So tell me, Nurse Lee, what made you decide to apply for a position you didn’t even know existed?
Who: Magius and Yuna
Where: Sunburst Medical Clinic
What: A job interview
When: Thursday, 06/06
Warnings/Rating: PG-13 for brief discussion of medical subjects
Status complete
Yuna stood across the street from the clinic, hands clasped to her chest. She was nervous, but she’d done her research and heard a few things about the place from other nurses. This was the place she wanted to work at - the place she had to work at. For reasons she understood - it was doing good things in the community - and reasons she didn’t quite understand yet. She just had a feeling, and she knew she needed to ride it out. She wanted to help the most people she could, in a place where she could make a difference.
Sunburst Medical Clinic wasn’t much to look at on the outside - it was a low slung building, somewhat worn-looking from the outside. But it was clean and the sign was new, and it looked like it had many rooms. Hopefully that meant it also had room for a new nurse.
“I can do this. I have to believe in myself,” She whispered to herself. Then she nodded, clutched at the resume that had previously been hugged against her chest, and entered.
Inside, it was the usual controlled chaos of a clinic, with people moving to and fro and patients waiting to be seen in a waiting room as a nurse clerk watched over the whole mess. Another was on the phone, taking notes, as yet another interviewed a new patient with new questions. The nurse in charge’s eyes caught on Yuna and she raised an eyebrow, a small warm smile playing on her face. She nodded to her, inviting her forward.
It was busier than the place she'd previously worked, but that didn't bother her at all. She wanted to be in a place exactly like this. She glanced around the room a bit, then smiled at the nurse in charge and stepped up to the counter.
"Hello. I know you're very busy, but I was wondering... if you had any positions open." Yuna's smiled widened a bit at the question. She was really hopeful for a good response.
The nurse blinked, but smiled. “Not sure how you lucked into this, but you did. The girl who came in to be interviewed threw up on her first patient, and left. We have a rather immediate opening.” She smirked. “If you have the time to fill out paperwork, have all the papers you need with you, and can take the time to interview right now, then you might just have a chance.”
Yuna didn't want to look too happy over the other woman's misfortune. She tilted her head to the side, pondering quickly if she should step away from this and allow the previous applicant a second chance. It only took her three seconds to resolve her feelings on it, "Thank you, I definitely have the time right now. It would be a pleasure to fill out any paperwork you have and interview today."
She held out her hand with the resume in it, "Do you need to see this? I also have my credentials."
“Excellent.” The nurse took the resume and nodded. “I’ll take anything you brought for the possible job now. And look it over, as well as show it to the senior doctor on duty, in...” She glanced at the clock, “ten minutes.” That was when Doctor Magius would be in his office as opposed to seeing patients. “IN turn, I’d like you to fill these out.” She handed over several forms asking questions about ethics, availability, medical history, and situational problems.
The various papers were carefully taken in hand, and Yuna handed over her own set of paperwork in turn. She nodded dutifully to the woman, and picked up a nearby clipboard she could use to fill out the questions on the paperwork with.
She was sure to thank the woman again before retreating to a chair to fill everything out.
It was just over ten minutes later when the nurse came out and called Yuna’s name, raising a hand to beckon her to the nearest door. “Follow me, please. Doctor Magius will see you now.” And she led the woman through the door and then down a hall away from the other doctors and nurses, to two doors. One, open, showed an examination room, while the other was closed with a simple name tag on it. ‘Doctor Magius’ was written on it. And it was on this door that the nurse knocked. “Doctor? She’s here.”
“Then send her in, thank you, nurse.” The nurse smiled, opened the door for Yuna, and then turned to go.
The office, when she entered, was a small one, but lit by cool lighting, the kind that didn’t feel like the bulb would burn you, and the walls were covered with pictures and with notes. Doctor Magius stood next to a desk, which was facing a wall, and he smiled as he extended a hand toward her. He towered at 6’8”, and was thin, but muscular in a button up shirt and business pants. His hair showed some black still, but was mostly a silver-gray color and his face showed lines along it, laugh lines mostly, though enough of the other kind were there, too.
“Hello, miss, please, sit, and make yourself at home.”
It was hard not to get curious about the sights around her in the office. He had lots of things to attract her attention, and she did a quick look around before taking his hand and firmly shaking it. She'd been taught that future employers liked a firm handshake.
He was much taller than her, and looked like the years had been a good mixture of happy and sad. Her smile warmed a bit as she took a seat, "Thank you for seeing me so quickly. I know your day must be filled with appointments."
He met her handshake with a firm one, but not a challenging one. He was no alpha male, not most of the time, anyway. Here, he just was out to help. “You’re very welcome. This position needs to be filled, and I do try to take some time to be open to people wanting to see me outside the examination room.” This wing had just been renovated, hence the no one else operating here. Magius, with his quirks, had moved right in. He saw most of the Dreamers who came here, and only Faiza saw more.
He settled to his seat, facing her, her paperwork on his desk and smiled to her, warmth in his eyes and mouth. “So tell me, Nurse Lee, what made you decide to apply for a position you didn’t even know existed, at a clinic you’ve never worked in, with doctors you don’t know?”
Yuna laughed a bit, and clutched her hands together on her lap, "I know it must seem a little silly, or random. I was working in another walk-in clinic before - I know it's on my resume so you know already - but it wasn't..."
She trailed off, trying to find the words she wanted. His smile and his demeanor had instantly warmed her insides and most of her nervousness had disappeared. She just wanted to be honest, "I suppose all clinics and most medical environments are a bit like this. Medicine becomes some kind of impersonal assembly line. I don't want to treat people like what's wrong with them is just another co-pay to me, or like we need to rush them out to make room for the next person. It's just... they're sick, they're not well, or they're injured. Sometimes, something worse is going on. I want to feel like I'm allowed to care. I want to really help."
"And I heard," She continued, after looking down at her hands for a moment, "That this place might be a little different. I'd been researching around. I think some of the doctors here are trying to make a difference. You could say I had a gut feeling, too."
Magius leaned forward, caught from the first by her seeming honesty and honest way of speaking, her saying what could easily be taken as offensive, or naive by many career doctors, and more, saying things he himself felt and had felt for decades. Damn. Had he actually managed to luck into the perfect candidate just like that? He made himself draw a breath and nod to her words as she spoke, and made himself consider that she would need to show she could do standard and simple things, but if so... damn. Yes. he felt a surge of confidence as she spoke and as she finished, and he nodded again a warmer smile spreading across his face, against all attempts to deny it.
When he spoke, his voice carried that warmth as well, though it was still professional. “I would say, Yuna, that you are a brave woman. And I would say that your passion shows you well. I would say that you seem to have a professional and a honest mien to you, both things I require, and I would say, quite simply, that you have come to the right place.”
He was sure, just that soon, even as he knew he had to try her out.
“What are your hour restrictions and how is your travel situation?” He suddenly did not recall if she had put those items on her information.
"I really want to work here. If you only have a position open at night, then I can be nocturnal. If you need me here in the morning, then I can do that just as easily. I'm very open, really, though I'd like at least one day off."
She tucked some hair behind her ear and looked at him. Her smile was warm, but there was enough steel behind her eyes to prove her determination about this. As for the travel situation, "I have my own car. It's very reliable and I try to take care of it so that it doesn't break down. I like to travel and long drives don't scare me."
It was with a twinkle in his eyes that he met her stare and smile head on, his determination equal to hers. “Well, as I am not nocturnal, that won't be a problem. I do come here fairly early, and so I will need you to do the same. The position is attending Physician’s assistant, mine, to be exact, and unless a client is uncomfortable with it, you will be in many sessions with clients with me. Some clients are sensitive due to the nature of their conditions, of course, so we respect that, but otherwise, you will be learning at my side.”
Magius smiled to her. “If you do come to work the same hours as me in time, you will sometimes be on call as well, for both this clinic and the women’s shelter.”
It sounded like the kind of position where she could really stretch the limits of what her professional rank allowed, and help the most of amount of people possible. Yuna never dreamed she'd get the chance he was offering her, and she tried not to gasp in surprise as he spoke.
When he was finished, she was almost stunned into silence. She pointed at her chest, as if to ask him if he meant to be speaking to her, "I'm... I can't believe this, the job you're intending to offer me sounds wonderful. You've put an amazing amount of faith in someone who only just walked through your door."
Magius didn’t hesitate to answer her, the answer clear in his mind. “You speak with passion, compassion, honesty,. and drive. I respect all of those things. And, to tell the truth, as an assistant to me, you will either prove yourself, or quickly show your lack of fitness for the job. I hope it’s the former.” He smiled, honest and warm.
“I believe we should encourage people to reach outside their limits, to become more and we should get them chances to do so.”
"It's just so amazing, because I've been feeling so restless. Have you ever had that feeling like what you're doing just isn't enough? I constantly feel like I could be doing more," Yuna said, softly. It was almost like she was reflecting on something that had nothing to do with her career. She shook her head to clear it, and grinned at him.
"I want to rise to the challenge. I will. When can I start?"
Magius nodded. he worked as a doctor, rode his horse, cooked his own meals, and worked on metalcraft every day, not to mention exercising and now studying magic. He understood being driven to do more, oh yes.
“Now you have the chance to do more. And you can start either tomorrow, or Monday, if you would rather have the weekend to do other things.” Magius smiled wider.
Yuna pondered this. She didn't have anything better to do than be here helping. The rest of her evening was enough time to prepare, "I can start tomorrow. The weekend will be a good time to learn quickly, it will be busier then."
Magius nodded then and extended a hand to her again. “Then welcome aboard. The charge nurse will start the official paperwork. and you can start tomorrow morning at eight in advance of it being done. It should be complete by Monday anyway.”
She rose to her feet and shook his hand again, beaming with happiness, "I can't wait. Thank you again, so much. I can't thank you enough for giving me this opportunity."
“You’re welcome, Yuna. I look forward to working together with you. And I hope this place is a good fit for you and for what you want to do.” He had a good feeling, and he hoped it was right. She had the qualities he was looking for in his personal assistant. And that could make a lot of differences.
