Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Martha Jones and Tessa
WHAT: Finally meeting and talking
WHEN: Backdated: Wednesday, June 5th. Early Evening
WHERE: St. Joseph's Hospital
RATING: Family Friendly
STATUS: Complete

Martha had just finished her rounds and was heading towards the cafeteria for what was going to be her second cup of coffee of the day and surely not her last. As she walked, she was thinking about Mickey, about the texts that they had exchanged over the last week or so and about the date they had set up that was quickly coming up. She realized, as she walked that she hadn’t told Molly or Nina about her upcoming date and made a mental note to text them both when she got off that night. Or maybe she’d stop by the morgue before she left to see if Molly was there and bring her up to speed on Mickey. Molly had seemed to like Mickey enough when he’d approached them both at the bar, so she was sure that her friend would be happy to hear how well things were going so far.

She was so preoccupied with thinking about Mickey and everything else that she didn’t realized that she was about to walk right into someone who was coming out of the cafeteria.

Tessa had just helped to transport a patient from the scene of an accident nearby. Normally, she worked Irvine General, but it was a critical case, and they’d been closer to St. Joe’s. She’d just stopped off to grab a cup of coffee before heading back to work, not in any particular rush, but needing something to help her decompress between cases. She had to backpedal a bit to avoid bumping into the doctor who was coming in as she was heading out, and realized that she might need more than just a cup of coffee to ground herself.

Good thing her shift was almost over. “Sorry,” she said, stepping out of the way. “It’s been a long day.”

“Oh crap. I’m so sorry.” Martha said, not having recognized Tessa just yet, “I didn’t make you spill that, did I?” The last thing she wanted to do was make someone spill hot tea or coffee on themselves. Then again, if you were going to bed burned, wasn’t a hospital as good a place as any to do it? As her head finally began clearing completely from her day dreaming, she realized that she knew the other woman, “Tessa?”

“No, it’s fine,” Tessa assured her, “No harm; no foul.” She smiled at the recognition, and nodded her head, relaxing a little. “Dr. Martha Jones, right? It’s been a while. How’s life treating you?”

Martha was glad that she’d gotten the other woman’s name right and hadn’t just thought she knew who she was as a result of her exhaustion, “Right. It’s going well and yourself?” She had talked to Tessa a few times on Valarnet, but hadn’t yet actually met her in person, which was a shame because they had gotten along well in the times they’d spoken.

“Busy, but good,” the EMT replied. “Planning a wedding for late October, helping my fiance move house. Dealing with the aftermath of dreaming.” She smiled, and shrugged her shoulders. “Pretty much the usual.”

“Congratulations!” Martha smiled, happy that the other woman seemed to be doing well, “I’m a long way from getting married, but I do have an upcoming date that I’m looking forward to.” Of course had she not been thinking about Mickey, Martha might not have almost collided with Tessa. “The dreams are pretty intense sometimes, aren’t they?”

“Oh, good for you!” Tessa said sincerely. Martha seemed like a lovely person, and she was gorgeous to boot. Tessa was happy to see her so excited. “I hope things go well.”

She nodded as talk turned to the dreaming. “The dreams can be intense, and the powers that come through with them, even more so. At least for some.”

“Thanks. It’s actually a guy who came into the ER a few weeks earlier and then I happened to run into again in a bar a few days later.” Normally Martha hated when guys tried to hit on her in bars, but Mickey had been so nice and sweet and Molly had approved of him as well, so she didn’t see any downsides to this. “Yours have powers? In mine I just travel around in a blue Police Box with a guy called The Doctor.”

"At least you've already seen him on a bad day, so you know it can only go up from there," Tessa said, smiling. Meeting people in bars could be risky business but it sounded like Martha had liked the guy before the bar, so that was good. She nodded, and shrugged her shoulders at the question of powers. "I'm the grim reaper. Or one of his lieutenants, anyway."

Martha’s brows rose slightly at that, “Wow, really? Kind of ironic since you’re an EMT here, huh?” Martha always found it interesting when a person’s dream self was the exact opposite of how they were in the waking world. “So, you go around collecting souls or something?”

"I do, actually," she said, nodding. "Stop time, jump between dimensions, shoo them in the right direction, try and stop them becoming vengeful spirits. That sort of thing." It was kind of exhausting to think about.

“Sounds like you could use a TARDIS.” Martha was pretty sure that with a TARDIS Tessa could herd tons of souls and not even break a sweat. After all, she could go to any time and place and come back to where she started and it’d only be as if a day had passed. Or longer, depending on when exactly she returned.

“I’m pretty sure I am a TARDIS,” Tessa said, laughing. “I even have a chameleon switch, and a perception filter, or whatever you want to call it. I’m just glad I haven’t shifted permanently to the metaphysical plane.”

It was slightly ironic, considering she knew someone who actually was the TARDIS. It was still a little crazy to think that, in her dreams, Tara was the TARDIS. She couldn’t imagine dreaming about being a blue police box that was also sort of alive. “Now that’s pretty cool.” She glanced at her watch, checking to see how much more time she had to chit chat, “Is it strange that I’m glad that I have weird dreams? I mean, it’s be kind of boring if in my dreams I was just a doctor.” But a medical student who traveled through space and time? Now that was what she called fun dreams.

Tessa could just imagine what a headache Tara must get, every time Jack came back to life. And what a headache she’d get now, if it started happening with Jack or Alex. “As long as your dreams don’t turn real life as crazy as ours.”

“Well, The Doctor is already here and unless Tara actually turns into a big, blue police box, I think we’re safe.” Then again, with all the crazy stuff that happened in the OC, it was almost as if Martha’s dreams already had come true. There was just less running around with The Doctor and no time traveling. The time traveling would actually be pretty cool, if she was honest.

“Let’s hope so,” Tessa agreed, crossing her fingers. Not that she was superstitious, but one could never be too careful. “I suppose I should get back to work, and let you get to your lunch. It was good talking to you, though! We should have coffee on purpose sometime.”

Martha nodded, “We definitely should. I’ll never say no to coffee.” She smiled, glad that she’d run into Tessa since she’d been so busy lately that running into the other woman, randomly, was going to be the only way they were ever going to meet in person, “Hope you have an easy night.” With that Martha went into the cafeteria to get her coffee.
