Harry smiled as he hugged Elaine, and kissed her softly. “Our lives seem blessed to get ever more interesting. So we have a daughter, newly discovered as ‘ours’, and we found each other, newly rediscovered, and we also now have a daughter who is a Dreamer, and who has aged up once, and possibly has a boyfriend. Or a pre-boyfriend? Whatever that is called.”
He sighed. “Our magics are waking up slowly, and so is that of my brother, whose magic is instead a curse, with his newly found girfriend, a mutant superhero type. In the meantime, Orange County goes on it’s merry way, orcs come and go, and life seems only doomed to get better. Mostly.”
He raised an eyebrow at Elaine. “Did I miss anything?”
He was in an odd mood, but not a terrible one.
Elaine smiled softly, and snuggled close to Harry’s side, running her fingers through his hair. “I think that just about covers it,” she said, resting her head on his shoulder. She might have a few cards up her sleeve that she hadn’t played yet, but she had a feeling Harry would approve.
She hugged him, and pressed a kiss to his neck. “Are you all right, Harry?”
He kissed her and nodded, slowly. “I think I am., Despite how things seem, I feel like we, you and I, are making progress as a couple and working together to solve Thomas’s problem. And also as parents. And despite some worries, if Cora has to have a boyfriend at all, Nate seems better than most options.” He sighed and kissed her again. “And I love you.’
“I love you, too,” she said, between kisses. “And I love working with you. I think we make a good team.” She continued stroking his hair, enjoying the closeness, and the comfort in their shared presence. “Cora and I have had some good talks, since the change. I think she’ll be okay.”
He hugged her tight. He felt in a way like some lord of olden times. Sailing his way through troubled seas, and ruling by the edges of his fingernails, but somehow working things out by the grace of gods and life and love. Or something. “Me too.”
Elaine was his steading stone, his home port and point, and she made it all worthwhile. He loved his daughter, newly discovered and all, but it was Elaine who made this journey worth it. “Yeah? Good. She is a good girl, and smart, and growing smarter by the day.”
He breathed in this closeness, and this knowledge and then nodded, mind turning again. “We need to work harder on Thomas, I think. With the return of the powers, he needs... whatever we can do. “ He felt guilty, for having love and luck and not being bereft of the comfort of touch.
“What can we do that won’t be add injury to insult?” Elaine asked softly. “My healing powers have grown, some. On the one hand, I don’t think I can safely touch him; but on the other, I don’t actually need to touch him for what I do. So...if there was a way to somehow redirect the power that binds him...” The ideas were not quite fully formed, yet, and she felt as if she were reaching way outside of her scope of practice, but one could never pioneer new ground from one’s comfort zone. “I wonder if it’s possible to trigger a healing spell while holding a soul-gaze, and what would happen if you did.”
“If we had a circle within a circle, and you could redirect the power, and I soulgazed him...drawing him and the Hunger out of him, then shoved him back, and slammed the circle closed, then the other one... we could trap and then get rid of it?” Harry was still worrying at it.
Harry nodded. “I don’t know. Healing plus magic...” He paused. “Plus Soulfire?”
“
“But can you soulgaze him, here? Or does the fact that you’ve gazed him in your dreams carry over?” If that was the case, Elaine figured she could do it, since she’d never made eye contact with him long enough for a soulgaze in her dreams--that was not the kind of thing a girl would forget, no matter how sketchy her dreams might be. But that would give them a lot narrower window in which to work, because she wouldn’t necessarily be able to do much during the soulgaze.
“None of this really sounds like something we’d be able to go back and try again if we didn’t get it right the first take.”
“No idea, but we can try it.” He nodded, and then grinned at her. “And use your chain, as a conduit for the soulfire, with healing magic to close the circuit and make right what should be.” He slowly nodded as it slid into place in his mind.
“We have to work on it, and maybe test run some healing and soulgaze with us.” Harry grinned at her.
Elaine nodded. The plan might not yet be fully hatched, but it seemed like the pieces were starting to come together. “As much as can be tested, anyway.”
“Yeah. And pray. Maybe just maybe, we can get a little Help, when all goes down. All for Love, after all.” He grinned at her and hummed a few notes. “When it’s love you give...”
She smiled, and ran her fingers through his hair, head nodding to the music that they shared between them. She remembered the voice that had spoken through him, when Luthien sang, and she felt hope take root in her being. There was really no way they could do something like this on their own, she realized. But they weren’t alone. Not by any stretch of the imagination.
He hugged her tight. “So now we should go work some figures in the workroom, when we can move. And then... call Thomas.” He kissed her nose and her lips, something solid settling in him. He felt that this would work. He felt it with all of himself.
“Yes,” she said, nuzzling his neck and breathing him in. “When we can move.”
