Kitty felt heavy, without her powers. It was a strange and terrible feeling. Being normal. She didn’t know if she liked it or not.
She knocked on the door, wanting to check on Logan, and hoping she could meet Eli.
Eli was the one to answer the door. She peered at the new arrival, her wide blue eyes blinking slightly. “May I help you?”
She smiled at her. “Hey. I’m Kitty, one of Logan’s friends. I wanted to see how he was doing without his powers.”
“Swearing at beer,” Eli smiled. “Come in, you can help him curse.”
“You have gorgeous eyes,” Kitty said, as she came in. “But I’ll try not to burn your ears off.”
Eli blushed a little. “Thank you. It is all right, my ears seem to be fine. Papa speaks of you often, I am glad to finally meet you.” Eli’s accent was more profound around strangers.
Eli was adorable. Kitty wanted to hug her and squeeze her and call her George. She held out her hand in greeting. Official like.
Taking the older woman’s hand, Eli smiled to herself. “He tries to be your papa as well, doesn’t he.”
“Yeah. He has that … yeah.” Kitty laughed. “He’s kind of like a sensei to me. My teacher, my trainer, like a father... “ She came inside. “I’ve had more bruises from him than just about anyone.”
“He tries to be a papa to the world.” Eli smiled a little, moving to the kitchen to get some juice. If she could eat, she was going to eat all the things she loved. “It is one of his better qualities.”
“It really is.” Kitty followed Eli into the kitchen, stuffing her hands into her pockets. “It can be overbearing sometimes, but he means well. Makes him really fun to mess with too.”
“Oh, it’s true.” Eli beamed to herself. “Especially since he is in love and does not like to admit that, either.”
“You should have seen the look on his and Vel’s face after me and Alyssa got him and Vel on a date together.” Kitty was ridiculously proud of that.
That made Eli outright giggle, something she didn’t do often. “What did you do?”
“Well, Alyssa made him think she was late, and I told Vel I was hooking her up on a blind date!”
Eli’s jaw dropped. “Oh, goodness. That would be terrible if it had not worked!”
“I know! They’re so adorable together it hurts!” Kitty was in a really good mood now. SHe could put her own shit aside and concentrate on someone she cared about.
Eli offered Kitty a smoothie, especially since she wanted one for herself. “Would you like something to drink? I’m able to eat food today, I do not know why, so I am well pleased.”
“I’d love something to drink. Smoothies cure all things,” Kitty said, smiling. She blinked. “Huh. I thought I was just having an off day. You normally can’t eat food?”
“Oh, no.” Eli shook her head. “I am a vampire.” Eli bit her lower lip. “Well. I was. Before today.”
“One of my besties is a vampire,” Kitty assured her. She looked down at her hand. “I could walk through walls. Like a ghost. But I can’t today. It feels really weird.”
“It feels odd being out in the sun again. I am so scared I will become what I once was and be hurt.”
“Keep an umbrella close, and be prepared to run like hell,” Kitty said, with a sage nod of her head. “So I’m told you have a boyfriend?” Grinning. Like the cat that just caught the mouse.
“I do.” Eli felt no reason to hide that, so she simply answered very logically.
“Wanna talk about him? Is he cute? He has to be cute, you’re adorable.”
“I think he is cute. And are you being a spy for Papa? I will speak to you if you do not ... what is the phrase, rat me out?”
She held a hand over her heart, “Scout’s honor, I won’t rat you out. I’m curious for myself, and I was your age and in love once too.”
“I do not know I love him. But he is kind. Sweet. He went to an all boy’s school, so he is very ... gentle.” Eli smiled happily just thinking of him.
It was enough to make Kitty smile along with her. “Let things happen naturally, Eli. I know you probably don’t want advice, but I rush into so many things I’m a good example of what not to do.”
“Oh, I am not rushing things. I find it one of his better traits.” Eli smiled. “I like that he thinks before he leaps. He makes charts.”
“He makes charts?” Kitty was imagining a teenage boy making charts about how to date a girl. It was cute.
“Not literally. At least, I do not think so.” Eli beamed at the idea of Athelstan doing so. “He is a bit older than I, but I do not think Papa will mind.”
“Mm. I hope. Then again, with the number of teenage girls that follow Logan around he has no room to say,” Kitty said, laughing.
“If he yells at me, I will just give him the puppy eyes.” Sometimes her father was just too easy.
“Big big eyes?” Kitty asked, then opened hers wider. She had the big brown mooney eye thing going, which was super effective against Logans. “You should see Jubilee’s.”
Eli let her lower lip wobble, her blue eyes filling with tears.
Kitty hugged her immediately. “Oh my god you’re cute evil incarnate! You win! You win!”
That just made Eli laugh. “It used to work on my nannies as well. I just have more practice.”
“Yeah.” She ruffled Eli’s hair. “We should check on Logan. He’s probably feeling a little off. Or enjoying getting drunk.”
“Or getting dangerously drunk.” Eli worried about her father more than she cared to admit.
“Yeah...he won’t know how bad this is gonna hit him.” Especially since trying to carry around a hundred pounds of metal was going to be a bitch.
Eli worried her lower lip, looking around to get him a glass of water or something. Finding a sparkling fruit juice, she grabbed it and was ready to take it to her father.
“...you do good by him.” She put her hand on Eli’s shoulder and squeezed. “he’s a lucky guy.”
That made Eli duck her head. “I just ... I knew he was my papa.” Eli blushed a little.
Kitty squeezed again. “Lets go make your papa feel better.” She must turn Logan to mush on a daily basis.
She smiled and squeezed Kitty’s hand. “I hope he is all right.” She bit her lower lip, feeling worried about her father.
“He’s come back from worse!” Kitty led Eli back towards Logan’s room.
“I hope so!” Eli was worried about her father; he’d just seemed sluggish and sad.
Sluggish and sad were an understatement, but he hid it well when he saw them. “What kinda conspiracies are afoot?”
Blue eyes immediately looked concerned, and Eli tried not to be teary. “Oh, Papa,” she murmured, running toward him and wrapping her arms around him.
Logan chuckled and hugged her. “I’m okay. Just got walloped. An’ probably drank a little too much.”
Kitty squinted her eyes. “Uh huh. You sure you’ll be okay?”
“I’ll be fine, for now.”
“Here. Drink water,” Eli scolded, wrapping her arms around his waist and burrowing. “You need more fluids than beer.”
“Damn right,” Kitty agreed.
Logan looked at her like she was crazy, but took the water anyway and sipped at it. He squeezed an arm around her shoulder. He was outnumbered.
“Are you all right, Papa?” Eli turned his head so he’d have to meet her eyes. “I am worried about you. You seem... fragile.”
“I’m fine, Eli. Jus’ a little down. All this metal makes me feel kinda sick is all. An’ I drank too much.” That was his excuse and he’s sticking to it.
“Well, here.” Eli moved to massage his temples. “Should we take you to a doctor?”
“Yeah. Faiza is out of town but I think she can refer us to a couple of people,” Kitty said, agreeing with Eli.
Logan shook his head. “Thanks, but no thanks. Doc ain’t got anything to help with this, I just gotta grin and bear it.”
“Is there anything I can do to make it more bearable?” She stroked his head, biting her lower lip. She could tell he was in pain, and it made her want to cry.
“...be yourself. Enjoy the sunlight while you can.” Logan rubbed at her back.
Eli shook her head. “I’m staying here with you,” she murmured, climbing onto the chair with him and cuddling close. Sometimes, it was easy to forget that she was sixteen because she acted so much older. This was not one of those times. She looked her age in her worry.
It made Kitty want to snap a picture, so she did with her phone knowing that Logan couldn’t stop her. “I’ll leave you two alone...”
“You don’t gotta go, pumpkin,” Logan said.
Kitty resisted the urge to wibble.
Eli smiled, motioning Kitty over. “What is the phrase? Puppy pile?”
“Come on over.”
Kitty sighed, then came over and sat on one side of the bed. She found herself pulled over, and snuggled in against Logan. She sighed and closed her eyes.
“I am glad I have two sisters,” Eli chuckled, wiping her eyes before reaching out to take Kitty’s hand over Logan’s stomach.
“Mm? Laura?” Kitty squeezed Eli’s hand, her eyes still closed. This felt so nice, especially after the past two weeks. Logan, if something happens to you, I swear to God I will cross over and haul you back.
Eli nodded. “I have not spoken much with her, but I would like to.” Eil nuzzled into Logan’s chest, feeling content and cosy.
Logan exhaled with a soft grunt. “Yeah. I’d like that....”
Kitty smiled. “Don’t forget Jubilee. That makes three sisters. Alyssa too.” She smiled wider. “And if Megan and Hisako showed up...”
“Kitty...”
“Shut up, Logan, it’s true. You’re like a magnet for us.”
“Perhaps it is because he is so ... fertile. Maybe we really are his children.” Eli couldn’t help but giggle.
"He has a thing for red-heads and asian girls, so that explains quite a few of us. I'm pretty sure I missed a couple too!"
Logan thwapped them both lightly on the arms. "That ain't even remotely true. Pretty sure I was nowhere near Sweden when Eli was born."
“I doubt you would want to sleep with my mama, either. She was very ... strict.” Eli was shocked that her mother had even had sex enough to have her.
Kitty snorted. “The strict would be a turn on. Don’t you know the librarian stereotype? The quiet strict ones are the most wild!”
“Kitty!”
Eli shook her head. “It is not possible anyway.” She didn’t really want to go into the ‘yeah, I killed my mom after I ate her’ thing.
“Yeah...” Logan rubbed Eli’s shoulder and squeezed it. He closed his eyes and nuzzled Eli’s hair. “Got Vel.” That was better.
“You could probably buy her glasses if you like, Papa.” Eli smiled. “I can go to Athelstan’s flat and let you have the house.”
“Glasses o’what?” Logan blinked.
“... for her face, Papa. So you can pretend she is a librarian who is scolding you?” Eli looked at Kitty. “Should I be explaining this to my father?”
Kitty started giggling uncontrollably. “Oh god. Okay okay I’ve actually got a pair of glasses in my truck. For in case my contacts fall out.”
“....you wear contacts?” Logan blinked. “Huh..forgot about that.”
Eli shook her head. “They would hurt her eyes, we’d have to get her ones that are not prescription.” She only felt a little weird about helping her father get weird sex.
“good point.” Kitty nodded and nuzzled Logan’s shoulder.
“Do I get a say in this?”
“No.”
Eli smiled and squeezed Kitty’s hand, counterburrowing.
Logan closed his eyes. They’d be right, so he wasn’t going to say anything.
