The photoshoot was over with -- it’d been rather long, a bit tiring, and Mako still wasn’t sure how so many fashion photographers thought that him being half naked was a good idea when they were trying to sell clothes.
Whatever, he supposed, it was their money. All he had to do was stand around and look good.
He and Amy were paired up often lately -- maybe their bosses like the drastic differences between an asian with dark hair and a freckled Scottish redhead. Either way, Mako was pleased with it; he liked Amy.
They were wiping away make up from their faces in front of weird vanity mirrors. Mako glanced over at his redheaded pal. “So? Plans for the rest of the day now?”
“Nah.” Amy said, taking off the incredible amount of eye make-up they had on her eyes. It was as if they used a wall roller to put it on. She’d gone through three eye make-up remover pads and was working on the fourth. “Not really. Unless you count changing into sweats and lounging on my sofa eating popcorn as a plan. Why?”
It was a lot of make-up. Luckily, Mako was comfortable enough with his manliness to not feel weird about removing eyeliner from his own eyes. “No reason. I just don’t have much to do either. My maybe-girlfriend has gone nuts again.” He’d have rolled his eyes, but he was busy removing gunk from them.
Amy laughed. “Maybe-girlfriend?” She asked. They hadn’t done a whole lot of talking about their personal lives. Sure, likes and dislikes. They’d talked about music and movies, career aspirations, that sort of thing. But she’d had no idea he was with someone. Or maybe-with someone. “What do you mean, nuts again?”
“Maybe girlfriend. Because she -- er. Goes nuts and finds a reason to argue. And then breaks up with me. And then we get back together. But never have enough time to talk about if it’s actually dating or not.” The saddest part was that Mako seemed more bemused than he was annoyed by it. “Anyway, we argued over Disneyland, and now who knows what’s up with that or not.”
“Wait, how did you argue over Disneyland?” Amy asked. She didn’t really understand the relationship. Then again, her own was a bit complicated. She’d fallen in love with Rory because of the dreams. Every time she had a dream, she was reminded how her dream self felt about him, and that made her believe she loved him more and more. It was strange and a bit confusing. “Disneyland is wonderful, isn’t it? That’s what I hear. Great for the whole family. I should probably get out there again and check it out.”
“Oh, sure - no. Disney is cool. It’s really fun. I grew up in California, so you know, I’ve been. But she’s from Colorado - never been there, right?” He leaned back in his chair, ignoring the streaks he’d missed around his eyes for the time being. “And since she’d never been, I thought it would be fun to make a weekend of it. To celebrate being done with finals and stuff. But then she got mad because she didn’t want me to pay for a hotel room for the night.” Actually, when he actually said this outloud, Korra sounded completely crazy.
Amy blinked at him. That sounded... yeah, it sounded crazy. “She didn’t want you to pay for a hotel room? What, she wanted to go dutch?” That was a fun expression she’d picked up listening to the make-up girls gossiping while they put way too much shadow on her lids. “Or, did she think you were assuming too much when you reserved the room?” She added, giving him a playful grin. “Cheeky thing, aren’t you.”
He stuck his tongue out at her, proving just how cheeky he could be. “I didn’t reserve anything, I suggested it. She said she couldn’t pay. And I said no big deal, I could. I guess she didn’t like that idea?”
“Ahhhhh, that was the problem. Not the assuming king-sized-bed, but the fact that you make more money than she does.” Amy said, leaning back in her own chair. She lifted a foot to press against the make-up counter and push back onto the two back legs of her chair. “I can see how it might make a person feel awkward.”
“I guess?” Mako seemed perplexed over it. “I just don’t see how it’s a big deal, though.” And he really didn’t. If you had something someone you cared about didn’t, shouldn’t you share?
“I agree with you. When you’re going out somewhere special... why not just pay for it?” She gave a little shrug. Then again, Amy had never really been poor. She didn’t have a frame of reference. “All the money stuff gets in the way.”
“Yeah, totally.” He rolled his eyes again, reclined back as far as his weird chair would allow. “Oh well. She sounds crazy, but... she’s totally worth it. You know, right? I mean, you’re married. So you must.”
“Yeah.” Amy’s face fell just a little. She set her chair back down and turned to the mirror again, lifting another little cotton pad to continue wiping the make-up from her eyes. Mako bringing up Rory made some conflicting emotions flicker through Amy’s chest. “I think my husband’s the one who must get it better than I do. I’m way more crazy than he is.”
Mako looked a little curious over that expression, but wasn’t sure he should ask. Sure, he’d just opened up, but - well. Women were weird. “There’s nothing wrong with crazy,” he pointed out. “Most women wear it well.”
“Ha.” Amy said, grinning. “Good answer, my boy. Good answer. You definitely get points for that one.” She finished wiping more of the make-up off of her face, and then turned back to him. “C’mon, you can buy me a frappuccino.”
Mako laughed at that, wiped off one more smear of make up from his face and then nodded and stood up, stretching almost lazily. “Just practicing for my next arguing session with Korra,” he said. “And sure, let’s go. Coffee for all. Or just us.”
