WHO: Martha Jones and Mickey Smith
WHAT: A first date and talking about the dreams.
WHEN: Backdated: Saturday, June 8th. Early Evening
WHERE: A Restaurant
RATING: Family Friendly
STATUS: Complete
Martha had been looking forward to this date with Mickey ever since they’d started talking about going out on a date. From the first time Mickey had shown up in the ER, after he’d cut his arm, she had thought he was attractive and then when he’d approached her and Molly at the bar, she’d thought he was really very nice and funny. They’d been texting on and off ever since, trying to figure out a time that worked for the both of them since Martha didn’t have a regular nine to five schedule and finally they’d managed to work it out when Martha told him she was free Saturday. They had then decided on a place and Martha was currently waiting outside the restaurant. She had dressed in a pair of black dressy pants and white sleeveless, v-necked top and the red leather jacket from her dreams, which had shown up, hanging on the back of her bedroom door a few months earlier.
Mickey had taken time to take care of his appearance instead of just going out in wrinkled jeans and a t-shirt. He picked out some nice slacks and a nicer shirt. He thought highly of Martha and he wanted to make sure he made a good impression. Much better than appearing in the ER after getting scraped up by a brick wall. She was funny and beautiful and Mickey hadn’t had a crush on a girl lately and had a lot of endless first meetings at different bars, but something had clicked between the two of them. So, he parked his car in the nearby lot and made his way over to the restaurant, his eyes searching for Martha, and a smile appeared when he spotted her. His pace moved quicker as he crossed over to her and held his hand up in greeting, “You look lovely.”
Martha smiled when she saw Mickey and waved back, “Thank you. You look good yourself.” While she had been somewhat nervous before, now that Mickey was there, she found that she was slowly beginning to relax. Maybe part of it was because of the dreams he’d mentioned on Valarnet a few days earlier, which would give them a topic to talk about instead of trying to make small talk. Either way, she was extremely happy to see him, “Should we go inside?” She asked, gesturing towards the door of the restaurant.
“Of course,” he replied with a smile and walked over to the door before she got to it and opened it so she could enter. The dreams were definitely interesting and knowing that she had experienced some of the same things made him want to pick her brain. There were so many people that apparently knew him from something else and he couldn’t figure out where this weird alien stuff was going to lead. Once they stepped into the restaurant he went up to the hostess stand and put their name in.
Martha didn’t think anyone had ever actually opened a door like that for her before. Sure, people had held doors open for her at the hospital and at other places, but no one had ever done it quite like Mickey had. She thanked him as she walked past and waited until he had put a name in before she said anything else, “Did you find the place alright?” She’d been there once since she’d moved out to Orange County and wasn’t actually sure how long Mickey had been living there.
“Yeah, I’ve got a great GPS to help me out,” he admitted with a chuckle. He had been in Orange County for long enough that he was getting pretty good at figuring out how to navigate in each city. Each was a little different though so you had to make sure to commit each to memory. It was going to be about a 20 minute wait so he moved them over to a pair of seats that opened up as they were talking. He let her sit down first before joining her and smiling slightly, “What about you? And are you the kind of doctor that needs to be on call? I’m trying to make sure you won’t run out on me if the date gets bad with a fake work call.”
“Oh good. Wouldn’t have wanted you to get lost.” Martha followed Mickey over to the two chairs and sat then watched as he sat as well, “Not tonight. Sometimes I’m off, but on call. Tonight though, I’m completely off. Unless there’s some huge emergency, you have me all to yourself.” She laughed as she heard the words come out of her mouth and blushed ever so slightly, “Well, you know what I mean.”
The comment brought a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth before it turned into a full-fledged smile and he let out a deep chuckle at her comment. He couldn’t deny that it hadn’t possibly crossed his mind, but he wouldn’t have said it like that, “Well well, don’t I feel special. But I’m glad you’re not on call because that would make for an interesting first date story if you ran out on me to save another man.”
“Oh man, can you tell that I haven’t been out on a date in a while?” She asked, smiling. She didn’t mind telling Mickey things like that, because he didn’t seem like the kind of guy who would start to think something was wrong with her for not having been on a date in awhile, “Like I said, unless there’s something like an alien invasion or explosion, I shouldn’t get called in.” It was almost as if she was trying to temp fate.
“Well, don’t say alien invasion because I’m still having PTSD from my dreams. And don’t worry about the not having been on a date in a while. I don’t think you’re failing miserably just yet, so I’ll stick around to enjoy your company,” he knew that the date was going to go well and he was glad that she was open with him. It sucked when you did a blind date because everything is just so awkward, but being with Martha was fairly comfortable.
Martha’s eyes widened slightly at the first part, “Crap, I’m sorry. Yeah, the dreams must be pretty intense, huh? In my first one, the hospital I was working in got transported to the moon and there were these humanoid looking rhinos called the Judoon.” Despite having dreamt about Daleks, a guy who had been turned into a pig and a guy who had changed his molecular structure, she still thought the Judoon were the strangest creatures yet. “That’s good, cause I wanted to enjoy your company for a little while longer too.”
“It was just unexpected. I mean dreaming about aliens isn’t that big of a deal, but to find out that other people have experienced them and that they could possibly be something real, it’s odd. I thought I was just having normal dreams, but this was not normal at all. Some people sound really excited about it too, how do you feel about them?” He wasn’t able to listen to her answer because the hostess called out their name and he held out his hand to help her up as they made their way to follow the hostess to their table.
She had been about to answer when the hostess called their name and she smiled as she took his hand. His hand felt nice in hers and she found that she didn’t want to let go, but it would be difficult to maneuver around the other tables if they were holding hands, so she followed him as he followed the hostess and they were finally led to a table.
He pulled his chair out for her and helped push her in when she sat down. His grandmother had raised him to have great manners, which he was always grateful for when he had a date. He picked up the menu and tried to figure out what in the world he wanted, “Sorry, you didn’t get to answer my question. I feel like restaurants just sense when you’re in an important conversation while waiting and then they want you to get seated.”
When he pulled her chair out for her, Martha couldn’t keep the grin off her face and thanked him as he pushed her seat in. She didn’t think she’d ever gone out with a guy who had actually pulled out her chair before. That was just one more brownie point for Mickey. First the door and now her chair. She picked up her own menu and shook her head, “I can answer it now though. Unless there was a time limit on my answer. If that’s the case then I’d like a do-over.”
“No time limit, so don’t worry. As long as we don’t sit here until they try to kick us out, I will listen,” he commented with a chuckle. They were stopped momentarily by the waitress introducing herself and getting their drink orders. Once she wandered off he made a playful face and looked back over at her, “Alright, I think we’re okay for now. Don’t mind me if I look at the menu while you talk.” He wanted to figure out his order quickly so then he could pay more attention to their conversation.
Martha placed her drink order then started looking over the menu as well as she answered Mickey’s earlier question, “I was pretty weirded out by the first one, but they’ve gotten more and more interesting and I’m actually looking forward to them.” It had been a month or so, maybe two, since the last dream she’d had and she wondered why she hadn’t had another one yet, “The second one I had, I met William Shakespeare.” She couldn’t help but grin at that. It still excited her to tell people that..
“William Shakespeare? Well, that is damn impressive. I just got eaten by a trash bin and turned into an alien for a little while. Maybe I’ll dream of something cool, but you’re definitely winning right now on the dream front,” he countered with a smile. If something like that would happen in his dreams then he wouldn’t have a problem dreaming about them, but so far it wasn’t interesting like that. There was a lot of running involved and people coming after them.
“It was pretty cool,” She certainly wasn’t about to tell Mickey that William Shakespeare had flirted with her, but she would tell the rest of the story, “We also defeated these witches that were trying to use him to bring back their species or something along those lines.” More than once now her and The Doctor had either saved the world or saved a large number of lives and that made her feel a tiny bit important, “I’m sure you’ll have better dreams. I mean, if you travel with The Doctor, you’re bound to.”
“Witches and aliens and Shakespeare? This sounds kind of unbelievable. I’m kind of curious to see what continues to happen with The Doctor, is it true that he keeps looking different? One girl said that her Doctor doesn’t look like the one that’s around now,” he was extremely confused by that idea and he was curious if he and Martha knew the same version of The Doctor or not.
Martha laughed and nodded, “I know it sounds insane. I’d think so too if I hadn’t had the dreams myself.” The waitress came back then with their drinks because she could respond to his question and asked if they were ready to order. “Are you ready?” She looked to Mickey, making sure he was ready before she placed hers.
“Sure,” he nodded before waiting while she placed her order to put his in and handed over his menu. When the waitress left he lifted up his glass to take a drink of water, “And don’t worry, we must all be insane then. I guess I was waiting for something crazy to happen in my life since it’s been pretty quiet lately.”
Martha placed her order then waited until the waitress left and nodded, “Yeah, nothing too crazy ever really happened in my life until I moved here either. Oh, don’t be surprised if you start to notice really strange things happening that no one outside of the OC seems to notice.” She still didn’t understand how no one outside of the OC knew about the Blue Flu or when the OC went all Alice in Wonderland, “And to answer your question, the Doctor you were talking to is the one I know from my dreams. There are other versions of him here too.”
“Wait, what do you mean I’ll start noticing things that no one else will notice? That is a little more than creepy. And so, the Doctor in the post is the one you know. He doesn’t look like the Doctor that I know in my dreams. And I know someone else said that her Doctor doesn’t seem to be here. Confusing, definitely confusing,” he commented with a small furrow in his brow.Trying to get his mind around everything may take a while, but at least it was starting to make sense. Well, as much sense as a time traveling shape shifting person could make. He was never going to complain that his life was boring ever again.
“How long have you actually been living here?” Martha asked, wanting to get an idea of what exactly had happened during the time that Mickey had been in the OC. She nodded in response to the questions about The Doctor, “I’ve met at least three different men since I’ve been here who are all a different version of The Doctor.”
“I’ve been here for god...8 years? Did college here and been working at my job for about three or four years now. I’ve completely lost track of time,” he admitted with a bit of a laugh. Time just seemed to blend together for him and he honestly couldn’t believe it had actually been that long. It only seemed like yesterday that he came out for college, “And three different men? Wow, that is impressive. Apparently everyone is The Doctor and we should just call it good.”
“Eight years? So, did you notice a few months back when most of the OC went on an acid trip?” Martha had seen some pretty crazy stuff during those few days. Buildings had turned into giant mushrooms and there had been giant talking flowers and she recalled someone writing on Valarnet that their car had flown away. “No one outside the OC seemed to notice as far as I know. Can’t find anything on it on-line anywhere.” She knew how crazy it sounded and had she not seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn’t have believed it either.
“No.....? I think that I would have definitely remembered if I had seen the OC on an acid trip. Not completely sure what you mean by that, but I think I would have remembered. But maybe it’s just the group of us that get weird dreams also get weird experiences. And what about you? How long have you been here?” He asked as he took a sip of her water. This conversation was getting a little strange and confusing, but something odd was going on once he found this network anyway, so maybe it was all connected.
“I don’t know. It was pretty hard to miss. It was like The OC turned into Wonderland.” Martha didn’t understand how it worked, but somehow certain people appeared to miss some of the stuff that happened while others wound up smack dab in the middle of the crazy, “I’ve been here for almost a year. On Valarnet since the end of December. Like you, I didn’t start to notice anything out of the ordinary until I joined.” She took a sip of her drink to let everything settle for Mickey.
“Apparently we need to get off this network and our lives wouldn’t be half as crazy. Who knew that going on the internet could change your world like this,” he pointed out with a smirk as the waitress brought out their meals and placed them in front of them. He thanked her before lifting his glass to Martha, “A toast to new opportunities? And maybe a toast to The Doctor since that’s given us even more to talk about on our date. I just hope that things don’t continue to be this crazy.”
Over the last few months, Martha had wondered what would happen if someone left the Network or moved out of the OC. Would the dreams stop? Truthfully, she wanted to find out what else happened in her dreams, so she was planning on staying in the OC for now. When the waitress brought out their food and Mickey lifted his glass to toast, she smiled and did the same, “To The Doctor and new opportunities.” So far this date was going quite well and she hoped that it continued that way so that perhaps there would be more in the future.
