Sam talked to be about marriage
Who: Derpy Hooves and Applejack
When: Early June
Where: Deryn’s place
What: Chatting, making cookies
Rating/Status: Low. These two don't even swear. XD
Status: Complete!
AJ had agreed to come over this week and teach Deryn how to make the cookies that she’d brought to work the week before. The little blonde girl expected it to be a pretty fun learning experience, and so had dutifully cleaned up her kitchen a bit before her friend arrived. Thank goodness for dishwashers, or else she wouldn’t get anything done! Slippery, soapy dishes were definitely not her friend.
AJ showed up on Deryn’s doorstep carrying a bag of supplies. She was looking forward to some girl time with one of her best friends. She rang the bell, shifting the bag to her opposite hip, then tugged out her cell phone to check her messages in the minute before Deryn answered the door.
AJ knew her well enough to know that Deryn DID take a minute to answer the door. If she went running for it (like she was often prone to do), she’d trip over something and that’d be the end of that.
These days she walked whenever she remembered.
“Hey!” She greeted with a wide smile once she opened the door up for AJ.
“Hey.” AJ said, locking her screen and pocketing her phone while she turned up to look at her friend. “How are you?” She asked, a grin now resident on her features. She leaned forward to wrap an arm around her friend in a quick hug. “Ready to bake?”
Yay hugs! Yay baking! “Oh yeah,” Deryn said, rolling back on the balls of her feet happily. Really, she shouldn’t do that - one of these days it would end in disaster. “I even cleaned the kitchen.” And then she was leading the way in, humming happily.
AJ grinned as she followed her friend into the kitchen. She set the bag down on the counter once they were both inside. “It looks nice!” Not that she’d ever seen it that messy. Had she? AJ had cooked in worse, for sure. “Now... shall we get right down to it?”
It wasn’t usually that messy! If anything it was always pretty clean only because Deryn broke so many dishes that she had to constantly clean things up. It was almost as much a blessing for her kitchen as it was a burden. Probably, she should start buying plastic plates. But the ceramic ones were so pretty.
“Yep! What do we need?” Deryn wasn’t the cleverest of girls, but she had a plan to make sure AJ had her hands full before she brought up any real conversation.
“A big mixing bowl, and a spoon, and some measuring cups.” AJ said, starting to unpack the bag. Oats, Oat flour, Yogurt, Applesauce...
Deryn grabbed everything that was needed, setting it all down onto the counter before rolling up her sleeves and washing her hands. “I think I got a new babysitting job. Probably.”
“Oh, really?” AJ asked, moving to the sink after Deryn to wash her own hands. “Weren’t you watching that little girl? Alice?”
“Yeaaaahhhhh,” she really drug that word out, didn’t she? “But they moved, so...” she shrugged. “But I met a man at the part when I was watching her. And he and his wife need help, so that’s good!”
“Oh, that’s too bad.” AJ said, frowning just slightly. That was a shame. Deryn seemed happy watching the girl. “I hope they gave you a good severance package.” She was kinda teasing. Kinda. She started to measure out ingredients and put them in the bowl.
“That’s wonderful. How often are you going to sit for him? Just, some weekends and stuff?” She asked, holding out the oat flour.
“They did.” A very nice bonus, in fact. But still, she’d been getting used to all that extra money. “I had an interview. I’m supposed to meet with his wife I think. And uhhm.. mostly weekdays. But I can swing it at the Market, you know? It practically coordinates itself!” She giggled over that.
“Oh, yeah. You’re just there for set up and tear down, right?” AJ asked as the two of them mixed up the cookies and she showed Deryn how to roll the dough into little circles, and then in the sugar. “It’s a good kid? Do you know? Or... more than one kid?” She added. AJ wasn’t interested in providing child care. She’d had to do enough of that with Applebloom.
“Mostly. And some other stuff.” Deryn kind of did whatever at the Market. Whatever was needed. She busied herself with rolling the little not-yet cookies in sugar. “I dunno. Just one kid. Younger. Can’t be bad yet!”
“Yeah! I mean, that all depends. I think Applebloom was a handful from the start,” AJ teased a little, breaking into a grin. “I’m sure I was the perfect daughter from the get-go, though. I’m sure Mac could tell me either way, but I like thinkin’ what I’m thinkin’.” They arranged the dough on the cookie sheets, then AJ put them into the oven.
Deryn only smiled over that. She was sure AJ had gotten into plenty of trouble in her time. So had Deryn -- but most of it had been injury related. She only shook her head, then moved to rummage through the fridge for something for them to drink.
“Sam talked to be about marriage,” she said, after a beat.
AJ gasped. “GET OUT! When’s the date? Where’s the ring?” She asked, rapid fire, breaking into a grin.
“We’re not going to do it,” Deryn actually gave a look that wasn’t a smile, more an amused reproach. “Some of his friends are, and you did, and he felt like he should too, just because of that.” She shrugged, handed over a bottle of water for AJ. “I don’t want to just coz everyone else is.”
AJ accepted the water, but her smile fell a bit. "Oh? But that's not why you'd be doing it, is it? You two love each other, right?"
“Well, sure.” Deryn gave a very ‘well duhhhh’ sort of face. “But the only reason he thought of it was coz everyone else did it.” She laughed and sipped her own bottle of water. “And anyway, we don’t even live together or anything. And I don’t really care about getting married anyway.” Deryn liked things more simple than all that.
“Does it really matter where he got the idea?” AJ asked. “I’m sure the two of you would make an amazing couple. I mean, long-term. You already make an amazing couple in the here and now!” She grinned, then sipped. “He’s a good man. Sam. He and John are good friends.”
“He is a good man. And we do.” She grinned at that, but then shrugged, spreading her fingers wide, as if to say she didn’t know or care one way or the other. “Someday maybe. But no time soon. It’s nice how it is. We both agree so it must be true!”
“Well, as long as you’re happy.” AJ said, breaking into a bright grin. “And as long as you don’t mind that I’ll continue to ask,” she added, a teasing tone in her voice. Then she bent down to check on the cookies. “Ooh, they’re just about perfect! Do you have a potholder to pull the sheets out of the oven?”
