Fang avoided getting into a car whenever possible. It usually meant she was walking home in dangerous, and sometimes dark conditions. She didn’t really mind though - she never thought she was in danger and she enjoyed the solitude.
Plus she had a sword in her cane and wasn’t afraid to hit people with it.
Eli was sitting on a bus bench near a park. She wasn’t really waiting for the bus, but just people watching. People watching was fun.
Fang spun her cane around, then tapped it on the ground as she walked. Part of her was paranoid if she ever left it home that would be the day her leg would spasm. Part of her just felt stylish with it. And part of her was afraid to let go of something that had been with her nearly ten years. She smiled as she sat down on the bus bench. “Hey.”
Smiling at the new arrival, Eli nodded. “Hello. I like your cane.” She didn’t want to comment on the woman’s legs or anything - she didn’t seem to be differently abled - but the cane lent the woman a certain debonair appearance.
“Thanks.” She stroked the dragon’s head on the cane and grinned. The girl was cute. Maybe a couple of years too young for her, but cute.
“Are you waiting for the bus? I do not think it’ll be coming for a while,” Eli murmured, looking for a clock.
“Just taking a break, and I was kinda hoping, yeah. Got off shift a bit later than usual.” She shrugged her shoulder, like it didn’t really bother her much. “What brings you out so late?”
“Oh, I’m nocturnal. This is fairly early for me.” Eli smiled. “Would you like an escort home?”
She looked at her, then chuckled. “You’re offerin’ me an escort home? No offense. But you’re tiny.”
“And?” Eli raised an eyebrow. “You know what they say about books and covers, Miss.”
“Y’got spunk. Sure, I’ll take an escort, but only if y’let me properly pay you back.” She tapped her cheek. “Kiss, right there.”
“I do not think my boyfriend will be so upset. Just there.” Eli sat up very straight, closing her eyes.
Fang laughed lightly, and gave Eli a smack on the cheek with her lips. “There. Now my flat is a few blocks over. I don’t normally take girls there but I make an exception for mates.” She pushed herself to her feet.
Eli held out an arm for Fang to take, smiling and shaking her head. “I am surprised you do not have a lady of your own, if you do not mind my saying so.”
She took Eli’s arm, her smile faltering a little bit. “Well, I’ve had plenty of ladies, just never any that I want to keep for m’self, if you catch my drift. At least not in a long time.”
That made Eli nod. “It is hard to find someone like that.” She felt fairly lucky in that regard, if only because she’d already done so and she was only sixteen.
“I did,” Fang said, almost inaudibly. She hadn’t thought about it in a long time, but there was this girl she kept seeing on the network that reminded her of Vanille so much that she couldn’t stand it.
Eli heard her; vampiric hearing was quite keen. “What was she like?”
Wincing, Fang looked around, and then up at the sky. “Cheer given form. Always looking on the bright side of things. Always finding the positive. Always eager to go on an adventure with me.”
“I think you need someone cheerful. If you do not mind me saying so.” Eli squeezed her hand, looking up and smiling to herself. “You seem like me - we focus on the negative things for too long, sometimes.”
“It’s what makes sure you survive. I try to get better at it,” Fang replied, sighing. “Vanille was just this...fresh air.” She hadn’t driven since.
“Have you thought of trying to find her again?” Eli cocked her head to the side. “I would die for my Athelstan. I love him.” He didn’t know that, but he didn’t need to; she loved him regardless of his feelings for her.
“She’s gone.” Fang turned her head to look at Eli, then squeezed her arm with her free hand. “That’s love, right there. I would die, I would kill. I would lay waste to a city if I had to.” Fang could get obsessive and a little violent.
Eli’s eyes went silver-gold as they went under a streetlight, and she felt her fangs prick her lower lip. “Yes. This I understand.”
Fang nodded. If she hadn’t been told Vanille was dead, she would have torn that hospital apart to find her. And she almost had. “You just have to move on though. Can’t dwell on the past. It’ll eat you up.”
“You know that miracles can happen here, yes?” Eli stopped walking so she could look up at Fang.
She stopped too, looking down at Eli, blinking her eyes. “bring the dead back?”
“I don’t know. But do not give up hope. All I know is that I moved here with my mother a few months ago. Now I am ... not really even a girl any longer.” She’d found love and her family. she felt blessed.
“I’ve heard of fantastic things. Things that shouldn’t be possible. Seen things out of the corner of my eyes...” Fang started moving again. “There’s this girl on the net. She..sort of reminds me of her.”
“Oh? Perhaps they knew each other. ... I’m one of those fantastic things, you know. I could probably lift you over my head with my pinky.”
Fang wasn’t sure she wanted to talk to her, but she might have to stalk her internet posts for awhile to see if she could figure something out. “Maybe. We’ll see.”
“Do you want me to carry you home?” Eli wanted to cheer up her new friend.
She laughed. “You’re bluffing!”
“I’m not!” Eli smiled, then easily picked Fang up under one arm and started to run with her. She ran slower than she would have had she been alone, but it was fast enough for a human to realize they were going fast.
“Holy...!” Fang flailed, staring at Eli in shock as they moved quickly. Her mind refused to process this.
Eli slowed, smiling and setting her down. “I do not bluff.”
“That was...was..what the hell was that?!” Fang swayed on her feet and then leaned on her cane, dizzy.
“A few of the benefits of the changes I’ve experienced. I do not know what it is about this place, but ... I dreamed of who I am in another life, or another universe. And I slowly became more and more like them.”
"...But don't you lose who you are?" Few things could make Fang feel this fear in the pit of her stomach. Becoming someone else was one of them.
Eli shook her head. “I have not. I’m not as manipulative as the person in my dreams. Or as placid.”
Fang shook herself, making sure she didn’t lose any parts of her when Eli did that. “That’s...that’s really good. I like who I am..I don’t want to change..” She didn’t think her dreams were very strange, anyway. She’d lived here awhile anyway. But her beliefs had been shaken.
“It feels more like a story your parents tell you about when you were very small, so it is before you remember anything. About you, but not.” Eli smoothed out her hair. “Though it has changed me physically. That is harder to deal with, but that does not happen to everyone.”
“Physically?” She rubbed at her left arm absently. There was nothing there, but some nagging part of her thought there should be - and she didn’t want it.
Eli sighed and looked up at Fang for a moment before letting her own pop. They weren’t pretty like some vampires’ - they were obviously used to tear. “It is why I am out at night. I cannot go out during the day. Do not worry, I will not hurt you.”
"....Huh." It had the opposite reaction it should have. It made Fang calm down a little bit. That wasn't so bad, and it explained a lot. "So you're like Casper the friendly vamp?"
That made Eli laugh. “I think most vampires are friendly. At least, the ones that are here. I do not know.”
She blinked again. Huh. “Wonder if I’m one. I do like bitin’ women!”
That made Eli snort. “I do not think so.”
“I suppose you’d know. We’re almost at my stop.” She patted Eli’s shoulder, awkwardly. “...this was enlightenin’...”
Eli smiled and shook her head. “And you still treat me as a child. Adults are special.”
“You’re tiny,” Fang repeated her complaint from earlier. “But you’re more mature than a lot of brats I know.” She grinned.
“I will take that as a compliment, Sir Fang.” Eli bowed deeply, grinning the whole time.
“It was good to meet you. I guess I don’ need to tell you to stay safe.” She gave a little wave, then turned to walk off.
