When: June 6
Where: Tea Shop
What: Babysitting interview
Rating/Status: Low
Status: Complete!
Severus was looking forward to the interview. He wanted to make sure that Romana had some time to meet the young woman, though their schedules didn’t work out today to make that possible. He was meeting with Deryn in a tea house, which was one of his favorite places to go when he had a half hour to spare.
He’d just set up in a corner booth with the tea tray when he caught sight of the blonde girl he’d met at the park not too long ago. He lifted a hand to motion to her.
She caught him waving, gave a big, bright smile and headed over his way. Probably, she should have thought to get some tea, but it didn’t really cross her mind immediately. “Hello, Severus,” she greeted, slipping into the chair across from his.
Good thing he bought a pot full. “Hello, Miss Herschel,” he said, lifting the teapot to pour them each a cup of tea on the tray. “Thank you for coming to meet with me.”
Good thing indeed! Happy accidents! Deryn loved those. “Oh, absolutely,” she said, smiling and taking a cup of tea once he’d finished pouring. “I had the day off, anyway.”
“Well, I still appreciate it. Sorry that Romana couldn’t be here. She has a meeting at work.” Severus lifted his own teacup. “I was hoping you could tell me more about your experiences caring for young children.”
Deryn gave a little smile over her teacup, which she was holding in two hands. “It’s okay. People are busy with work sometimes. That’s why they need help.” So obvious, but then, Deryn wasn’t really a subtle person. “I used to sit for my neighbors children when I was younger. And Alice, who you met at the park.”
“And Alice was... five?” Severus asked. “Daisy is going to be three in September. I’d like to get her started in preschool classes a couple of days each week. She’ll need someone to pick her up from school and bring her home to our house. Do you think you could work something like that into your schedule?”
“Five, yes.” And then Deryn was sipping on her tea, and listening, and nodding vaguely. Even though she really didn’t have anything to nod about yet. “It depends,” she said, honestly. “On time. And distance.” She drove a one person scooter, man. Not good for picking children up in.
“The Preschool is walking distance from our home. About a half mile, and there’s a playground near there.” Severus said. “The pay is negotiable, though we’re considering a fair wage to start.” He gave her the number. It was a good wage. Both he and Romana had good jobs, and they wanted the best care for Daisy--which meant paying a good amount.
It was a decent wage -- about what she’d been making when working for Helen Magnus. Maybe a little higher. Deryn took the paper and then slipped it under her tea cup, because she liked the idea that this was a bit like a spy movie. “And what time does she get out of school? I can probably work my schedule at the Farmer’s market around it if I need to.”
“She’ll be in school Monday, Wednesday and Friday from nine until noon.” So, after picking her up and bringing her home, Severus was hoping to have Deryn stay at his place until he or Romana could come home, around four or five. It would be about fifteen hours of work per week, but really well paid work. “Either my wife or I will be home between four and five in the afternoon.”
Deryn took a moment to look up at the ceiling, bright blue eyes thoughtful, as if she were adding up all the math of hours and the offered price. It was -- well. It kind of paid better than the Market, honestly. On top of that, she’d be done babysitting by about the time that Sam got off work on some days. That was nice.
“I could definitely work with that,” she said after a moments time.
“Good.” Severus gave a smile. It was soft, as almost all of his smiles were, but it was there. “Good. I’m sure that Romana will want to meet with you, too, and we’ll have to set up some trial runs with Daisy so that she’ll know you well before Preschool starts in September.”
“That seems fair,” Deryn laughed, and there was no real good reason for it other than she liked to. “That’s what it was like for Alice at first too. I’m sad they moved.”
“Did they?” Severus hadn’t heard that. “Alice and her family? That’s a shame.” Damn. Severus was smirking inside. If she’d just lost a babysitting job, maybe she’d be more likely to take this one, more available if he were to call for an evening sit.
Speaking of which, “Would you be available for any night shifts, given the proper amount of notice?”
“They did. Short notice. But I’m sure they’ll be okay.” He could have all that inner glee over it he wanted, Deryn didn’t really notice. Instead she sipped her tea, holding the cup with two hands, and then smiled over the cup again. “I can be, sure! I don’t do much at nights usually anyway.” Well, she had Sam, but they didn’t hang out every day. And he’d understand if she needed to work.
Sam had an early bedtime, anyway, so he could get to the office at a reasonable hour. So, there was that.
Severus nodded. “That’s wonderful. Well, I think this is a good match. We’ll have to check with Daisy and Romana, but I’m fairly confident we’ve found a new sitter.” He was pleased. That had weighed on him a bit--what they were going to do with Daisy once she started preschool.
Deryn giggled, and it was a happy, nearly musical sound. She was just upbeat like that. “I’m happy to help,” she said, finishing off her tea in a gulp. “Just let me know and I’ll do my best.”
“Thank you.” Severus responded. He lifted his tea cup as if in a toast, and sipped happily.
