Jane wandered into the coffee shop in the Sark Industries lobby to grab herself a coffee. She’d been working for the past 8 hours without a break and the particle collision paths were starting to blur into one. She rubbed her eyes tiredly and ordered a double espresso.
Gwen came in right behind the bleary-eyed woman, gave her a smile, and ordered her chai latte. She knew that tired feeling so very well herself. “Rough day?” She asked, sounding empathetic. Of course, everyone working at Stark had those sorts of days every once in a while.
“Huh?” Jane turned towards the voice and saw a woman stood next to her. “Yeah, sorry. I’ve been at it for 8 hours,” she payed the barista and took her drink. “Got a little carried away,” she admitted, moving to a nearby table. “That and I only got 2 hours sleep last night after waking up with an idea for my work,” she would grumble, but truth be told she loved those nights. When her brain would suddenly present her with something in her subconscious.
Gwen actually chuckled. “Well, you’re certainly in the right building for that sort of thing,” she commented. She absolutely knew how that went. She held out her hand. “Gwen Stacy. I work in IT.” The barista knew to bring the Chai out for Gwen--they had a daily ritual anyway. Gwen took a couple of steps closer so she could continue to pester the brunette.
Jane shook Gwen's hand and smiled at her. "Jane Foster, I'm stealing some alone time with Mr Stark's particle accelerator after I had a dream about quarks," she joked glibly as she took a deep inhale of her coffee, she quite enjoyed the company to be honest. The girl was a breath of fresh air after being practically alone with her work for the day.
“Oh?” Gwen asked, moving to slip into the chair opposite Jane’s. That caught her attention. “Tell me more about your dream.” She’d had her own dreams, but she wouldn’t dare do any of the experiments from them. People turning into giant lizards? No, thank you.
"Just something about the interaction of quarks which might produce the conditions to produce an Einstein-Rosen bridge on the quantum level," Jane explained. "Unfortunately it has to be the right kind of quarks and so far my collisions haven't produced them," she told he disappointedly. "There's something just on the tip of my mind which I know will help but I just can't....reach it," she explained. It was frustrating since she was almost positive her dreams could help her. "I remember...I dreamt of a journal...it was important, but I can't 'see' anything from it," she sighed and pouted a little. "What about you? Any freaky dreams?"
Gwen’s eyes lit up at the words ‘Einstein-Rosen bridge.’ It was something she’d done very, very little research into, but that fascinated her terribly. “Wow.”
And then another question. Gwen nodded. “I have some pretty ridiculous dreams myself,” she said. “I don’t really like thinking about them too much... a lot of them revolve around my ex-boyfriend, and that’s a pretty touchy, painful subject.”
"Ouch, sorry," Jane winced sympathetically. "Can almost relate, mine are all based around a guy I've met here who I'm sorta in love with there, but is dating someone else here," she told Gwen sadly. "It sucks!"
“Ouch.” Gwen said, nodding. “I dated the guy from my dreams--wow, that sounds weird--in college. We were living together, but I left to go do my post-grad stuff at MIT, and he stayed in California.” She frowned a little. Gwen had been head over heels in love with him. It was a painful decision to make, but at the time she thought it was the right one. Now she wasn’t sure. “...he’s dating someone else here. Some brunette.” She said the word with distaste.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Jane winced, putting her coffee down as the girl spoke. "Sounds rough," she agreed. "But you went to MIT? Me too, what did you study?"
“Applied Computer Sciences, I studied Networking,” Gwen said, nodding a little. “The trip cross country really helped me to clear my head, so I thought. I honestly thought I came out of it knowing more about myself than I knew when I went in...” But now she wasn’t so sure.
Jane watched the girl talk and got the sense that there was something bubbling under the surface. “And now?” she asked gently, knowing they had just met but feeling like Gwen wanted to talk about something. They seemed to have a good rapport and she’d quite like to be friends with her.
“Now... with these dreams? I’m all confused,” Gwen admitted. Funny how she’d just met this girl, and suddenly she was confessing her life story. But it wasn’t awkward, or anything. It felt natural. Like they were meant to be friends. “Second guessing things I’d never second guessed before. And it sucks that he works at Stark. I have to see him a lot. At least once a week.”
“Yeah, that’s gotta be bad,” Jane agreed. Luckily she didn’t have to see Thor regularly, otherwise she’d probably be more of a mess. Luckily she had Darcy to keep her grounded on that score. “Sorry,” she offered with a sad smile.
“Thanks. It’s irritating, but we persevere.” Gwen gave a grin. Then her phone started to buzz in her pocket. She pulled it out and clicked it. A text came through. “Ooh, I have to get upstairs. But it was really nice to meet you.” She gave the other a smile. “We should meet up again sometime.”
“Yeah, definitely,” Jane smiled. “I may have use for your skills in a project I’m working on if you’re interested, here’s my number,” she dug into her top shirt pocket and plucked out a business card to hand over to her.
Gwen accepted the business card, then dug one of her own out from her pocket. “Feel free to call me anytime.” She said with a smile as she handed hers over. Gwen felt great that she’d made a friend today!
