It was a rare day lately that Percy got out of work early enough to benefit from the wonderful and free services that the state and county provided -- namely, the library. Which was a bit of a shame, because he very much liked reading, and was getting a little wary about the amount of shelf space he had left. Certainly he couldn’t just keep purchasing books at the rate he had been, or else they’d take over the entire home.
Luckily, he’d managed the entire weekend off --which was good, he had a lot of thinking to do still -- as well as some research. Which was why he was now standing in the library. The books on law were clearly not as often checked out as some, but that didn’t mean they weren’t useful. Likewise for the section on business.
“Percy?” Hermione said, sneaking around a corner and breaking into a smile at the sight of Ron’s older brother. She’d always gotten on rather well with Percy, considering they had a lot of tastes and opinions that were similar. She hadn’t seen him in a while, though, and was pleasantly surprised when she lifted her head and saw him wandering about in the library. “Hi! I thought that was you.”
“Oh!” Percy, despite his surprise, was able to keep his tone library proper. Of course he was. He rose his eyebrows a little and shifted the stack of books in his arms. “Hermione! Hello. Fancy meeting you here.” But really, it probably wasn’t all that surprising for either of them.
Hermione’s voice was nearly always at a library volume. And actually always at the library. Obviously. “Not really,” she offered, grinning sheepishly. “You’re more likely to bump into me here than anywhere else. What about you? I figured you’d have all the law books you need by now,” she added, turning to look at the shelf. They had an amazing collection of law encyclopedias here at the library.
“I have quite a few,” Percy admitted with a fond sort of smile. He’d always liked Hermione, she was oddly easy to speak with on some matters. Honestly, he felt a bit bad that they weren’t better friends, considering they sort of had the potential to be. “But I’m afraid even I don’t own all of them. Yet.”
"Must be a pricey thing to collect," she added, somewhat correcting herself, as she reached forward to pull a book off the shelf. The way she handled the book might prove to some to be an interesting change--though probably not to Percy. She touched the book gently, lifting it from the shelf with reverence and respect, what she truly believed it deserved. But it didn't stick. She frowned slightly and put the book back, as if she decided she was unworthy. "I changed my major." She said, softly.
“I believe you told me that on the Net,” Percy murmured, watching the way she handled the books. She seemed a bit sad about it. “From Law to -- something to do with space, if I’m not mistaken?”
“Physics,” Hermione added. “Yes. I’m absolutely fascinated by space exploration, and this seems to be a good way to get myself into it.” Her husband had actually already been in space, and not just on the Enterprise. (Hermione considered that cheating a little.) She was, actually, a little sad about it. She’d always had this vision of making changes here and now, until she met Jim. Then it changed to the future. Changes for the benefit of the next generation.
“What about you? How is working for Helen Magnus?”
“Physics, right.” He nodded. It wasn’t an interest of his, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t be interested for her, anyway. “And. Oh. Well. I’m not quite working for her anymore.” He gave an awkward sort of look. “She’s given up the practice and moved. Which is why I’m looking into some different books, since she’s left the place for my coworker and myself.”
“What? Really?” Hermione looked surprised. Confused, a little. “She just... up and left? Well...” That was good news for Percy and his coworker, anyway. “Well, congratulations, then, on starting your own firm?”
“Yes. It was all a bit odd. I don’t know how she could do it, either.” Really, he couldn’t. Percy was nothing if not dedicated, and might never fully understand the decision. “But--yes? Thank you. I suppose we sort of are.” He hugged his books closer to his chest, looking oddly innocent for a moment. “It feels a bit like cheating. Owning my own firm only months after actually becoming a lawyer.”
“Sometimes things just fall into your lap, you know?” Hermione said, trying her best to be supportive. It did sound like a couple of really big changes, and not necessarily ones that should happen so quickly one after the other. But she knew if anyone could handle it, Percy could. The whole Weasley family seemed to be doing really well. Ginny was a star actress, Fred and George owned their own shop, and now Percy was starting his own law firm. It was amazing. “I’ll be sure to come and see you should I need any legal help.”
“Let’s hope you don’t need to visit any time soon then, yes?” Percy wished hardship on no one, even if he could get personal gain from it.
“Oh, yes, fingers crossed,” Hermione said, giving him a smile. “Or, let’s hope that if I do, I’ll need a lawyer for good reasons, and not bad. Like, winning money, or something like that.”
Percy only gave a little smile at that, but nodded anyway. “Yes, exactly that. Good reasons. I’d love to deal with more clients that had those.”
“Your profession would be much more respected if more people needed lawyers for those sorts of reasons,” Hermione said, with a sad smirk. “But anyway, I should let you get back to your research. I’ve got to get home and start something for dinner, too. Grouchy husbands, growling stomachs, never a good combination.”
Percy only smiled at that, since he was by no means the person who cooked in his particular relationship. “Right,” he agreed. “Of course. Well. It’s been lovely speaking with you again. You must tell me how your schooling is going more often.”
If only Percy knew about Hermione’s cooking. Normally they ordered in. Or replicated? On the ship? If that was a thing? “Oh, I will.” Hermione gave him a warm smile. “We should bump into each other more often.” She waved her hand to him, still smiling, then turned to head back to her table and collect her things to go home.
