Glinda was excited, she couldn’t wait to tell Elphie that she’d gotten accepted into her education course at University. It was really thanks to her that she’d even gone through with the application. So she stopped at Starbucks to get her friends favourite coffee and a sneaky little cake before heading over to Elphaba’s place. She was sure her friend wouldn’t mind, she was sure to be home by now.
Bouncing on the balls of her feet she knocked on the door, “Elphie” she called out, “Let me in slow coach, I have news!”
Lúthien had come over to surprise Elphaba. She wasn’t as good a cook, but she could make a servicable lunch for her girlfriend. She raised her eyebrow and opened the door with a smile. “I’m afraid Elphie isn’t in.”
“Oh, hello” Glinda said, “I didn’t know Elphie had a roommate” she smiled brightly, “I’m Glinda, would you like a coffee?” she offered.
"I'm not her roommate," the woman replied. Her voice had a musical quality to it. "Although that's a grand idea. I'm Lúthien, her....friend."
“Oh I just thought because you’re here and she’s not that you must...Oh, oh her friend” Glinda clapped, “How wonderful” she exclaimed, hugging the poor woman before she knew what hit her and taking her arm she entered the apartment, “Elphie has been such a dark horse. Honestly, she’s terrible” the smile remained on Glinda’s face as she sat herself down with a coffee. “Now tell me everything”
Lúthien blinked, then laughed good naturedly. She closed the door behind them and let Glinda lead her back into the kitchen. “I’m not sure where I should start.”
“At the beginning of course” Glinda told her laughing but sweetly, “How you met?” she suggested.
“We met at the gym, she was singing in the shower, so I joined in.” Lúthien smiled, and brushed some hair behind a very pointy ear.
“Oh how romantic, you sang together” Glinda clasped her hands together and grinned before noticing Lúthien’s ear. “You have elf ears” she declared unaware of how close to the truth that was, “That’s so cute. Elphie has herself an adorable elf girlfriend” It was just all too delicious.
“I suppose it’s no use trying to deny that,” Lúthien replied, though it was unclear if she meant ears, or the girlfriend part. Glinda was bubbly, and it was a little infectious.
“We started as friends, and then it went from there.”
Glinda. naturally, took it that she meant the girlfriend part. Because actual elves didn’t exist of course. “So what is it you do?” she asked, “You aren’t an accountant like Elphie are you?”
“I’m a singer,” she replied, tapping her throat. “I have an album in Europe and I’m doing the finishing touches to my first one here. I’m from Monaco.” It was present in her voice sometimes. a slight accent not quite French or Italian but close.
“Oh, I’d love to hear you. I’ll be sure to order your album” Glinda replied clapping with glee, “Has Elphie told you about our fashion house? Maybe you could sing at our launch party”
“I can get you a copy of my other one,” Lúthien promised. She was still trying to get her voice toned down. A side effect of her dreams made her move people too much. “When is the launch party?”
“Really? Thank you so much” Glinda said excitedly, “Oh I’m not sure. Elphie tends to handle that, we’re still gathering designers. But it’s going to be brilliant” she was sure.
“I’ll have to practice,” Lúthien said. “It’s not really practice when it’s something you love doing, but I do need to do it.” She’d nearly made Harry faint, after all.
“Oh don’t worry, it’s not going to be like next week or something” Glinda assured her, “You’ll have plenty of time to practice. Though I am sure you sound lovely. Your speaking voice is very musical”
Lúthien smiled happily. “Thank you. I cannot really explain why I need the practice without sounding like a lunatic, though.”
“Honey you know that just sounds damn intriguing?” Glinda said with a laugh, “Pretty sure it can’t be more crazy than some of the stuff around here”
“It’s related to my dreams,” Lúthien replied. “And my pointed ears. It’s something that...altered the nature of my voice. I suppose it makes me a better singer, but …. well there is a magic to my voice now.”
“Wow” Glinda said looking impressed, “That’s pretty cool. So what kind of magic does your voice hold? Is it like casting spells?” she asked interestedly.
Well Glinda was taking this well. “It’s Power. I dreamed that I moved the gods themselves with the emotion in my song. And I tested it with a friend, and it seemed to do the same thing, here. You really don’t think I sound like a lunatic?”
“Of course not” Glinda replied, honestly surprised at the question, “Why on earth would I think that? I mean we live in the weirdest place in the world and it’s hardly the strangest thing I’ve heard. In actual fact it’s quite lovely!”
“Thank you.” Lúthien smiled at her and blushed a little bit. “Oh! Would you like a drink? I’m being rude.”
“Not at all” Glinda assured her, gesturing to the drinks she had brought with her, “Please help yourself, I’m sure Elphie won’t mind, it will get cold otherwise” She reached into her bag and retrieved the cake she had stashed there. “Can I tempt you?” she grinned.
“Of course you can tempt me. I may dream I’m an elf, but we still have a taste for sweet things!” Lúthien grinned, getting up to get utensils.
Glinda smiled brightly, “Oh I’m so glad” she declared, “There’s something very satisfying about good cake” she mused.
“Isn’t there? I’ve been meaning to learn to bake. I think Elphie would appreciate that.”
“Oh I’m afraid i’m hopeless in the kitchen” Glinda replied, “which is why I am happy to keep restaurants and bakeries in business by using them” she grinned wickedly.
“Oh, that’s a wonderful thing,” Lúthien said, her face lighting up. She’d never really thought of it that way. “I’ll have to eat out, more often then.”
Glinda nodded, “I highly recommend it” she replied, “You and Elphie could have a date night and go out to eat” she suggested brightly.
“I honestly doubt that Elphie needs help being convinced to go out with me,” Lúthien replied cheerfully. She preferred to look on life positively.
“Oh I’m sure she doesn’t, I didn’t meant to imply that at all” Glinda replied, “I just know that busy people tend to forego going out so setting up a regular date night can help make sure you take that time”
Lúthien smiled softly. “You have a good point, Glinda. We haven’t gone out in quite some time, it will do us some good.” Maybe not improve their sex life, but do some good. Lúthien was still wary about the whole soul-bonding thing.
"I wish I could claim it as my own but I think I must have read it somewhere" she sighed, "I'm sure it will, its always nice to go out and spend time with those you love"
“I won’t tell anyone if you won’t,” Lúthien replied, her smile mischevious and gleeful. “Is there any place in particular you recommend?”
Glinda returned the grin before telling her about the fabulous little Japanese place she’d found recently, “Seriously they have the most amazing tappanyaki there, I loved it”
Lúthien made a mental note of it. “I look forward to trying this place out. Thank you.” This has been a most random, enlightening encounter. She enjoyed it. “Elphaba is lucky to have a friend like you."
“You’re welcome” Glinda replied, “Oh well thank you, I think I’m a little too exuberant for her sometimes” she grinned, “But there’s a playful side to her I’m sure” and she was sure Lúthien saw it a lot more often than Glinda did.
“You? A little too exuberant? I wouldn’t have guessed.” Lúthien smiled cheekily. “There is, I think I bring it out in her. She has..a rather terrible self-esteem.”
Glinda laughed, she liked this woman, then she frowned, “But why? I mean she’s brilliant. Pretty, clever, patience of a saint”
“Exactly! I think she feels like she was in her sister’s shadow for a long time.”
Glinda nodded, “Well she’s fantastic all on her own, honestly I don’t know what I’d do without her. She’s one of the few people who has ever been honest and supportive”
That made Lúthien smile, and love Elphaba even more. “It’s her gift, really.”
“It is” Glinda replied smiling, “We’ll just have to make sure she knows she is appreciated” she nodded like the decision had been made. “Anyway, I’m sure I’ve taken up enough of your time. Please let Elphie know I stopped by” she requested, “And it’s been truly lovely to meet you”
Lúthien got to her feet, and gave Glinda a hug. "It's been splendid!"
“It has, I’m so glad I stopped by” Glinda said returning the hug before making her way to the door, “I hope to see you again soon” she smiled before leaving Lúthien in peace once more.
