“There. Does that look right?” Mitchell stood back as he surveyed the tent that he had just finished setting up. He’d never actually set up a tent before and had tried setting it up in the backyard the day before they’d left, which of course then resulted in him not being able to fit all the pieces back into the box the way they had come, but at least he’d figured out how to set it up ahead of time. The tent was one of those that fit up to five people despite the fact that there were only two of them. It just meant that they had plenty of room for the supplies they’d bought for the camping trip.

Turning her head from putting things away, Annie glanced over at the tent that Mitchell was putting up and tried not to giggle. It was a little lopsided, but not enough that it was awful. It wasn’t going to fall over or anything. It just amused her a little. “Oh yeah it’s good. Good job. I’m amazed you set it up all by your lonesome.” And quite impressive. “Much better than yesterday. I think it might actually stay up this time.” Now that it was up and secured, she started putting in the sleeping bags and things into the tent.

“Oh, haha.” Mitchell didn’t think he did too bad, considering the poles pretty much popped into place pretty easily, so it was kind of hard to mess up. If it looked lopsided, he was sure it would even out once there stuff was inside. “As long as the spikes don’t come loose, we should be fine.” If the spikes came out of the ground and a good wind hit it, there was every chance the tent could roll away and that was the last thing they needed or wanted.

It was quite good actually, she just liked teasing him about it. Of course maybe it helped that she had nothing to do with it, and he did it by himself. Annie tended to only mess things up. “Good, well we’ll just keep an eye on that. If it gets windy, we’ll have to sit down on the ground to prevent us from flying away.” Oh jeeze, let’s not talk about rolling anywhere. That would be such a bad camping trip. She tucked things away, and as soon as she was done, put the grill on the picnic table.

Mitchell laughed at the mental image of the tent rolling away with all their supplies, but at the same time, he was sure it would have to be a very strong wind in order to take their supplies with it. “Should I get started on the fire?” They had bought firewood on the way up to the campsite and there was a fire pit on the site, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to start a fire. He had no intention of telling Annie that he’d googled how tos for building a campfire. He needed her to think that building fires were things that all men knew how to do from birth.

Hopefully all of the things were heavy enough not to be blown away if it came down to that. Of course if there was a giant storm, she’d say screw the stuff and want to get back onto solid ground so to speak. Inside where it was warm and not wet. “Yeah that’s probably a good idea, before it turns dark. We can eat too.” All that work and she was pretty much starving. She wouldn’t have blamed him for googling. Heaven knew she didn’t know how to start a campfire either. “What shall we have? Hot dogs?”

“Hot dogs.” Mitchell said as he started stacking the firewood the way they had in the video, “Did you find the skewers?” If they were going to use the fire to cook the hotdogs then they were doing it the right way and that was on skewers.” Once the wood and kindling looked about right, Mitchell struck a match then dropped it in amongst the wood. He waited a moment to see if it would catch and as the fire slowly began to spread, he stood up, wiping his hands off on his jeans, “Fire is set.”

“Yup!” Annie pulled out the skewers from the bags of things that they brought with them for camping. As he got the campfire working, she went ahead and got the hotdogs and then put them on the skewers. She handed Mitchell his skewer and then got out the plates and hot dog buns for later. “Do you like ketchup or mustard or what?” she asked, going through the bag again.

Mitchell thanked her as he took the skewer and sat down in one of the folding chairs they’d brought with them then held the hotdog over the fire, “Ketchup is good.” Holding the hot dog over the fire, he glanced towards Annie and watched as she got everything else out. He had been looking at her a lot more recently; not that he hadn’t looked at her before, but he’d caught himself watching her a lot more when she wasn’t aware of it recently. Luckily today, he had his sunglasses on, so it was less likely that she’d notice him looking at her now.

Pulling out the ketchup, she put some on her own bun before passing it over. Then she went to put her hot dog over the fire to let it get nice and crispy. Hopefully it wouldn’t burn. That would suck. If she noticed that he was staring at her, she didn’t let on. Sometimes she watched him out of the corner of her eye and then blushed and looked away. Well he was very nice to look at, she couldn’t be blamed. “Oops.. I think you’re burning your hot dog, Mitchell.”

While he’d been watching Annie, Mitchell hadn’t realized that he’d let his skewer droop slightly and his hot dog was just in the fire. “Shite.” He lifted it out, inspecting it then proceeded to put it in the bun Annie had given him and put ketchup on it, “Not too burnt, so it should be fine. Don’t think anyone has ever died from a slightly burnt hot dog before.” He smirked at Annie before taking a bite of the aforementioned hot dog. He really hoped this weekend didn’t wind up getting awkward. Sure they shared a house, but that was very different than sharing a tent.

Annie couldn’t help but laugh a little because he’d obviously been a little distracted watching her. She let hers cook for a little longer since she hadn’t been putting hers directly into the fire and when it was nice and good, she put it in her hot dog bun. “No, but it’s still gross.” She grinned at him and wrinkled her nose. Ketchup was applied and she took a bite. Yeah that was good. “There’s something better about cooking on a fire then like boiling a hot dog, y’know?”

Mitchell didn’t eat hot dogs much, but he could agree with her, “Gives it a nice smoky taste.” He smirked as he finished off his hot dog and thought about having another one. They had some other food, so there was always that too. However, first, he needed a drink. Getting up, he went to the cooler, “Do you want a beer or anything?” He glanced over his shoulder at Annie

Well she didn’t eat them much either, but they definitely tasted better this way. “Exactly.” Hot dogs weren’t very filling, so she might have another one too. Hopefully without all of the burning this time. There was probably some other things they’d packed to eat too. Chips and things. “A beer would be great. Thanks.”

Mitchell pulled out two beers and went back to his chair, handing one over to Annie after opening it for her, “So, is camping what you’d expected so far?” He asked, taking a swig from his beer. Sure, they’d only been there for an hour or so and hadn’t really done anything yet, but they were still out in the middle of some random campground, cooking over a fire, which wasn’t exactly what everyone would find enjoyable and wasn’t what one would think of a former pop star doing.

Mmm beer. She took hers and took a sip. That made the hot dog that much better. “I think so. I mean as long as it’s not going to rain and I don’t get eaten by bears or anything, then I think it’ll be good.” She didn’t even know if there were bears in the area. Maybe her opinion would change if she had to go pee in the woods or something. That would be harsh. “What about you? Having fun?”

Mitchell couldn’t help but laugh at the beers comment, “I don’t think there are any around here. Could be wrong, but I don’t think they’d let people camp here if there were.” Mitchell would have a much easier time of peeing in the woods, but lucky for them both that there was a bathhouse with toilets not too far away from their site. “I’m having a good time so far.” Of course it helped that he liked his present company.

“I really hope you’re right, or you know what they say. You don’t have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the people you’re with. So.. sucks to be you.” She teased, winking at him. He was so lucky that he could go to the bathroom in the woods with no problem. but the bath house was a god send. “Good. I told you this was an excellent idea.”

“And what makes you think you’re going to outrun me?” He asked, quirking a brow at Annie, “Pretty sure my legs are longer than yours. Means I should be able to run faster.” Of course, if they did get attacked by a bear, he had every intention of helping her to also outrun said bear. “Course, I might miss you if you got eaten by a bear.” He smirked then took another swig of his beer.

Annie playfully rolled her eyes. “Your legs might be longer, but I bet I can outrun you if a bear comes. That’s pretty good motivation.” She stuck her tongue out at him too. Hopefully no bears would attack. And she wouldn’t honestly leave him behind or anything. “Aw gee thanks. I go from being murdered in my dreams to being eaten by a bear. That’s a super improvement.”

Mitchell laughed and held his beer bottle out, “To not getting eaten by bears.” He smirked at Annie then took a swig from said bottle. They spent the next couple of hours sitting around the fire and talking and drinking. At some point he’d taken off his sunglasses when it had become slightly overcast and he found that he barely needed to squint since they weren’t in any direct sunlight. Of course along with the clouds came a crash of thunder far off. Now this wouldn’t have been such a bad thing had that rain started as a slow drizzle, but almost immediately following the thunder, the sky practically opened up and dumped gallons of water on them, “Oh bloody fantastic.”

Eventually she just sat in her chair and stretched out her legs to watch nature as they talked. No sign of bears, but there were some deer around, passing through. Interesting. The lack of sunlight made her yawn a bit and she looked at her watch. That was odd. It wasn’t even that late. That was when the rain started, pouring down on them both. “Oh Jesus.. what the hell?!” she jumped up and went to dash under the enclosure they’d put up around the picnic table, but she was soaking wet. “Get under here!”

As usual, Mitchell had worn rather tight jeans, which in hindsight probably hadn’t been a good idea cause now that he was soaked, they were sticking, uncomfortably to his thighs. He followed Annie, getting under the enclosure, “Maybe we should make a run for the tent.” The tent and the picnic table weren’t very far from one another, but when it was raining like this, even a foot seemed far. Not to mention the fact that he’d had a few beers by now.

Not that Annie was looking at him like that. Nope not at all. She swallowed and looked cleanly away so that maybe she wouldn’t be tempted. She shivered a little and peered over to where the tent is. “I guess so? I mean we’re already uh.. really .. wet so.. maybe we should? I am pretty cold now and my sweater is in the tent.”

“Come on, we’ll run together.” Mitchell wrapped an arm around Annie’s shoulders then made a break for it. Reaching the tent, he unzipped it quickly so that Annie could get in first, which meant that he got even wetter. How exactly he was going to get out of these jeans was a mystery to him, but the first thing to do was to get in the tent.

Running along with him into the tent, by the time she got there she was quite soaked through. It was nice of him to try and shield her from the rain though. Crawling into the tent, she immediately took off her shoes so that she didn’t trample mud inside. “Good grief. Definitely time to get out of these wet clothes.” She went to tug off her shirt but then realized. “Oh um.. we should probably.. turn our backs to each other.” She turned around.

Mitchell zipped the tent up once they were inside and pulled off his own shoes, putting them in a corner where they wouldn’t get anything else wet. At her suggestion, he nodded, water dripping off the ends of his dark, curly hair. “That’s...yeah, probably a good idea.” Not that he was opposed to seeing her undress, but he couldn’t say that outloud, because that would make him extremely creepy. Turning his back to her, he pulled his shirt off then unbuttoned his jeans and somehow managed to get them off then he unzipped his sleeping bag and wrapped it around himself instead of getting into it.

Maybe when they’d lived with each other a bit longer or go more comfortable with each other, she wouldn’t have cared about taking off her clothes in front of him. In her dreams she never got to take off her clothes at all. As she pulled off her clothes and set them aside, she tried really hard not to have a peek. She was curious, she couldn’t really help herself. After trying to dry herself off as much as she could and putting her clothes away, she got into her sleeping bag, in her underwear and bra. She turned to see that he was in his sleeping bag as well. “I just knew it was going to rain,” she said quietly. They were awfully close.

To be honest, Mitchell had no shame and were it not for the fact that the rain had left him feeling cool and clammy, he probably wouldn’t have even wrapped himself in the sleeping bag, but he didn’t want to catch a cold or make Annie uncomfortable, so he laid down, wrapped up in the sleeping bag, “Hey, it had been sunny earlier. I blame you for this for saying it would rain earlier.” He smirked at Annie, “Are you warm enough?” It was crazy to think that they were in California, in June and they were cold from a little rain.

Though she wouldn’t have minded him walking around without any clothes on, she was a little cold so she stayed mostly in her sleeping bag. At least until she wasn’t cold anymore. And dry. “You’re right. I control the weather. You’ll get to that part of your dream in a while, but I’m totally in control. Like Storm from the comics. I’m that badass.” She just gave him a bit of a look and then shrugged and tugged down the sleeping bag a bit. “Yeah I think I am now.”

“Oh really? I wasn’t aware that ghosts could do that,” Mitchell chuckled, glancing over at her, “But I also didn’t know that there were vampires who didn’t go poof in the sun.” As he watched her, without even thinking about it, he brought a hand up out of his sleeping bag and swept some damp curls away from Annie’s face, fingertips brushing along the skin of her forehead and temple.

Annie just stuck her tongue out at him, like any mature and responsible person would do. “Now we both know. Ghosts control the weather and vampires go out in the sun.” She gave a shy smile, and when he reached over to touch her, she inhaled just slightly. Every time he was near her, she felt this very strong connection to him. For a moment her eyes shut and when she opened them, she leaned over and brushed her lips against his without thinking.

Part of Mitchell had wanted to lean forward and kiss her, so it was as if she’d read his mind. At the brush of her lips, he did lean forward and kissed her properly. He’d been wanting to do this ever since the dream where they’d accidentally kissed. In the dream it had cool, but now her lips were warm and soft and he wondered why he hadn’t done this before.

Oh good it wasn’t exactly awkward and it wasn’t bad. Not that she’d been worried, but she tended to think that guys would get put off if they weren’t interested. Then it would be weird since they lived together. She thought about that kiss in the dream, but this was much better. She could actually feel his lips, and he was really kissing her. Annie made a little pleased noise and slid her fingers into his hair.

As they kissed the only sounds in the tent was their breathing as well as the rain that came down through the trees and splattered again the tent. Mitchell wasn’t thinking about the rain though or anything else except Annie’s lips against his, the way her skin felt under his fingers where his hand rested at the curve of her jaw. After another moment or two, Mitchell finally pulled away, panting softly as he looked at Annie, realizing then how this could complicate things for them.

Kissing him was so very nice. She really liked kissing him. It was only then that she realized just how much she had wanted to kiss him all that time. Of course she still had to breathe and so when she pulled back, she let out a breath and just kind of stared back. “Uh.. so..” she swallowed slightly. “That was um.. nice.”

Relieved that she didn’t seem freaked out or anything by the kiss, Mitchell’s lips turned up into a small smile, “Yeah. It was. Warmer than that one in the dreams.” It was still raining outside the tent and Mitchell realized that it wasn’t raining as hard as it had been when they’d come into the tent. “Sounds like it’s slowing down out there.”

Oh good. No freaking out on either side. That was good. Really good. Annie laughed a little at his comment. “Definitely warmer than the one in the dream.” Between her ghost thing and his vampire thing, it was a bunch of cold lips. Not bad but not good either. She stopped and listened for a bit. “Yeah, that’s good. I guess we should change into warm clothes and find somewhere to dry these.”

Mitchell nodded and, reluctantly, moved away from Annie. He really wanted to kiss her again, but he didn’t want to make things awkward. Just because they’d kissed, that didn’t mean anything really. “Hopefully that’s the only rain we’ll get this weekend.” He was already pulling clothes out of his bag, trying to think of a way they could dry their wet clothes in an attempt to not think about kissing Annie again. Sleeping near her was going to be torture for the next two nights.
