Nikola had been in a sour mood over the last couple of days. He was pacing tonight, in the living room. His tie was off, his sleeves rolled up a bit, but his vest was still buttoned, his shirt tucked in. He found he did his best thinking while still mostly dressed. Once the clothes came off, his brain shut down. Especially with his wife at home.

Speaking of his wife. “Lu?” He called out. He had no idea where she was. He’d been pacing for quite some time now, trying to mentally prepare him for the manhunt that he and Varric were going to go on looking for Helen.

Lulu was curled up in his study, reading a book and curled up in one of his chairs. She had a cashmere throw wrapped around her shoulders. “In here, sweetheart!”

Nikola turned down the hall and pushed open the door a moment later. “...Are you cold?” He asked, then stepped over to the wall in the hallway to glance at the thermostat. Anything to distract him from Helen’s disappearance, and the fact that he was going to have to go hunt her down.

“Always a little bit.” She looked up to see him walking away toward the thermostat. “Are you all right, Nikola?

“No.” Nikola didn’t believe in putting on a front for Lu. She would know if he was lying, anyway. He turned around at the thermostat and walked back into the room to perch on the edge of the desk. “Helen’s been missing for a while now. I’ve told Varric where we should start looking for her.”

Lulu sighed, smiling lopsidedly. She knew what this was. “She disappeared after we got married, didn’t she.”

“She did. Weeks ago. Left Varric with Alice, just took off.” Nikola hadn’t even thought about her law firm. He hoped those young boys could handle the case load. Then again, that wasn’t his concern. He was only concerned with getting Helen back. It was selfish, really, he’d lost her once and didn’t want to lose her again.

Lulu just chuckled, marking her place in the book and shutting it. “You know, it’s funny. I never understood why she didn’t fight for you more. She loves Varric, but not as much as you. Maybe we should switch.” She wasn’t as mad at Nikola; she knew he loved her. Probably not as much as Helen, but she’d made her peace with that.

Nikola soon his head. "She never loved me. Not as much as I loved her." Probably not the right thing to say, Nik. "But that's all in the past. Varric needs help finding her and bringing her home, so I'm going with him. We think she's up in Seattle."

“Fine.” Lulu could feel herself shaking. She looked back down at her book. “Have fun.”

Nikola frowned slightly. “It’s not going to be fun, Lu. I don’t want to go.”

Lulu ignored him. She was reading.

Sigh. “This isn’t a pleasure trip, Lulu. I’d much rather be home with you.” He wasn’t sure what she wanted him to say to make this all better.

“Nikola? I knew when I married you that you loved me more than her.” Lulu snapped her book shut and stood up, scarlet eyes narrowed. “But I thought you wouldn’t be so obvious about it. You don’t have to rub it in my face. So go. I frankly don’t care anymore. Marry her for all I care.”

Nikola simply stared at her for a moment, unblinking. He couldn’t believe she actually thought that. He was obsessed with his new wife, more in love with her than himself--which was certainly saying something.

“You’re being ridiculous.” He said. That must be it. Must be... that time of the month. Something like that. He turned to head out of the room and go into the bedroom to pack.

“I’m going to bed,” she sighed, pulling the blanket closer around her shoulders and moving past him into the bedroom. She just wanted to forget this was happening. It was a good thing that Helen wasn’t in the room.

Nikola paused for only a beat. “I was going to...” He shook his head a little and turned to head back out of the bedroom, giving her space. “Nevermind. You sleep.” He would come in later when she was asleep, and do his best not to wake her.

“Going to what.” She folded her arms, turning to face him.

“Pack.” Nikola said. He wasn’t going to fight with her on this one. “It’s not important. You go ahead and sleep.” He could use a glass of wine. Or eight.
