Laura didn’t need her enhanced senses to know that something happened in Logan’s room when the powers came back on. She was on her way in to comfort Velma after he passed, and the sudden rush of her senses returning stunned her for a moment.

When they were clear, she could hear Velma sniffling, and the smell of stale beer and whiskey assaulted her nose. She exhaled sharply, like she could blow the scent out if she snorted hard enough. She could also hear Logan’s heart beating again. It was a huge relief.

For Velma, this shit had turned around quick enough to qualify as a full-fledged breakdown. She’d been dealing with losing one of the few men she’d ever met who was worth anything, and then there had been those minutes that felt like he’d been gone for two years.

He’d started to sit up, his color looked better, his breathing got less labored, and Velma had to turn and leave the room. She was curled in a chair, hands shaking, bawling. She was so damn happy, and she’d been so damn crushed, and it was just too much.

Laura watched as Velma came out crying. She went to the older woman’s side, taking her hand gently. This was all too much. Laura could understand how she felt. She stroked Velma’s hand softly.

Velma didn’t notice Laura at first; she seemed to appear out of nowhere. Eventually her brain caught up with her eyes, though, and she took a thick breath. “Laura.” God, she’d been on her way to the phone when the ... whatever had happened. “Shit. I ... he looks better.” She wiped her eyes, still not entirely able to put a sentence together.

Laura nodded and hugged her. “I hear him. I think he’ll be okay.” She petted Velma, stroking her arm softly. “I’m so glad. I don’t know what happened, exactly, but I’m glad he’s not dead, that he’s getting better.”

“I’m sorry,” Velma managed, trying to compose herself a little better. “Sorry, I was going to call, but he said you knew.” She felt sick from all the crying, and took a breath, leaning on Logan’s daughter. “I should have called, I was just a fuckin’ mess.”

“It’s okay. I’ve been kind of hanging around.” Laura didn’t want to admit she’d let herself in and listened to Velma and Logan talking. “It’s all okay, everything’s going to be okay.” She hugged Velma, hoping it would help.

It didn’t bother Velma. It was Logan’s daughter, for Christ’s sake. “Don’t mean to be so stupid,” she managed, taking comfort in having another body there. “He went, and I ... God, it felt like five years, and I was crying, and finally I went to get the phone. Call you and Neena and find Eli. He popped his claws, and then he opened his eyes and yelled my name.” She was shaking, even remembering it.

Laura nodded, snuggling against Velma. “I heard. Everything was so loud and stinky.” She made a face. She was so relieved. Her hands were shaking a little, too. “Oh, I’m so happy, Velma.” She squeezed the older woman tight.

That did get a laugh out of Velma, though it was a weak one. “I forgot you got his nose.” She rubbed her eyes, shaking still. “Is this how you felt about Jubilee? Logan said you were thinking about moving.” It wasn’t a terrible idea. And yet she really wasn’t sure about if it would work or not. “I’d ... I don’t know, I can’t go through this again.” Never mind Laura or Neena or Eli, if there was no two-minute reprieve.

Laura nodded. “Yeah, this is how I feel about-” She gasped. “I have to call her Velma, what if she’s a vampire again?” That would be just awful! Laura hugged Velma one last time and pulled her phone out to call Jubilee.

Oh, fucking hell. Velma instantly felt bad - this wasn’t all about her. “Shit. Go, do that, please. I’m sorry.” Oh, God, Eli. Was she home? With her boyfriend, probably, but still.

Laura hugged Velma again. “I’ll be right back, okay? Yell for me if anything happens.” She kissed Velma’s cheek and bounced to her feet, stepping outside to call Jubilee.
