Alma stood in Beth’s room, holding Elise in her arms. The child had never forgotten her, she was sure of that. She stroked the baby’s face and set her back into her crib, before walking to Beth’s side, and placing a hand on her sleeping shoulder.
She entered the girl’s mind. She found the hurt and it nearly made her cry. If Beth still wanted to be with her after all of this, it would be a miracle. Alma dug further, until she found where the memories had been buried, and then she set them free.
Beth felt a headache creeping on, and she sat up to go get some aspirin. When she saw Alma, she cried out and moved to hug her. “Oh, god, Pretty, you’re - you’re here and where were you?”
“Beth!” Alma wrapped her arms around Beth, letting out a choked sob. “I’m sorry I’m so sorry. I was trying to protect you! I’m so sorry I hurt you!”
“Where were you?” Beth clapped a hand to her mouth. She remembered what she’d been doing while she thought she was “single”.
“Taking care of my father.” She stroked Beth’s cheek, and nuzzled her. “So that he could no longer threaten us again.”
“Is he ... “ Beth didn’t finish the sentence, worrying over Alma by pulling her down and kissing her gently.
“No.” Alma closed her eyes, to kiss her and to avoid looking her in the eye. “I could not risk becoming him. So I … dealt with him another way.”
Beth wrapped her arms around Alma. “Nobody blames you, Pretty.”
“I do. I do not know how you can...still want me after what I did to you. To everyone.” Alma hugged Beth tightly.
“You did it to save me. I’d do anything to keep you safe too.” Beth understood that. She’d have done the same if she’d had to.
Alma nodded her head. Beth was right. It made it easier to hear. She knew it wasn’t fair to be hurt over the sex stuff, so she didn’t bring it up. Instead she curled in. “I love you. You and Elise matter most.”
“I kept crying,” she murmured. “I didn’t know why I was so sad,” she gasped. “It was hard.”
“That is my fault...I could take away my face but I could not take away how you felt...” She stroked Beth’s hair. She would never leave her again. “I want to go away, Beth. I want to go some place where these things don’t follow me.”
“So we’ll go.” Beth smiled and kissed Alma lightly. “Your father knows you’ll keep me and Elise safe.”
"I'll miss him..." She frowned. She wished she could take Wrex with her but he belonged here. He'd helped her, and he had other people to help.
“I will too. Maybe he can come visit?” Beth smiled, nuzzling into Alma.
"He will have to. He had to walk one of us down the aisle," she pointed out, sliding a hand up Beth's leg.
“Mmm, he should walk you.” Beth was fine with him doing that; he was Alma’s father, after all.
“...I never thought I’d ever want to get married. Let alone to a beautiful girl like you.” Alma’s hand slid a little higher up, and her eyes glistened with emotion. “I should not have left you like I did. I was just...I killed all of you.”
Beth didn’t know what that meant, but she did know that she didn’t want Alma to cry. She cupped her lover’s cheeks and shhh’d her quietly.
Tears fell anyway. She didnt deserve Beth. Didnt deserve to be taken back. But she had and she wanted to make it up to her for the rest of her life. "Will Elise forgive me too?"
“Of course she will. She loves you more than I do, if only because you’re her mother. You know how strong that bond is.” Beth moved closer, rocking Alma gently.
Alma exhaled shakily, and clung onto Beth. It wasn’t fair, she shouldn’t be the one in Beth’s arms, it should be the other way around. But she was going to break down very quickly at this rate. “I cannot believe I abandoned my family.”
“You weren’t going to do it forever. I believe that.” Beth snuggled closer. “Just to keep us safe for a time.”
“Yes...” She peered into Beth’s eyes. “I want to be with you for a time, before I fix the others. Just us.”
Beth nodded, kissing Alma gently. They just needed each other.
“Close your eyes,” Alma ordered gently.
Beth did so, obediently, without question.
Alma smiled and kissed her eyelids, then she entered the woman’s mind, filling her until they were all but infused with one another. She wanted to remind them both of what they had. She wanted to reassure Beth how she felt and that she had thought it was the best plan at the time.
She hadn’t really needed the reassurance; Beth knew already. “Oh, Pretty, I know.” She bit her lip. “I love you. I never stopped.”
“I love you, Beth. I want to share my soul with you. I want to share in your soul.” Alma nuzzled at her.
“Then do. Whatever you need, whenever you need it, I’m here.” Beth smiled.
“I want to make you scream,” Alma announced. “Then I want to cuddle with our baby.”
That made Beth giggle even as she blushed. “I’d like all of that. And just think - we can do this forever.”
“Forever, and ever.” She grinned and kissed her deeply.
