Surprisingly, Martha somehow had managed to wind up with the night before Memorial Day off. How that had happened, she didn’t know and she wasn’t going to argue after just pulling two twelve hour shifts in the last two days. So, one would think that she’d want to spend the night at home, relaxing or sleeping, but instead she’d called up Molly to see if she was still stuck in the morgue and if she wasn’t, if she could drag her out for the night. Over the last few months, Martha had done pretty well at sticking to her New Year’s Resolution of getting out and making friends, so tonight she decided to continue on with it and suggested her and Molly go to a bar in Irvine. She wasn’t looking for anything but a fun night with her friend and would have invited Nina too, but what were the odds that all three of them would be off from the hospital on the same night?
So, after talking to Molly, Martha had gotten herself ready then left to pick up her friend and they were now, seated at a small round table, drinks in hand, “So, how many nights exactly, did you wind up spending in the morgue last week?” Martha had gone by Molly’s to feed her cat for her at least one of the nights.
After nearing the fourth day in the morgue, Molly was deemed okay to go home and get some rest. Apparently no one had noticed that she was still there because she hadn’t spoken up. Go figure. They all figured that they could just ignore her, and she wouldn’t say anything until she was literally passing out from being so tired. In any case, she had been home and catching up sleep and other things when Martha called. She would love to go out. Any excuse not to stay inside anymore.
She was picked up by Martha, and got herself a drink. “Um.. almost four. Three overnights and then I went home yesterday afternoon. Slept pretty much until you called me.” She sighed a bit. “It was awful.”
Mickey had joined a group of his friends on their mutual friend’s bachelor party. The group was already rowdy enough when they stumbled into the next bar. There was shouting and a mass movement towards the bar as they all tried to figure out who was buying this round and pick up some shots for them all to take. Mickey grabbed his beer and stepped away from his group for a moment. He was slightly tipsy on his feet, but he felt the need to breathe, so he surveyed the room before his group would be discovered. Why should his friend have all the fun? Mickey wanted a chance to chat up a cute girl, so this was his opportunity.
“How did you manage to not pass out while doing autopsies? And aren’t there others who you rotate with? Why’d you have to be there for so long?” Martha asked, taking a sip of her drink. It was crazy to think that enough people had died over the last few days to keep Molly that busy for the last three days. As she set her drink back down on the table, she glanced past Molly, brows rising slightly, “I think that guy over there came into the ER last week.” She was pretty sure that it was Mickey, the guy who had been attacked by a brick wall.
“There was a building fire. And a lot of people died. I suppose we could have waited a bit but everyone was so anxious and it was so sudden.” She leaned in a bit. “To be honest, the burned ones smell a bit more than regular ones.” Molly hated admitting that. “But mostly I just volunteered to stay so everyone else could go home and get some sleep.” She glanced up to see who Martha was talking about and spotted Mickey across the way. “Oh? He’s cute. You should go over there and chat him up.”
His gaze had landed on Martha earlier, but he had to do a double take to make sure it was actually her, and tried to figure out her friend that was with her. It was definitely her and he found himself to be pleasantly surprised about that because he hadn’t expected to run into her again unless he went back into the ER, which he didn’t want to do. So he turned to his friend, probably while Martha was looking at him, and explained the situation. His friend told him to just go over here, but he didn’t want to appear like a creepy person because he had also considered bringing over some drinks. So, while Martha and Molly discussed him he was doing the same with his friends. Finally he broke away from his friends and decided to slowly make his way over to where the girls were sitting.
“You shouldn’t have to be the one to volunteer to do that, Molly. You have to sleep sometime too.” Martha said, taking another sip of her drink, “That’s awful though, about the fire. So, the morgue smelled extra crispy for a few days?” She wrinkled her nose, even as she made the joke, knowing that it was a bad one and probably in poor taste, but she couldn’t help it. When Molly looked back at Mickey and suggested she go talk to him, she shook her head, “Wouldn’t that be weird? I patched him up when he came into the ER.” She supposed he wasn’t technically her patient, because it had been a one off, but she still wondered if that’d be weird regardless.
“Well yes, I know. But I’m okay with helping out. I don’t have a life.” Molly shrugged a little. “But I’m getting rest now. I promise. It was a little crispy, but it’s okay now. We cleaned it out.” She gave a small smile. It would be nice if her other friends found someone nice. She could be a wing woman, she was really good at that actually. “No that wouldn’t be weird. Just say that you’re making sure that he’s okay. Chat him up. Go on.” She nudged her a little. “He’s coming over here anyway.” She gave Martha a pointed look and then smiled up at Mickey. “Hello!”
It didn’t take long to get over to their table and they must have been talking about him because suddenly they got slightly quiet and both sets of eyes were upon him. The woman he didn’t know said hello and he smiled back at her. “Hello there. I’m Mickey, I’ve met your friend, but I haven’t met you,” he stuck his hand out to shake Molly’s hand glanced over to Martha to shoot her a smile, “Fancy seeing you here, Doc. Did you have a hard day at the ER?”
Martha laughed at how absurd that actually sounded, but at the same time it would be a good ice breaker. Martha had never run into a patient outside of the hospital, so that was probably part of the reason it seemed so strange to her, but before she could do much of anything, Mickey was standing right there next to their table, smiling at them, “Hi.” She smiled back as he extended his hand towards Molly, “Molly, this is Mickey Smith, he was attacked by a brick wall a week or so ago and just happened to wander in during my exam rounds,” She glanced over at Mickey, “Molly also works at the hospital. And surprisingly, it was a fairly easy day. Well, yesterday was. Even though I did two twelve hours.” Yeah, she sounded real good right now.
Molly shook Mickey’s hand happily. “It’s nice to meet you, Mickey. Attacked by a brick wall? Ouch. That sounds painful. I take it that the brick wall won?” She hadn’t met anyone who had been attacked by inanimate objects before. Unless they were dead and she had no idea what had happened to them. Anything was possible. “You’re welcome to join us, if you want.”
“I wasn’t attacked by a brick wall. I was more attacked by someone else and the brick wall decided that it wanted to help catch me. I like to think that I won in the end since I just have scrapes, but the brick wall looks like it is in better shape than me, so maybe we’ll call it a draw?” he didn’t like someone to think that he purposely got hurt by a brick wall when it wasn’t his fault at all, “And twelve hours? That sucks. What do you do, Molly? And I would love to join you, but I can only stay for as long as my group sticks around. It’s my buddy’s bachelor party, so we’re doing a pub crawl right now. I think we’re almost to the point of getting to our last stop, thank god.”
“Sadly, I’m used to it. Just fuel up on coffee and I’m usually good to go.” Martha smirked at him then glanced at Molly to try and see if she could figure out what her friend thought of Mickey. “My apologies, I forgot that the wall attempted to break your fall. How’s your arm healing up? I assume it’s good since I haven’t seen your name come up again in any records.” She took a sip of her drink, which was almost empty by now, “Congratulations to your friend. I haven’t done a pub crawl since I lived in Boston.”
Molly ah’d a bit and nodded her head like she understood what he was talking about. She would take his word for it though. “Well I’m glad you’ve not sustained any permanent damage. A draw it is.” She didn’t really think a brick wall came out and hit him or anything. That would be silly. But she understood running into one. “Oh I’m a pathologist.” She sat back and sipped her drink and watched them talk. No need to interfere.
“A draw sounds slightly more manly. And I believe my arm is healing quite nicely. I’ve stopped wearing the bandage and it doesn’t look too bad,” he held his arm out to her so she could take a quick look at it and give him a passing grade for healing, “I’m also trying to keep my ER visits down to a minimum of once a year. Well, at least the visits where I’m injured.” He didn’t want to imply that he would never visit her at the ER if they happened to be dating in the future. He just didn’t want to go to ER and have to get treated for anything, “Pathology? Diseases right? I feel kind of dumb next to the two of you because I just do computer engineering. You two are probably better educated than me.”
Martha took a quick glance at his arm and nodded. It appeared to be healing up well, but then again the light in the bar wasn’t exactly the best for examining wounds. It didn’t appear infected or anything though, so she didn’t think he had anything to worry about, “Looks like it’s healing well. And the last thing you want are multiple ER visits unless you have a lot of time to kill and really good insurance.” Of course, Martha wouldn’t have minded if Mickey popped in again, not that she’d want him to be injured or anything, but she certainly wouldn’t mind seeing him again, “Computer engineering sounds like you’d have to be pretty well educated though.”
She looked a bit sheepish. “Actually it’s more like autopsies. Medical examiner type.. morgue things.” Molly shrugged a little. “I don’t think it’s any more knowledgeable than anything else. I’m pretty sure you have to be at least somewhat smart to figure out all of that computer stuff. I barely can.”
“Okay, I will admit that computer engineering takes a different kind of smarts. And Molly, you’ve got my admiration for being able to work in a morgue. I watch those CSI shows and I know I could never do that. Color me impressed. And if you ever need computer help, just let me know. Might as well help out my friends when I can,” he lifted his drink up to take a sip of his drink before looking back over to Martha, “Maybe I should give you my number just in case?”
“I’ve told her the same thing. Dead bodies used to weird me out before I started hanging out with her in the morgue. Not around the dead bodies of course.” That sort of made Martha sound a little odd, “We usually hang out in her office.” She clarified before smirking at his suggestion, “Yeah, alright. I’ll give you mine as well.” Martha picked up her phone from the table and started a new contact, adding Mickey’s name in before handing the phone over to him to input his number.
Molly’s cheeks blushed a bit and she waved her hand. “It’s just something that I found myself good at. That’s all. I’ll let you know about the computers though.” She was always messing things up. Oh good they were giving each other their numbers. She beamed a bit like she’d done something good. Even if she hadn’t done anything. “I always put the bodies away before anyone comes down,” she quipped.
“Oh thank god, because I would probably faint if I saw a dead body,” he commented with a soft laugh as he handed his phone over to Martha and input his phone number into hers. It was one of his more suave number exchanges lately, so he couldn’t help but grin to himself as he did it. Once he was done he handed the phone back and took his back when she was finished, “Well, ladies, I should let you enjoy your drinks because it looks like my buddy is ready for another round of horrible shots.”
As Martha finished inputting her number into Mickey’s phone, she took hers back and smiled at him then glanced past him to where his friends were then back to him, “Hope you have a good rest of your night. It was really good to see you again.” Sure they had only talked for a few minutes, but Martha was pretty sure she was going to be smiling for the rest of the night.
Molly laughed a little. “You wouldn’t be the first to faint in the morgue, don’t worry. I fainted the first time too.” She gave a little wave at Mickey. “It was really nice meeting you. Have a good night!” She watched as Mickey went and then nudged Martha a bit. “Oh I think he likes you!”
“Either that or he was just being nice.” Although Martha had a feeling that Molly might just have been right. Otherwise, why would Mickey have come over to talk to them like that? A person didn’t normally come over to talk to their dentist or accountant if they saw them in a bar, so it was entirely possible that Molly was right, “How long do you think I should wait before I text him?” It had been awhile since Martha had actually dated anyone, but she could definitely see herself going out on a date with Mickey.
“Oh come on, I saw the way he was looking at you,” she told Martha with a shake of her head. No one went over to say hi to the person who stitched them up. If he’d just waved, that would have been one thing. “A day or so? I think you could text him tomorrow, ask him out.” Unless he got the jump on her and asked first.
“He is really cute, huh?” Martha couldn’t help but grin. The last thing she’d expected was to get a guy’s number that evening, but she certainly wasn’t upset about it. And after all, it had gone a lot better than some other guys who had hit on her in bars before. “I’m gonna get us each another drink.” She stood up, not waiting for Molly to respond and headed towards the bar.
