Rufus hasn't told Robert what they're doing tonight, preferring to keep it a surprise until they get there. He'd just sent Robert home in search of a nice suit and picked out his favourite suit for himself. After all, one's birthday only comes once a year, and he does so love spoiling Robert.
At the time he'd promised,Rufus is at Robert's door, in his suit, with flowers. And butterflies in his stomach. It's not their first date by any means, but it's certainly their most formal.
Robert should have known, really, that Rufus would take him somewhere requiring a suit. He rummages through every suit he owns until he finds an outfit that's monochromatic in black, one of his favourites for doing recitals and competitions in, and finishes getting ready just as he hears Rufus at the door. When he answers, he smiles somewhat coyly. "And flowers, too. You're so sweet to me."
"It is your special day, after all." He leans over the flowers to give Robert a kiss on that coy little smile of his. "You look stunning, darling. I'll be the envy of everyone there."
"Stop, you'll make me blush." Robert returns the kiss with a pleased hum, then takes the flowers. "Are you going to tell me where we're going yet?"
"First we're going to dinner, and then we're going somewhere special. And if you'll put those in some water, we'll be able to go."
"Don't be cheeky at me. It's my birthday." He gives Rufus a pat on the cheek and goes to his kitchen quickly, finding a tall glass the holds the flowers quite nicely. He does one more check to make sure he has everything before returning back to Rufus. "All right. I'm yours to spoil."
The restaurant is dim and they have a table off to the side, away from most of the traffic, which is lovely. And speaking of lovely, Robert looks almost angelic by candle light, and Rufus can't help but steal one of his hands and kiss his fingertips. "Should we start with a nice bottle of wine?"
"Why, Mr Sixsmith," Robert teases, voice just loud enough to be heard across the table (he certainly doesn't need people eavesdropping on his birthday dinner out), "are you trying to woo me?"
"I might just be," he smiles back. "And what of it? Do you object to being wooed?"
"Quite the contrary. I think you're doing a fantastic job." Robert wiggles his fingers at him, laughing.
mbpdaisygrl1 (1:30:17 AM): "Wonderful." Rufus breaks into a grin and orders a bottle of wine for them to share over the course of dinner. "Shall I tell you where we're going after this?"
"Please. I've been dying to know. You know how much I loathe and adore surprises." He nudges their feet together playfully.
"I know, that's why I love teasing with them you so much." He nudges back a little, toying with Robert's fingers. "There's a classical concert not too far away. Which may or may not be featuring a few works by Elger."
"Have I ever told you how much I love you?" He teased his fingers over Rufus' hand. "I can't think of a better evening. And it's absurd, really, to say this but the fact I talk about composers all the time and you remember my favourite is Elgar is. Well." Robert laughs a bit. "Thank you."
Rufus smiles, feeling warm and pleased at the compliment. He does try with Robert, he really does. Their interests might differ, but he makes an effort to understand, at least in part, what Robert is so very passionate about. "Well, at least I remembered it wasn't Cole Porter."
"Somehow, I don't think I'd care much tonight." He rests his hand comfortably in the other man's, though it's not long before he's tapping his fingers against Rufus' palm, always in some state of restlessness.
The tapping is sort of adorable and Rufus squeezes Robert's hand. "We'll order." He flags down a waiter to get a look at the menus before Robert starves and wastes away
"Should I be advised to not look at prices?" Robert asks, smirking a bit as he takes one of the menus.
"Absolutely don't look at the prices. This is your special night." Rufus grins and nudges at Robert's foot under the table.
"Then maybe you should order for me. So I'm not tempted to peek." He feels very giggly, and tries not to actually giggle. Instead, he hides his smile behind a sip of wine and nudges back.
"All right then." He can't seem to stop smiling as he steals the menu away. "Why don't you tell me what you're in the mood for."
"I don't know. Something delicious. But not too heavy, because I'm more keen on dessert than the real food." Robert nods. No sense in lying about it.
"Why don't we both get a salad, then. And then something terribly indulgent for dessert, to go with our wine." Of which he pours them each a glass.
"Salad?" Robert makes a face, then laughs. "You can't take me out to a fancy place and get me salad," he teases, poking Rufus in the hand.
He gasps and sticks his tongue out. "Chicken, then. Or fish. You said something light. What's lighter than a salad?"
"I'm paper thin! I can't eat salads, don't be a fool." Robert sticks his tongue out in return. "Fish. I want fish. Silly man."
"Fish it is, then." The waiter stops by and Rufus orders the salmon for Robert and a ceasar salad for himself. Pointedly.
"Ugh, no," he says, grabbing the waiter's sleeve before he can leave. "Don't bring him salad, he's just ordering it to make a point. Really. He wants something delicious that he's likely not to get as good anywhere else. It's my birthday, see, and I'd hate terribly for him to eat a salad." He puts on a bit of a pout and the waiter walks away, and Robert turns back to Rufus with a smile. "I hope he listens to me. That'd be fantastic."
"Of course he'll listen to you. Everyone does. You have that charm about you."
"You're not terribly upset, are you? I promise I'll help you burn off the extra calories."
"No, of course not. I wasn't really keen on a salad anyway." He slips his foot out of his shoe and nudges his toes at Robert's ankle.
"Are you just saying that? I can't tell with you sometimes." But then he snerks, wiggling his foot. "You, sir, need to behave yourself. I'm supposed to be the brash one."
"My darling, I live to please you. They'll probably bring me one of the specials of the day, and I'll be pleased with it." Rufus sneaks his toes under the hem of Robert's trouser leg. "You make me brash."
He moves the wine to the side of the table and leans over it to give Rufus a kiss. "I love you."
"I love you too," Rufus smiles and returns the kiss, catching Robert's arm to keep him there a moment longer."
Robert has half a mind to spend the rest of dinner in Rufus' lap, but he's sure that might be frowned upon and he doesn't necessarily want to get them kicked out of a restaurant on such a lovely night. He nudges their noses together and gives Rufus' lip a gentle bite. "I know."
It's very tempting to have dinner with a Robert in his lap, but it might be a poor idea, if they wish to have dinner at all. "Are we going to be obnoxious and affectionate until our dinner arrives? Because I don't mind that at all."
"I can't help it. You say things like living to please me and that makes me want to be obnoxious and affectionate. It's your own fault."
"I love being obnoxious and affectionate with you." He nudges their noses together and steals another soft kiss, feeling warm and content and perfect.
"Mm, good." Robert sits back down, teasing at Rufus' fingers with his own. "Now I'll need to think of something romantic and perfect for your birthday."
"You've plenty of time, it's not until August," Rufus reassures him.
"You know how I am at planning. It's going to take me that long to figure it out," he teases.
"Maybe they'll be a physics conference in town you can take me to."
"That's not romantic." Robert tickles at his boyfriend's wrist. "I'll come up with something. And you'll love it, because you live to please me."
"I do. I am absolutely your most devoted servant, and I'll do anything if it makes you happy." His boyfriend tickles back, then steals his hand to kiss at the inside of his wrist.
He laughs, wriggling his hand free as their food comes. Robert immediately checks to see if there's a salad. And when there's not, he looks pleased. "Thank you, you're the best waiter we could have had."
No, he's been brought chicken instead, which is just fine with him. He hides a laugh with a bite of chicken. "I can't believe you."
Yes you can. You love me, and you adore me, and you're much happier with chicken than a silly salad." He takes a pleased bite of fish.
"What are you thinking of for dessert, O Birthday Boy?"
"Something chocolatey and sweet. Like you even need to ask."
"I may have seen a death by chocolate cake that might suit your needs."
"Oh, my. I'm terribly excited. As long as you resuscitate me after my chocolatey death."
"I might have to steal a bite or two. Just to make sure it's worthy of your tastebuds."
"I had assumed we'd be sharing." Robert steals a bit of chicken. "Mm, delicious."
"Oh, good. I didn't want to impose on you and your cake, but since I've been invited, I'll gladly accept." And he steals a bite of salmon in retaliation. "We'll have to come here again, some time."
"Yes, I agree." Robert looks pleased. And he really is. This is the best birthday he's ever had, hands down. "And then I can kiss away any stray chocolate."
"Oh of course. I rely on you to make sure I haven't got chocolate all over." He feels ridiculous because he can't seem to wipe the smile from his face, but Robert is smiling too and that's all that matters.
He falls into a pleasant sort of chit chat as he eats, holding Rufus' hand the whole time. The dessert is beyond delicious, actually, and immensely chocolatey. And Robert makes sure to kiss the rogue chocolate from the corner of Rufus' mouth. "Gosh, I'm positively stuffed now."
It's lovely, just to be able to sit here and hold Robert's hand like this. And good lord, the dessert is absolutely sinful, as are the kisses Robet gives him between bites. "You're a dreadful tease, you know that," he murmurs and presses a kiss to Robert's jaw. "I adore you. Are you ready for your concert?"
"I'm not teasing, I'm helping." He smirks and stands, giving a stretch. "I hope you left a good tip. He deserves it, that one."
He does, in fact, leave a generous tip to their waiter for putting up with them. "All done." Rufus links his hand with Robert's as soon as he stands and leads them out to the car, stealing another kiss once they're in it. "You're even more tempting than that cake was."
Robert twists a bit and leans over so he can give Rufus a proper, involved kiss. "I won't be able to keep my hands off you once we get home tonight. The music's going to do me in, for sure."
"I'm going to be watching you the entire time, you know. You look so -- blissful when you listen to music. It's very sweet."
"I never knew that. Now I'll be all self-conscious."
"Oh no don't be!" Rufus frowns a little and squeezes Robert's hand. "I think it's positively lovely."
"I think you're lovely." Robert grins, sitting back in his seat and buckling up. "Onward!"
Rufus had been to the theatre previously to scope it out and see where the best acoustics were before he got their tickets, and he's fairly certian he got the best seats for them possible. He settles in and takes Robert's hand to kiss it, then kisses his cheek.
Robert tries not to be too bouncy, but he can't help it. He loves concerts, and Rufus seems to have gotten fantastic seats, and Robert's certain that's on purpose. He grins at Rufus and gives him a quick kiss. "You're amazing. Really."
"It's your birthday, I'm required to do amazing things for you." The lights dim and Rufus snuggles up as close as he's able to to Robert as the musicians start tuning up.
Robert wiggles a bit to get comfortable, looking a lot like a child on Christmas. When the music starts, he takes a breath in with the orchestra and nods his head just slightly as it starts. Eventually he does just what Rufus says he does, though, and gets lost in the music. He closes his eyes and smiles sometimes, or gets a frown of concentration and thought on his face.
And Rufus watches Robert out of the corner of his eye, smiling softly to himself. He loves the way Robert gets when he's around good music, and he's so very pleased with himself for having chosen well.
As with all good things, it has to come to an end, and Robert sits in blissful silence for a moment as everyone piles out after the applause. He turns to look at Rufus, then laughs a bit, giving him a kiss. "That was incredible. The conductor was excellent."
"I'm so glad you enjoyed it, darling." Rufus squeezes Robert's hand and kisses him in return, overjoyed that Robert loved his present so very much.
"Of course I enjoyed it. Don't be silly." He stands and pulls up Rufus with him. "Come on. We should finish the night on a high note."
Back at Robert's, Rufus finally takes the chance to kiss him like he's been wanting to all evening. Full and deep and passionate, wrapping his arms around Robert's waist to pull him close. "Happy birthday, darling."
Robert's been waiting for this. He smiles a little and wraps his arms around Rufus' neck, kissing back. "Thank you, lovely. Really. It's the most fantastic day ever."
"Perhaps we should just end it here, then. Trying to make it even more fantastic might ruin it," Rufus teases as he starts untucking Robert's shirt to slip his hands underneath.
"No, I think it's reached a nice plateau of fantastic." He snickers a little, nipping at Rufus' jaw. "You ought to know how much I appreciate you and all."
"Well, in that case. I will absolutely let you appreciate me in any way you see fit." He tips Robert's chin up for a very thorough kiss and Robert tastes like chocolate and red wine. It's perfect.
Robert loosens Rufus' tie, then pulls back with an amused look so he can lead Rufus, tie first, toward his bedroom. "But it's still my birthday, so you need to appreciate me at the same time."
"My darling, when do I ever not?" Rufus laughs as he's pulled towards the bedroom, letting himself be led. "I'm devoted to you utterly."
"Do you know what I've decided is one of the reasons I love you so much?" Robert steps up on his bed so he's eye level with Rufus, leaning in to kiss him. "How much you talk like we're in the thirties lately. It feels a bit nostalgic, really."
His arms automatically go around Robert's waist again, resting his forehead against Robert's and stealing soft little kisses. "I thought it was just because I'm British."
"Yes but you're not really British. We've talked about this. The first time we met, in fact, when you felt the need to apologize for your terribly rude friends." He puts his arms around Rufus' neck and gives him a pouty sort of look. "You're not supposed to argue with it, anyway. It's meant to be a compliment and you're ruining it and on my birthday no less."
"I'm glad I apologized for my terribly rude friends. Otherwise we wouldn't be having the most fantastic day ever." Another kiss to Robert's pouty sort of look. "Will you let me take you to bed and worship you like the god you are?"
Oh, well, that puts a delighted look on Robert's face. He presses their noses together, looking terribly pleased. "Yes, but only because you've asked so wonderfully nicely."
