t mind.

Cass had heard of both Thor Odinson and Tony Stark before, both of which were very impressive references, “Well if you know people like that, then you must be legit.” She smiled, taking out her phone and opening a new contact, “Why don’t you give me your number and after I talk to my roommate, I’ll give you a call or text.” As long as it was cool with Violet, Cass didn’t see why Darcy couldn’t move in with them, “And really the only bills are water and electricity. I own the condo now, so there’s on rent or anything like that.”

“I’ve known Thor since uh.. forever. And Stark’s a good place to work. Even though he’s got some kind of weird issues with getting married.” She had no idea about that. Darcy gave over her number to Cass. “Okay sounds good. If she wants to meet me too, that’s totally fine. I have lots of references. You can talk to my mom if you want too.” Maybe she’d be decent about it. “Really? No rent? That’s kind of awesome. Thanks. Just let me know.”

Cass smiled as she pocketed her phone, “Yeah, actually that’s a good idea. We can get coffee or something.” Cass had gotten used to living with two other people while living with Jubilee and Laura and while she loved living with Violet, the condo was big enough for three people, so it felt like there should be three of them, “I’ll get back to you real soon. It was nice to meet you, Darcy.”
