Hermione was interested to catch up with Zuko. It was a shame they didn’t have more time to spend together, but Hermione’s school schedule was crazy. She was almost finished with this semester, and had put in her papers to officially change her major. So she was on a different track now--though he knew about that already.
As she sat in the coffee shop with her drink (and one of the sugary ones for him) she realized she had absolutely nothing new to report. Except that she’d been to see that Iron Man movie, and enjoyed it. There was nothing else new.
She looked up at the chime signaling the door was being opened, and broke into a smile at the sight of her friend.
Zuko echoed her smile as soon as he saw it -- spotting two drinks on the table, he went straight to her instead of standing in line for no good reason at all. He slipped into the seat across from hers and greeted her with a little nod. “Hermione. How are you?” As usual, he had things to report, but none of them were particularly great. That tended to be the way of things.
“Good.” Hermione said, giving him a smile. “Normal. Can’t complain. Glad that the school year is over and now I can start reading things I want to read, rather than things I have to.” She might watch some television, too. Maybe. “How are you?”
Oh yeah, school. Zuko wasn’t sure how he’d forgotten about that, considering Draco went. “Okay,” he said with a half smile -- honestly wondering a bit if Hermione’s reading list would vary much from her school book list. She didn’t really seem the fantasy novel type. “I’ve been laying low, I guess. My family has a habit of stressing Draco out, so I’ve been trying to make up for it.”
“Why does your family stress Draco out?” Hermione asked. She could only imagine. His own family life must have been really stressful, anyway. What with Pansy being his sister, but not really his sister... strange stuff, there.
Pansy being a sister but not was surely a bit stressful. But not in the same way that Zuko’s family was. Pansy was just occasionally moody. Azula and the rest of the gang were occasionally … well. “They tend to get into a lot of deadly type fights,” Zuko said with a tone of clear disapproval. For being such a moody boy, he wasn’t particularly interested in things like fighting, himself. “And then they tend to--er. Drag me into it, I guess.”
Hermione frowned. “Yes, that does sound stressful. And I’m sure you’ve had your whole life to get used to it, poor Draco’s only been in the family... what, a matter of weeks? Months at best?” She shook her head a little. “It’s certainly going to take some getting used to on his part.”
Zuko gave a lopsided smile at that, shrugging a little before taking a sip of his coffee. Thank goodness everyone know of his propensity for sugary drinks. It made life very nice every once in a while. “They seem to have gotten worse recently. My sister nearly died the other day. She’s better now, before you ask -- but I’m afraid I was a bit shaken up over it. I might have scared Draco a bit while I was -- er. In shock, I guess.” Finding a severed hand in an alleyway might do that to a lot of people, though.
“Well, of course you were shaken up over it!” Hermione said, looking a little horrified. She had, indeed, been about to ask when he answered her question preemptively. “Anyone would be! I doubt that you scared Draco too much. He’s got a sister, I’m sure he understands.” She assumed that he meant the worry about his sister, and not finding severed body parts.
“He always seems to,” Zuko agreed with the tiniest of nods. “Draco seems to possess the kind of patience in reserves that not many other people seem to have.” He sure as hell didn’t. Zuko was almost positive that he wasn’t patient enough to even think about being patient.
“He’s a really good man in this world.” Hermione said, giving a little nod. She was really glad to know both Draco and Zuko here in her waking life. Even if the Draco in her dreams was a twat. “You really are lucky to have found him.” Though, there were great things about Zuko, too. Obviously. Or else she wouldn’t have been such good friends with him.
He knew that, and didn’t feel the need to get weird or offended over it. Zuko wasn’t really the type. He was moody and hotheaded, but only when times really called for it. Hermione had never been offending. “I am,” he agreed. He paused, thoughtful, even as he took a sip from his coffee. “Once you’re done with school for the year, maybe you and Jim should come over for dinner.” Yes. He’d just offered that. Wow. “We can’t show you the stars or anything, but I think Pansy owns...er. Jenga.”
The idea of Jim Kirk, Draco Malfoy, Zuko and Hermione sitting down to play Jenga was absolutely hilarious. Hermione couldn’t stop a burst of laughter from escaping. She nodded quickly, though, and agreed. “Jim and I would love to come over to dinner. We can play charades, or something, too.” she added, playfully.
The idea of charades was only a little more laughable. It would probably all end the same way: with Zuko frustrated and frowning, Draco appeasing, and Jim and Hermione a little too amused. It could be fun.
“You’ll have to let us know when you’re free, then.”
“I will. I’ll get Jim’s schedule from him, and we’ll make it a night.” She nodded once. “I know the best place to go get dessert, so we’ll bring that with us.” And if there wasn’t school, they could do it on a school night. Perfect plan. She sipped from her coffee cup almost triumphantly.
Zuko gave a nod that spoke of the same triumph. Hey, sometimes it was the little things. Dinner and stupid games with friends, and not nearly dying family members. He drank his coffee again. “Sounds like a plan, then.”
