Who: Derny and AJ When: Next week sometime, May 28? Where: Farmer’s Market What: AJ wants to know when Deryn and Sam are getting married Rating/Warnings: Low/None? Status: Complete!
AJ brightened when she saw Deryn coming toward her stall at the market. Deryn made the rounds, so AJ knew she’d see her friend eventually. “Hey, D!” She called out, waving the blonde girl closer. “I made cookies! You want one? Applesauce and oatmeal. All hand-made!”
“Hey AJ!” Deryn skipped the rest of the way over, and somehow managed not to fall even once by the time she made it to her friends’ booth. “How’s it going? Cookies, huh?” Her eyebrows were raised high, and her smile was friendly.
"Yeah!" AJ said, pulling the top off, and holding out the tupperware to her friend. There were plenty of cookies in there. They may not have been the prettiest in the world, but they were delicious. AJ was trying to become a good housewife, and that meant baking. Right? She could do almost anything with apples, anyway. "How's your day going?"
Deryn took a few, and certainly didn’t seem offended by their lack of prettiness. She ate one immediately and mmmed a happy noise. “Oh my gosh, these are good.” a beat. “Oh, my day’s going really well! Everything’s in order!” She waved her little clipboard as if to prove it.
“Thanks! I love baking.” AJ said, proudly. She nodded, snatching up one of the cookies for herself then putting the tupperware away. “So, has Sam asked you to marry him yet?” She asked, completely unabashedly, pausing for a split second before breaking into a huge grin.
AJ's instigate nice that she and Sam were going to get married even made deryn roll her eyes a little. She grinned In response immediately after, but still. "Not yet," she said, even though she was certainly not waiting for it to happen either.
AJ didn’t really look disappointed at that news. “It’s coming. I hope you’re ready for it.” She said, grinning as she took a bite from her cookie and chewed. “And you’re going to be happy married to Sam. He’s a good man.”
“I’m happy with Sam now,” Deryn said pointedly. And she was. Even with their schedules, she was happy when they found time to spend together. She wasn’t a needy girl, or even a very clingy one. She loved Sam, and he loved her. She was happy. But that didn’t mean she felt any burning need to see him every hour of every day. It didn’t mean she felt the need to have a ring on her finger to say so, either. “Can I have another cookie?”
“Of course you can!” AJ said. She grabbed the tupperware and opened it so they could each have another cookie. “I’ll get you the recipe. I imagine that you could probably use pears or something, but apples are the best.”
Deryn nodded and nibbled happily again - she might have said that Sam would like these too, but she didn’t want to encourage more wedding talk with the oddly obsessed AJ. “Definitely different than muffins,” she said instead. Because making muffins was rather her specialty -- and she rarely thought to bake anything but.
Sam would have liked them. AJ would have suggested they serve them at the wedding reception. So, maybe it was a good thing that Deryn didn’t follow that line of thought. “I’m sure you’d be great at making these! They’re not like muffins, but easier, I think.”
“Maybe you can come over and make them with me,” Deryn suggested, because sometimes she was sure that she didn’t see enough of AJ. Plus cooking with other people resulted in even less accidents. Which was always nice, considering.
“Oooh, that sounds like a darn good time,” AJ said, nodding. “I’d love to have a buddy to bake with. It’s much better than bakin’ on my own. And I might eat less. We’ll bust out the wine and gossip for a bit!”
“It’ll have to be the middle of the week, I think,” Deryn said, “I’ve gotta babysit over the weekend.” She didn’t seem sad about it, but even she knew better than drinking and watching children!
“Oooh, okay! When yer done, then. Just gimme a call, we’ll set it up!” AJ would love a girls night out. As much as she loved her husband and being married, she was already starting to miss hanging out with her best girls. It was strange not to be Tonks’ roommate anymore.
“Will do!!” She was excited enough for it where two exclamation points were needed, clearly. “Alright! Back to it!” She wiggled her clipboard and then skipped off.
