Merlin was on his way to meet Arthur, coffee and cinnamon rolls in hand. He'd sweet talked Audrey into making them for him so they were fresh and the best Arthur would ever eat.

His excitement was high especially after receiving such a good reaction from Morgana. He hoped Arthur would be just as understanding, he wanted his friend to be happy for him. He had to be, right? Of course he did. If anybody would approve of Merlin getting laid it would be him especially when he found out it was a 'she' doing the laying. Shaking his head with a smile he walked up the path and knocked on Arthur's door.

Usually when someone said they needed to talk, it wasn't a good thing. After another batch of dreams, Arthur woke up and began to rack his brain, trying to figure out what it was Merlin needed to tell him. Did he know about Guenevere? Was she here?

Thankfully, Merlin arrived early enough that Arthur didn't need to torture himself very long. He opened the door and was relieved to find Merlin smiling. "Oh no," he said. "You didn't go shagging our pal, Jace, did you?" He didn't expect Merlin did, but it was fun to tease him anyway.

Maybe not Jace, but Merlin did look distinctly like he'd been spending the night with someone. "Thank you, servant. You may sit," Arthur teased back as he took the bag. The rolls smelled delicious, warm and inviting. Arthur sat on his recliner and leaned forward so he could place the bag on the coffee table.

"What's this you have to tell me?" he asked as he made himself comfortable and sipped at his coffee. Strangely enough, Merlin seemed to know just how he liked it.

Merlin laughed but sat taking a seat opposite Arthur and sipping his own coffee. Before digging in the bag and stealing a roll.

"I'm no longer single" Merlin replied proudly, "For the first time in my life I am somebody's boyfriend" And god did it feel good to say that. He also loved finding reasons to call Audrey his girlfriend just because he loved the way it sounded.

Arthur thought of making a joke that he'd cut off Merlin's hand for such a thing, but then he remembered that Uther would do much more than that and thought better of it.

When Merlin said what he did, Arthur looked over at him, a little confused. He didn't know what he wanted to feel just yet. He didn't even know that Merlin liked someone. At least, other than himself. A sudden, unreasonable pang of jealousy hit him and he cleared his throat, trying to keep a pleased face about him. Jealousy was ridiculous. Arthur was a straight man who would never be anything more than Merlin's friend, but there was still that inexplicable blow to his ego.

"Who's the lucky guy?" he asked at length, for he could only assume that Merlin was exclusively into men.

Merlin would have taken it well enough, it bothered him less than Arthur how Uther treated magic users in his dreams. At the end of the day it was Arthur and not Uther who was important to Merlin so as long as Arthur was okay what did Merlin care what Uther threatened.

"Actually" Merlin began, "and rather surprisingly, for me as well as everybody else, it's a girl. Audrey. She runs Baxter's bakery" and there was that dopey smile once more as he spoke about her.

This should have been happy news. Merlin was happy and that was what mattered, right. Still -

"I'm a little confused," Arthur said, leaning forward in his chair as if that would help clear up said confusion. "I thought you were gay." They'd had a whole conversation about it. It would be very strange if Merlin suddenly changed his mind, and somehow, this being a woman Merlin was seeing did not make the jealousy disappear. Women tended to mess everything up, just like Guenevere had. That wasn't fair, it hadn't been her fault, it had been Arthur's and he knew it.

"Me too" Merlin replied, a little unhelpfully before he shrugged, "I've never been attracted to girls before so I figured I must be but Audrey, she's different. She's brilliant, smart, quirky, beautiful and she gets me. I love being around her and we get on so well"

He stopped and tried to remember what Fkemeth had said, "Maybe sexuality isn't as rigid as we see it. Maybe I just fell for the person despite gender. Whatever it is I just know that she's my girlfriend and I've never been happier"

If sexuality wasn't that rigid, then maybe Arthur had it all wrong. He just couldn't figure out why Merlin felt the need to date her. He could still be happy if they were just friends and if she was so brilliant, why was Arthur just now hearing about her? Maybe Merlin wanted to keep it a secret, that would be very much like the Merlin from Arthur's dreams.

Arthur rubbed his hands on the thighs of his own jeans before he stood up. He took in a breath and crossed over to Merlin. He sat down beside him and looked at him for a moment, at his big dumb ears and his big dumb, beautiful smile. The thing about Arthur was, he'd betray his own Champion to get what he wanted, he was above nothing. He certainly wasn't above what he did next. His kiss was confident, his hand steady as his fingers gently gripped at Merlin's strong chin and jaw line.

Merlin had kept her to himself even while they were just friends, she was his and he hadn't wanted or felt the need to share her. And after his wet dream about her there wasn't really a way of remaining friends without at least seeing if there was anything to it. And luckily there had been. Though he wasn't about to share that with Arthur.

When Arthur moved to sit next to him Merlin expected a lecture or an accusation, whatever it was it certainly wasn't that Arthur was going to kiss him. He froze for a moment, this was something he'd dreamed of so many times but now, now it felt wrong. Pulling back, he stood, "What the hell was that Arthur!?"

When Merlin pulled back, the ache only grew, but Arthur's face betrayed nothing. He sat back, arms at his sides. He couldn't help but wonder if he were him, if he were Merlin's Arthur, if Merlin would have reciprocated. That was a thought that Arthur wished he hadn't entertained.

"That was a kiss, Merlin," he answered coolly. "I'm sure you've experienced those before." He hadn't expected Merlin to reciprocate, he'd only hoped for something. Not this. But something.

	Arthur shrugged. He'd been thinking a lot of things just before he kissed Merlin, but he didn't want to admit to any of those things. "Congratulations on the girlfriend, Merlin, I'm happy for you," he said with a tone that was more king-like than friend-like. 	Merlin frowned as he studied Arthur, not liking the tone or the attitude one bit. "Why are you acting like this? It's like I've somehow insulted or jilted you by getting a girlfriend" he said, "which is ridiculous because you made it perfectly clear you weren't interested in me like that" he reminded the arrogant blonde. "And you made it clear that you were much more interested in the same gender," Arthur reminded Merlin. So they were both full of shit. Arthur might not have wanted to be Merlin's boyfriend, but there was something about Merlin being taken that made Arthur feel second and he didn't like that feeling at all.

Arthur stood finally. They were standing close, almost close enough for Arthur to kiss Merlin again, but he refrained. "I'm sorry I didn't react the way you wanted me to."

"So what Arthur? Because I'm interested in a girl now you're suddenly interested in boys?" Merlin replied, he stepped back as Arthur came closer.

"No you didn't react the way I wanted, you reacted in a way I'd never expect from you Arthur" he was disappointed. He had expected more. Merlin wasn't the kind of person to cheat on anybody he was with and to Merlin kissing was cheating. Arthur should have known that.

"Look I should go" he said, "I'll see you around" he said making his way to Arthur's front door.

Fuck. If Merlin left, Arthur probably wouldn't hear from him for a long time, but he was stubborn and he let Merlin go. He wanted to shout after him, that he was sorry, he was just confused and that he really was happy for Merlin. Regret was part of Arthur's life, it was like an old shoe that had a rock in it, but he just couldn't bring himself to remove the rock or throw away the shoe.

When Merlin was gone, Arthur picked up the bag and coffee and tossed them away. He looked at the sword in the corner, glinting and proud but quite without a crown. Part of him understood why his crown wasn't here, he had yet to earn it. For now, Arthur understood that he did not deserve it.
