They fought a lot, Darcy realized. Ever since she had gone out with Loki, that was about all they did. Because they were both really stubborn and neither one liked to be wrong. She knew she shouldn’t have been so harsh, but apparently it was okay for him to be a jerk. Whatever. She wasn’t even sure she cared anymore. She went to the bar and met her friends. They all helped, drinking and making her forget things.
After a while she went to find Jane and sat down next to her. “So.. let me get you another drink.”
"Already?" Jane asked, already a little tipsy and eyeing the half empty glass of rum and coke in her hand. "But I've not finished this one yet," she told Darcy. They'd been there awhile and Jane had been given three shots, a cocktail and a beer to drink already, so her head was feeling quite fluffy and her tongue looser.
She grinned at Jane and sat back. “Okay okay, I can wait until you finish that one.” Apparently they had different philosophies about drinking. Still she wasn’t going to force Jane into one more drink. “So.. Loki was an asshat who said he was amused by his dreams. You know like the one in which he tries to kill us.”
“He was amused by that?!” Jane sat up, feeling outrage rise in the back of her throat. “That was terrifying!”
“Well he said something like the more he dreamed, the more he enjoyed it and it was interesting. Oh and that he understands how some of the things he did in the dream might look bad. And I get it. That’s not real. I don’t think he’s ever going to attack me or hurt me. Don’t get me wrong. I just..” Darcy sighed a bit. “I got angry because it sounded like he was being amused at killing a bunch of people. Maybe he’s right, I shouldn’t get mad at him when he has no control over it, but that doesn’t mean he has to be amused by it.” It worried her more than anything.
“There’s something weird about that, Darcy,” Jane told her, shaking her head and putting her glass down on the table in front of her. “He sent that...thing to destroy us, no-one should be getting off on that,” she looked Darcy straight in the eye. “And are you sure he wouldn’t hurt you? I mean...” she swallowed and tried to think about what she was about to say. “I’ve heard that people have, y’know...changed after they’ve had their dreams, do you think that could be happening to him?” she asked gently, she didn’t want to upset her friend, but she was worried about her.
“I know.. it’s weird. And maybe I took it out of context, but he really should have explained himself better if that’s the case.” Darcy frowned a bit. She knew that it was a slight danger, and that this whole thing had gotten out of control in a way. This was why she had never made a move on him until now. “I’m pretty pretty sure. Each time he has a dream, I worry though. I mean I’ve told him that I worry. That I want him to be okay. I just..” she shrugged. “I tried to apologize and he told me to go away for a while.”
“Maybe that’s a good thing,” Jane consoled her. “Let’s face it, our dreams are pretty fucked up, maybe he needs space to be able to deal with it better? Let’s face it, laughing about it isn’t really a ‘normal’ response to what we’ve seen,” Jane rationalised, laying a hand on hers. If Darcy had confidence in him then maybe she should too, maybe she should trust in Loki’s ability to cope with these things in his own way.
“I know we need space. It just .. seems so early to need it.” Which she hated. Darcy shook her head a little. “I told him that I was absolutely no good at this. And I gave in and now I’m fucking everything up. As usual.” Why she couldn’t ever keep a guy was beyond her.
"Darcy, what he's been dreaming about isn't really normal, let's face it," Jane told her. "I think you should give yourself a break and stop being so hard on yourself, give it some time, then see what happens coz let's face it, in his dreams he tried to kill you," Jane smiled. "That's gotta mess with your head."
“Yeah I know. It’s not normal, and it’s not real.” Except where he would be getting those powers like Thor got his. And then what if he changed? Yeah she was stressing about it. A lot. “I’ll try. I mean I think I love him so I know I need to work it out.” She was just bad at working things out. Mostly.
“Oh sweetie,” Jane comforted, wrapping her arm around Darcy’s shoulders. “Have you told him?”
She shook her head a little. “No. It’s too early for that. I don’t want to freak him out. Especially now.”
Jane rested her head against Darcy’s with a sigh, before laughing a little. “You never do things the easy way do you?”
“Mm nope. That would be boring.” Darcy leaned her head up against Jane’s and sighed a bit. “We should just run away together.”
“Probably be easier,” Jane agreed with a smile. “But you’ve got this Loki stuff to deal with and I’m toying with the idea of becoming a lesbian,” she dead-panned, completely serious.
Her eyebrows raised up a bit. “Really? Because you say the word, and I’ll dump him and we can go out.” Darcy was kidding. Mostly.
Jane chuckled, “Well apparently I give off that signal. I got propositioned today by a girl at the library when I was looking into some research on Thor and stuff,” she admitted shyly, unable to stop the little grin forming on her face and feeling herself blush. It felt good to be wanted again, she thought.
That made Darcy grin for some reason. “Oh? Was she hot?” she was teasing her a bit. She couldn’t help it. It was nice to see Jane smile again.
“I...I guess,” Jane hedged. “I don’t know, I’ve never really looked at girls that way before,” she admitted. “Her name was Maia, she kind of left me with an open invitation,” she shrugged.
“Me either. Well I mean I know if they’re hot or not, but that’s about it.” She hadn’t actually been with a girl before. “Okay, one more drink and then we’re taking each other home. In a taxi.”
“Why, Ms Lewis, what are your intentions?” Jane teased in a haughty voice, pretending to look affronted by the suggestion with a hand on her chest.
Her eyebrows wiggled at Jane. “You’ll see once I get you safe and sound, my dear.” Darcy twirled her pretend evil moustache.
Jane returned Darcy’s eyebrow wriggling for a minute, trying to look alluring before bursting out laughing at Darcy twirling her moustache. “Oh god! It really would be so much easier, wouldn’t it!” she told her, trying to regain her breath. They got got on so well, and none of this relationship crap got in the way.
She started to laugh as well and shook her head. “It would be a bit easier. Stupid men.” Yeah it was really too bad. Darcy would have gone for Jane in a heartbeat. “Shall we go then?” Oh yes she’d had far too much.
