Audrey was carrying a small pastry box in one hand, and a hot cup of tea in the other. It was in one of those insulated mugs, the kind that would stay hot for hours. She had to knock on the door with her foot, and hoped that he wouldn’t think she was kicking down the door.
Merlin was excited that Audrey was coming to visit, he’d missed her and her shop during his hospital stay and although he was home now he didn’t want to attempt the bus with his arm still in plaster. He’d probably be fine but he didn’t want to risk it.
As soon as the knock came he hurried to the door opening it with a grin, “Audrey” he grinned, “Come in. Do you want me to take something?” he asked realising she had her hands full.
“Oh, Jesus, Honey,” Audrey said, moving through the doorway without being invited, and handing over the cup of tea. Then she gave him a strong, one-armed hug he couldn’t escape, even if he wanted to. “You look like crap, Merl. Seriously. Why didn’t you get me over here before now?”
Merlin was quite happy to be hugged actually, Morgana wasn’t really the hugging sort and it felt quite nice. “Thanks Aud. Don’t hold back or anything” he teased before shrugging, “I don’t want to bother you, I know you’re busy and everything”
“Don’t be stupid.” Audrey said, then turned him around, closed the door behind them, and ushered them into his place. Even though she’d never been there, she seemed to have a sixth sense for where kitchens were, and headed in that direction. The plan was to clean if he needed it, and grab some plates for the pastries. “I’ve always got time for you, Bud.”
“I just feel like such a burden” he said, he had in the hospital too. He knew there were people far worse than him who had needed the bed he was occupying. He wasn’t even able to heal his arm with his own magic, he’d tried. He followed her to the kitchen dutifully. “But thank you, for coming to see me”
“Hey, don’t sweat it.” Audrey started to putter around his kitchen as if she owned the place, but stopped momentarily to give him a smile. “It’s my pleasure. Honest, hun. I just wish that I could do more to help.” It was true, too. Audrey was more than willing to be helpful to all of her friends, and she considered Merlin to be among the best of her friends.
Merlin was glad she was so at home in his kitchen, god knows it probably felt a little rejected as neither he nor Morgana spent any time in there. "Visiting me is more than enough, really. Its already making me feel better" he said blushing a little.
“Hey, that’s what I’m here for.” Audrey said. She set about washing some of the dishes left in the sink, putting them on the drying rack, wiping down the counters and whatnot. It was the least she could do for her friend. “Where do you keep your plates? You should be sitting and enjoying your tea, Mister.”
"You should come and sit with me" he told her, "I feel terrible that you're cleaning up for me" He wanted her to relax and tell him how she was not feel like she had to tidy up after him.
“I will, I will.” Audrey said, waving for him to sit down. She fished around in the cupboards and pulled out plates and forks for the pastries she’d brought along with her. “Don’t worry about it. This is the kind of stuff I like to do.”
Merlin sat as instructed, partly because he was told to and partly because if he stood for too long he still got tired. Really his body needed to hurry up and heal already. "Well thank you" he said, watching her, "its very much appreciated"
“You’re very welcome.” Audrey came over to the table a moment later with a treat for each of them. Cheesecake. She’d been obsessed with cheesecake lately. Hopefully he wasn’t lactose intolerant, or something. “I hope you like raspberry.” She said, giving him a grin.
Merlin’s face lit up when he saw the cheesecake, he was most definitely not lactose intolerant and "Raspberry is my favourite" he grinned at her.
“Yay! I guessed right, then!” Audrey said, giving a little clap. She loved it when she made good things that people enjoyed. Which was like, every day. Okay, so Audrey had a good life. It was even better with good friends in it. She lifted her fork and clinked it against his, gently. “Cheers.”
"You did" he nodded, "Just another one of the reasons why you are so amazing. I've got a book on the go" he told her clinking forks before taking a bite. He couldn’t stop a moan escaping, "Wow"
Audrey blushed. She shook her head a little and waved at him again, trying to be modest. Truth was she loved the attention. “Oh, go on.” Beat. “No, really, go on.” She added, playfully. “I love it.” Then her grin spread considerably at the moan that escaped him. It triggered a twist in her tummy. “Good?”
He chuckled, glad she liked it. He'd be perfectly happy complimenting her all day, she deserved it, as she was the nicest person he knew. "Really good" he told her, "You don't need to work right? You could just come live here and bake for me"
Audrey laughed. “I think I could handle that. Wait, you’ve got cable, right?” She said, teasing. “I need my Food Network programing.” The cheesecake was really good, though, she couldn’t deny that.
"Of course" he nodded, "Make me this cheesecake and you can watch the food network all day" he grinned at her.
“That’s a done deal.” Audrey said, nodding her head and grinning. “Oh, but won’t your roommate mind? I can make her some, too.” She added. “I can do all the cooking, really. So long as someone does the shopping.”
"Morgana only gets some if she asks nicely" Merlin replied, "Can't have her getting too spoiled. And no cheesecake, that's all mine. The kitchen won't know what's hit it" he smiled at her.
“You know how many of my customers are going to hate you for keeping me all to yourself?” Audrey asked, smirking a little. Not that she would have minded. It might be nice to be Merlin’s.
"All of them no doubt. But I have you so why would I care?" he replied with a wicked smirk of his own. Feeling happy about the whole idea.
That made a little chuckle escape Audrey. She was flattered and honored, and a bit proud all at the same time. “It’s so nice to be wanted.” She said, a teasing tone in her voice. She took another bite of her cheesecake. “So... work. How’s work going with your arm in that cast? Ooh, do I get to sign it??” She added, perking up at the idea.
“Always” Merlin assured her before taking a bite of his own cake, it really was incredible. He shrugged, “I’ve not been in, I rang to say I could still work but they said they didn’t want me back in until I was completely healed. I’m on full pay too. I think it might be guilt” It had been the Stark/Pott’s wedding that he’d been injured at so it wouldn’t surprise him if HR had been told not to let him return until he was better. “I just get so bored though”
He nodded with a smile, “Sure, you can be my first” he told her, “There should be a pen around here somewhere”
Audrey nodded a little. She’d probably feel rather guilty, too, if she felt like she could work and there were people paying her, but she was being told not to. Well, maybe a little guilty. She probably would have milked it, though. Spent all day every day doing whatever she wanted to do. (Which, ironically, would probably have been baking for her friends.) “You’re welcome to come by the bakery, if you can find a ride? I’d offer to come and get you, too.”
“Don’t move!” She added, then jumped up from her seat to dig around in the drawers in his kitchen. She found a black sharpie, and came back over to the kitchen table. “Found one,” she said with a grin, then settled into the chair next to his and uncapped her pen. “Now, how do you spell phallic?” She teased, before dipping down and scribbling on his cast.
Merlin watched her rummage around in the drawer about to suggest the living room when she found what she was looking for. He did a kind of laugh splutter at her teasing question before trying to see what she was actually writing.
Of course, she had to turn his arm a little so that her writing would be right-side up to him when he looked at it, which made her lean in fairly close to him as she signed it. Audrey would only kid about writing something nasty on his cast. especially with permanent marker. She drew a little heart around a plate of cookies, then wrote From my sweet heart to yours, get better soon. xoxo Audrey. She hoped it would be sweet without being over the top.
He placed his hand on her side as she leant in close to get the right angle, of course he knew that she wouldn’t write anything nasty. She was too nice for that, it was part of the reason Merlin liked her so much. When she had finished and he could see what she had written he hugged her with the arm still around her. “Thanks Audrey, that’s lovely”
The hand on her side made her heartbeat skip. It was a touch confusing, but maybe it’d just been a really long time since anyone had touched her. She’d have to remedy that. Make a couple of phone calls, meet up with friends for a drink, find someone to spend the night with. In her years running the bakery, she hadn’t had a whole lot of time (or inclination, really) for relationships.
She returned the hug, squeezing him tight. “You’re welcome. Now just make sure to hang onto that signature. It’ll be worth a lot some day.”
“I promise I shall treasure it” Merlin told her as he held her close, “When the cast comes off I’ll make sure it stays somewhere safe” he smiled.
Audrey chuckled. “Though... I imagine it might get stinky. Sweat and stuff. How long do you have to wear it?” Apparently, she was in no hurry to pull out of the hug. It might look strange or seedy to someone who happened to walk by, but Audrey felt perfectly comfortable in his arm(s).
“Saying I’m stinky?” he teased tickling her lightly, perfectly content to hold her. “Couple more weeks they said” he sighed, “It’s going to drag”
The tickle brought a laugh out of her. She squirmed, then took holds off his hand so he wouldn't do it again. "If you were stinky, I wouldn't hug you so much." She said, a laugh in her voice. "Awww," she added, lifting her free hand to ruffle his hair. "It won't be so bad. I'll bring you lots of cookies."
“Glad I’m not stinky then” he said with a grin, wiggling his fingers in her hold. He didn’t mind the hair ruffle, “I’ll end up getting fat, not that I’d care because your cookies are the best”
“Well, we can be fat and not stinky together.” Audrey said. She had no idea how flirtatious this was. How more-than-friends it really seemed. To her, Merlin was just her bff, and she was really good at ignoring those nagging feelings in the back of her mind telling her differently. “Oi.” She added, giving his hand a squeeze. “I won’t let you have that back if you can’t control yourself,” the teasing smirk spread across her features.
“Seems like a good deal actually” Merlin too was pretty oblivious to the flirtatious nature of their interaction, she was Audrey. His best mate and also the best person he knew full stop. He laughed, “I can make no promises, you make me lose all self restraint” he teased waggling his eyebrows.
Audrey laughed, too. “Oh, do I?” She asked, raising both eyebrows in a playful way. “I’ll have to log that one away for later. Make sure to use it when it’s most beneficial to do so.” She lifted her free hand and tapped the tip of his nose with her fingertip.
Merlin laughed, "Definitely" he agreed, "Could come in handy having a wizard at your command" he winked.
“At my command, are you?” Audrey asked, playfully. “I rather like the sound of that. What sorts of things can I make you do, then?”
"What sort of thing do you want? Dancing furniture? Fire? Slowing time?" Merlin listed a few of the things he knew he could do, "Whatever your heart desires"
“Yes, please.” Audrey grinned. “All of the above. All at once.” She was only partially teasing. “Honestly, doesn’t really matter what kind of magic is happening so long as we’re together, yeah?”
Merlin grinned and nodded, "Of course" he said, "magic is just a bonus to top everything off"
“Icing on the cake.” Coming from a baker, that meant something.
"Exactly" Merlin agreed smiling, "Pretty perfect cake too I think" he added.
Audrey grinned. “Wait, am I the cake? Please tell me I’m the cake.”
"Who else could it possibly be?" Merlin replied.
“I dunno. I just started thinking about cake, and got distracted.” Audrey beamed, sheepishly. “Now you know my weak point. It has to do with baked goods.”
“I have a similar point” he told her,”Especially when the baked goods are made by my favourite baker. So we’ll just have to keep each others secret”
Audrey actually flushed. “Aww, Merlin, you’re such a sweetheart.” She leaned over and tapped a kiss against his cheek. Being this close to him made her heart thunder. It was a little confusing, so she climbed up to her feet to tottle about the kitchen again. “Now, let me clean up this mess. You still have enough tea, I take it?”
When she kissed his cheek Merlin blushed too, shaking his head to clear it somewhat he pushed that aside and instead watched her in the kitchen. “I’m good with tea, thanks” he said picking up his cup, “You don’t have to do that you know”
"It's ok, I want to." Audrey said, ignoring that silly knot that was twisting in her chest. She washed the dishes in the sink and started putting things away. "I may not be good for too many things, but kitchen cleaning I can do."
“Audrey” his tone somewhat reprimanding, “You’re incredible. At so many things” He didn’t like hearing her put herself down at all.
She shrugged. "You're really sweet to say so, buddy." She said, giving him a smile. Whatever faults she knew she had didn't seem to matter to him. It made her feel loved. That's what best friends are for, right?
Of course that’s what best friends were for, “I’m not being sweet, I’m being honest” he told her with a sweet smile.
"You know, you could get away with anything just using that smile," she told him, smirking a little shyly.
“Oh really?” he said, “I’ll have to remember that” he told her with a wink.
Audrey laughed. "Why yes, I did just hand you a 'get out of jail free'card. Just make sure to use it for good and not evil." She finished tidying up in his kitchen and moved to sit down with him again.
“I promise to use it responsibly” he told her, “I don’t think I’m inclined to do evil, not so far anyway”
"Nah, you're one of the least evil people I know," Audrey said, almost lovingly. "Me, on the other hand..." she have him a wink.
“Hidden wicked side?” he teased, “It’s always the quiet ones. Sweet, pretty baker by day, whip wielding dominatrix by night?”
"It's not so hidden, I think," Audrey said, smirking softly. "It just only comes out at special occasions. I can't exactly be a whip wielding dominatrix at the bakery, can I?"
“Oh I don’t know, might attract a different sort of clientele but I’m positive you would be just as popular as you are now”
Audrey laughed. "Maybe. I'd have to come up with a whole new menu." Now she was thinking a costume party at the bakery--bdsm themed--might be fun.
“You could have great fun with cupcake decorations” he grinned at her.
The idea was just getting better and better. "I might need some help with the inspiration," she flirted. "As wicked as I am, I rarely get practice."
Merlin laughed, “Not sure I can be of much help there” he told her, “Being as good and innocent as I am” he winked at her playfully.
"Oh, you'll learn." She sure seemed like the type to teach, didn't she?
“Yes ma’am” he saluted because after all he was the type to follow instructions.
"Good boy," Audrey said with a smug smile.
