Azula woke up feeling cold. This was a feeling she was unaccustomed to, especially since the day before had been spent in the sun and among market stalls and finally the beach.
She crawled out of bed, shivering, and drew up the heat inside her to warm herself up. Except nothing happened. She looked at her hands, and tried moving through bending forms. Nothing happened. It was as though part of her had been ripped from her heart.
She wanted to panic, she wanted to scream, but instead she just slipped to the floor and rubbed at her face. She decided not to tell Ty Lee. She could panic later. She supposed that meant she was growing.
But she really wanted to panic right now.
Ty Lee woke up soon after Azula left the bed. She stretched and sighed, not at all disturbed by anything. She felt amazing. She slipped out of bed, blinking at Azula. “Are you stretching?” She asked. Why would Azula be on the floor?
“Y-yes, I am.” she got to her feet, and walked to the window to close it. She felt way too cold. “Was there anything special you wanted to do today, or should we just wander around and sightsee?”
“Sightseeing!” Ty Lee said, cheerfully. “That sounds like the most fun!” She hugged Azula, rubbing her arm. “You’re chilly.” She sounded worried.
“A bit chilly outside.” She turned and kissed Ty Lee. “I know how we can warm up before we head out....”
Ty Lee almost pressed the issue, but in the end she just laughed and let it go. Azula would tell her what was going on or she wouldn’t, and Ty Lee was too happy to care. “Mmmmm, but we should have breakfast first, or our bellies will grumble the whoooole time.” She grinned at Azula and bounced over to the little refrigerator in their room. “We still have part of dinner left over.”
She watched Ty Lee bend over, looking pleased with herself. She came over. “We should finish that. Lets heat it up.” she’d feel better with food in her.
“Ok!” Ty Lee chirped, handing Azula her plastic container of food, before taking her own over to the microwave. “Wish we still had some of that wine left, that would be delicious.”
Azula walked over to the bar and opened it. “We can make do with some of this. I’m pretty sure we’re legal here.” Maybe. It didn’t matter, she’d bribe them.
Ty Lee nodded and pulled her food out of the microwave, settling back on the bed. “It’s not like they cared enough to give us a room without a minibar, so oh well.”
“Precisely. We might as well enjoy it.” Azula laughed and poured them some wine. She carried the glasses over and sat down. If she focused on Ty Lee, she could ignore the ice in her stomach.
Maybe this meant she was normal again. She didn’t know how she felt about that, except something was missing. So she decided to fill the hole with Ty Lee.
Ty Lee started eating, eying Azula’s still-cold food. She took her glass of wine and sipped it. She wondered if she should have heated it up for Azula. Had she made a mistake?
She kissed Ty Lee, then brought her food over to the microwave, eyedarting once her back was turned.
Ty Lee frowned, but didn’t say anything. She wondered if Azula had lost her bending, somehow. It was much faster to heat food the way she normally did it.
She pushed the buttons, then stared at the microwave like it was too slow. And also betraying her. “Maybe we could go on a sailboat.”
“A sailboat would be nice.” Ty Lee agreed. If Azula wasn’t making a big deal about losing her bending, Ty Lee wouldn’t, either. “The sea is very beautiful.”
“I think I’d like that. That’s what we’ll do. We’ll rent a sailboat, and sail very far, and then -” The Microwave beeped, and she removed her food. “I think you can fill in the blank.”
Ty Lee giggled. “I think I can fill in any spaces you think need filling.” She winked at Azula and motioned to the spot on the bed next to her. “Come sit with me.”
Azula blushed slightly, and then leaned in and kissed her as she sat down. “I never dreamed you could be this naughty.”
Ty Lee grinned and kissed her back. “Well, maybe if you’d been nicer to me in the dreams You would have known.”
Azula frowned a little. "I.. I know. I thought that if I didn't... I thought you'd leave. It was the worst thing that could happen to me, you and Mai leaving."
Ty Lee wasn’t entirely sure what Azula was talking about, but the dreams didn’t matter. “I’ll never leave you, Azula. You’re not the same person in the dreams at all.”
“I was. I was.” Azula grabbed her arm, a little too hard. “It’s in me to be that person, I just.. I just choose not to be her.”
Ty Lee yelped a little and pulled back. "That hurt." She rubbed her arm. "It's okay to want to be mean sometimes, but you aren't like her where it matters."
Azula looked shocked, and pulled her hand away. She got to her feet. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean...”
“Azula, it’s okay.” Ty Lee stood up too, and went to put her arm around Azula. “I know you didn’t mean it.”
“I’m always afraid I might hurt you. That the dreams will trigger something in me. That... that madness that consumed me.”
Ty Lee just hugged Azula. It was all she could really do. She didn’t have an answer. She didn’t know what to say. She just knew that she wanted to hug Azula until Azula wasn’t afraid anymore.
“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me,” Azula whispered, leaning into the hug. And just like that, she wasn’t so bothered by the bending, or her dreams. Just like that, she felt hope and happiness. Just like that, because Ty Lee was everything to her.
Ty Lee kissed her neck. “I love you. You’re the world to me.”
