Tonks was frustrated. Her cousin and Remus were frustrating her. It was so obvious that they should be together yet they were both being stubborn silly men. She’d been, understandably, distracted with her wedding plans but now she was determined. By the time she got married they would be an item.
First things first, she had to get them to see that they really were meant for each other. So here she was, having a coffee and catch up with Remus at Mac’s place - soon to be her place too once the sale went through on her house.
“So the dresses are ordered, I’m speaking to the caterer this week and everything else is getting there too” she told him smiling, “It’s all very exciting”
Remus was still under the impression that he thought Tonks was rushing into things, because only a few months earlier Tonks had thought she was in love with him, but he didn’t want to upset her, so he would keep his opinions to himself. He only hoped that she knew what she was doing, because he’d wait to see her hurt down the road like he’d been.
“It certainly sounds like things are coming together quickly.” Remus said, taking a sip of his coffee. For the last month and a half or so, both him and Sirius had been waiting for Tonks to do something to attempt to get them together, but it sounded like the wedding planning had been keeping her busy, so they’d been able to have some peace and work on things without her doing anything.
She knew Remus wasn’t exactly approving of how quickly she was getting married and she understood his concerns to a point but she also knew that Mac was everything she wanted and she didn’t want to wait to become his officially.
“They are” she agreed, “Invitations should go out soon too. Are you thinking of bringing anybody?” she asked as she sipped her own drink, “Because you can of course, I just wondered”
Of course Remus wanted to go with Sirius, but that all depended on how things continued to progress with them in the coming weeks. They were still taking things slow and getting to know one another again. They’d been hanging out whenever they were both free and now that school was ending for the summer, Remus would be free much more these days. “I suppose that all depends on whether or not I meet someone between now and then.” Yes, they were still making Tonks think that they were moving on from one another and Remus no longer felt as bad about making her believe that as he had at first.
“Well you know I can think of at least one person who would go with you if you asked” Tonks replied with a sly smile, “You know he’s just a stubborn bugger, you just need to be more stubborn and make him realise you’re actually made for each other” She quickly decided coy wasn’t really her style, blunt and honest was much more her way.
"Tonks, I've told you, it's simply not going to work out," Remus usually wasn't one to lie and had been a horrible liar when he was younger, but having spent years around James and Sirius had taught him a few things. "We're far too different now. We want different things." He took another sip of his coffee as he watched Tonks, waiting to see how she was going to try and convince this time.
“But you don’t know that” she almost whined in frustration, “You need to spend time with each other, maybe you are different but maybe you’re both different in compatible ways. How do you know what each other want? I bet you want the same things but just don’t know it because you’re too damn stubborn to actually communicate”
Sighing, Remus folded his hands together on top of the table as he looked across at her, “Tonks, put yourself in his shoes. If there was ever a time I should have been there to support him, I let someone else convince me otherwise and wrote him a dear john letter instead of even going to see him to break up with him properly. I should have been there for him and instead I took the coward’s way out and broke his heart.” Despite the fact that he and Sirius had spoken about the letter and Sirius understood, Remus still felt awful about it and wanted to do whatever he could to make up for it, “If you were him, would you forgive me? Would you be able to trust me again?”
“Not straight away maybe but I’d get to know you again” Tonks replied, “You guys have history, a lot of history as friends as well as boyfriends and you can’t throw all that away because of a mistake you made when you were younger”
“I don’t know, Tonks. It isn’t as if he’s contacted me since we last spoke,” Remus was fairly certain that as far as Tonks knew, the last time he and Sirius had spoken was when she’d gotten them together. She had no way of knowing that they’d hung out a few times since then. “Why don’t we change the subject.” It wasn’t that he minded talking about Sirius, but he had to make her think that he didn’t want to, “Did I tell you that recieved my wand?”
Tonks was about to argue against the change of subject until Remus mentioned his wand, “You did?” she asked excitedly, she’d go with it for now - she had a plan B anyway - “Have you tried it out yet?”
“Very little. I managed to levitate a book, but that was about the extent of it.” Remus hadn’t actually expected the levitation spell, which he remembered from the dreams, to work, because he hadn’t actually realized that his magic was manifesting itself, but he supposed it made sense since the wand had shown up.
“I’ve done more with my metamorphmagus skills than magic if I’m honest” she told him, “But I can do some cool spells. Hermione is much better than I am. So are you still on Hogwarts dreams?” she was intrigued to know and wondered how he’d react when they got together there.
Remus recalled his encounter with Hermione at the library and wondered how she was doing. Perhaps he’d contact her at some point soon, “I’ve graduated actually. The war is currently going on.” In the dreams, he and the other Marauders had joined The Order of the Phoenix and were currently doing what they could to fight Voldemort. All the while, he was being financially looked after by James considering the stigma he faced at being a werewolf. It seemed that in a world where Wizards, Witches and other fantastical creatures existed, it was looked down upon to be a werewolf.
Tonks nodded, “Oh okay, you’ve moved along well” she replied, “There’s still lots of exciting things to come” though she wouldn’t tell him anything, she wanted the surprise to remain.
“I’m going to assume that, that means I survive the war then.” After all, if Tonks was able to tell him that then it meant that she must know him in her dreams. His future. He picked up his cup and finished off his coffee as he wondered what else the dreams would have in store. He only hoped that his magic was the only thing that would bleed over and not the Lycanthropy.
“Oh” she said in dismay, “Oh no I spoiled you” she said sadly. “That’s terrible of me, don’t let me say anything else” she told him before picking up his coffee cup, “More coffee?” she offered.
Remus couldn’t help but chuckle at her reaction and he shook his head, “It’s alright, Tonks. I’d rather know that I survive the way as opposed to wondering.” He thought for a moment before responding to her question, “Yes, I think I’ll have another cup actually.”
“I know but it feels somewhat like spoiling the ending to a book” she said with a grin, “Although my dreams have stopped now I don’t think it was the end” she mused before shaking her head and smiling, “Stay right there I’ll get you another cup and we can talk magic” With that she hurried into the kitchen, Remus’ cup in hand.
Tonks hadn’t actually spoiled him, because Hermione had referred to him in her dreams months earlier, so he’d known for some time that he must have lived to a certain point, but he wasn’t going to get too much into details at the moment. When Tonks left the room, Remus sat there for a moment or two before noticing that Tonks had left her own empty cup on the table. Thinking that she might want more coffee as well, he picked up the cup and headed into the kitchen, “Tonks, you left your mug. I thought you might want more as well and I’d save you the trip back into the living room.”
When Remus walked into the kitchen and spoke Tonks startled and spilt the potion she had been about to pour into his cup on the side, “Oh Remus, thanks” she said somewhat flustered as she tried to hide what she had been doing, “That’s great” she gave him a too bright smile as she panicked. She wasn’t used to being caught.
Stepping into the kitchen, Remus stopped when he saw what Tonks was doing and frowned as she turned towards him and smiled, a little too bright, “Tonks. What were you doing?” He thought he had an idea, because it was either what he was thinking or she was trying to poison him and he doubted that was the case. “What was that?”
“Hmm? What was what?” she asked as innocently as she could manage, before realising he wasn’t going to fall for it. Damn. “Oh, that, right. It’s nothing bad I promise. It’s just a little helping hand...to make you see that you and Sirius maybe are meant to be together. Itwasalovepotiontorevealyourtruelove” she ran the words together before moving to rinse out the cup and start over.
Remus wished that he could say that he was surprised by what he’d caught Tonks doing, but he wasn’t. He wasn’t surprised at all. “Tonks.” He pinched the bridge of his nose, which for a moment made him look older than his mid thirties. “Where did you get a love potion?” He sighed, knowing that he was going to have to let Sirius know about this as soon as possible so that she didn’t try it on him too. “You have to realized that, that isn’t exactly ethical, correct?”
“I made it. I had a dream about being at school and making one” she admitted, wincing at his next question, “I wouldn’t say that exactly, I mean it wouldn’t make you act on anything, just admit you hearts desire” she told him quietly, “I’m not doing it to be mean, I’m doing it to see you happy”
“Tonks, I...” What was he supposed to say to that? He could understand why she would do it and understand why she was so invested in their relationship and he very nearly came out and told her then and there what was actually going on between them, but he caught himself just before he opened his mouth. While he understood, it was still technically a violation, “Tonks, promise me you won’t try this again.”
Technically it was but she really was doing it for a good reason. The best reason there was really. “Okay okay, I promise” she said holding up her hands.
“That goes for Sirius as well.” Either way, he was going to let Sirius know right away. “I should probably go. I have to finish a study packet.” Finals were coming up for his students and Remus wanted to make sure they were as prepared as possible.
“Are you sure?” she said, ignoring the comment about Sirius - after all she hadn’t actually agreed to that. “I’m sorry Remus, I promise I won’t try to interfere with you again”
Remus nodded, he didn’t want her to think he was leaving because of what she’d just tried to do, but he really did need to finish his work for the next day, “I’ll call or text you later, alright?” Approaching her, Remus leaned in and kissed her on the cheek.
“Okay” she agreed, convinced that what she had tried to do was precisely why he was leaving but said nothing. “Thank you for coming round” she told him as she kissed his cheek too.
