Severus was sitting in his office going through some paperwork. He’d been with the company for a while, and was fairly high up the totem pole, so he had a very nice office space. The desk was dark wood, the shelves lined with his books. It was spacious, with a large window, and comfortable seating. Not that he often had visitors.
Though, today he actually had a visitor. He looked up at the sound of the knock. “Come in.”
The visitor? None other than Robert Gold, politician, antique shop owner and property owner/renter. He kept busy. Really. In one hand, he casually carried his cane, using it as sparingly as possible, and in the other, a little styrofoam cup holder and two cups of coffee. “I thought I’d drop by for a visit,” he said, sly and amused. He hadn’t made an appointment, or even really asked beforehand.
Severus pulled himself up from his chair, breaking into what he could muster of a smile. Snape didn’t smile all that much. It hurt his features. But still. He motioned for Gold to take a seat. “Well, it’s an honor, Sir. To what do I owe the pleasure?” He added, sinking back down into his own chair only after Gold was sitting as well.
Gold smiled too much, but more often than not they were sly, sarcastic turns of the mouth as opposed to genuine pleasure. “I just thought you might like a cuppa,” he said, easily sliding down into a seat, and then handing over coffee. Robert was observant enough to know he’d made it exactly like Snape took it. “It was my turn, after all.” Also, Gold had no idea what on earth to do with a day off when he had one. But he wasn’t going to admit that.
“Thank you, then.” Severus said, and accepted the cup. He didn’t really have friends, so this whole thing was strange. Though, now he was starting to feel like he could turn to Gold should he need things other than antique Chemistry equipment. “I appreciate the gesture. It’s a long day today.” He added, leaning back in his chair. “This will help.” Meaning the coffee.
“Every day seems to be a long day after a certain age, I think,” Gold pointed out, but not unamusedly. “I actually managed today off - the entire day - and I’ve no idea what to do with it at all.” Was that sad? That was kind of sad.
Severus gave a very soft chuckle. “I absolutely agree.” He said with a nod. He’d been feeling his age more and more as the time went by. “Interesting. And you chose to take some time to visit me? Why, Mister Gold, I’m touched.” Amused.
That was a little funny, now that Snape pointed it out. Gold only rose his eyebrows and gave an amiable sort of smile. “I’m afraid I fail at being particularly social with most, so you’ll just have to put up with it.”
“It’s all right. I’m not very good at being social, either. We can learn together.” Severus offered, lifting the coffee up for a sip. It was exactly how he took his coffee, which surprised him just a little.
If nothing else, Gold was observant to the point of obsessive. He only gave a nod. “And yet somehow you managed to find yourself a wife.”
“Somehow.” Severus agreed. “If I ever figure out how that happened, I’ll let you know.” He added, breaking into something of a smirk. Perhaps women enjoyed undying love and affection. Severus had it in spades. Romana was the only woman in his heart now, and he showed her every day how much he loved her.
“I’d be willing to take incomplete notes,” Gold said with a tiny snicker of a laugh. Not that he didn’t have someone he was interested in -- he just wasn’t sure on how to bridge the gap from flirtatiously amiable to -- well. Whatever came next. It’d been a while.
“I should put together some sort of seminar on the subject,” Severus mused. It was a rather insane and laughable thought. He was the last person in the world to be giving relationship advice.
“Perhaps a late night radio show would suit better.” Gold was not without a sense of humor, after all. “Hello? Long time listener, first time caller. Oh, Severus, how will I ever find love? Please help.”
Severus was amused. “Do they even do late night radio shows anymore? Isn’t it all iPhones and downloads and podcasts?” He asked, smirking a little in response. “Not sure how this all translates to the modern world.”
“You know, I actually have no idea. It’s all the same difference though. Podcasts are better, anyway. Easier.” Hey, just because he worked in an antique shop didn’t mean he was one himself.
Severus didn’t even have that excuse. He was just a bit of an older model in a world full of flashy and new. Sometimes Daisy knew more about his smart phone than he did, and she wasn’t even three years old. “Then, Podcasts. I’ll do one of those about … relationship advice.” The words sounded so insanely foreign coming out of his mouth.
It did. Even Gold could tell. Which was what made it all the better. After a moment though, he shook his head. “Maybe read up on it first.” He sipped his coffee, and then sat up a little. “I wouldn’t want to continue interrupting your work day, however.”
“I’d hate to look a fool.” Severus said with a little smirk. The irony was that no matter what he did--no matter how prepared he was-- if he attempted to give relationship advice, he would look incredibly foolish. “Oh, well.” Severus pulled himself up to his feet and reached forward to shake Gold’s hand. “Thank you for coming by. And the coffee.”
“Certainly,” Gold said, standing with the help of his cane and shaking Severus’ hand. “I’d say any time, but it’s rare I actually manage having days off. Still, I’m sure I’ll see you around, friend.”
